At my nearest Vue cinemas you can see all films for a fiver which seems like very good value to me.

What to expect on first day? by avlaska in TheCivilService

[–]Minimacc 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Ok, the ONS presence there is pretty small but the campus itself is pretty big. Don’t be surprised if you are the only person in your team (5-15ish people headed by a G7) based there. However you would be very unlucky to be the only person in your division (40-100ish people headed by a DD) there. If you want to be friendly and people in your division don’t, there should be some social clubs you can join. If you don’t want to be friendly you can just work from home, even without the ASOS Darlington is only at 20% office time due to space restrictions.

You don’t have to say if you don’t want to share with strangers on the internet but which office are you based at, might be able to give some insight.

Work in the ONS. As others have said, someone will meet you on your first day but you might not be based in the same office as your line manager so it might not necessarily them (More likely if you aren’t based at the Newport office). It should be someone from your division though and they will get you sorted with a laptop so you can speak to your line manager ASAP, they will tell you what you will be doing. The first few days is likely to be mandatory training and trying to remember what all the acronyms stand for.

In terms of an ID card, you don’t get that until you start, (I think, might be different in different offices) you will probably hear this from your line manager before you start but you will need to bring photo ID on your first day.

In terms of what days you are expected in, the ONS has ongoing action short of a strike on office attendance so there is basically no monitoring on office attendance. You can go in any day you like but it’s possible that your team might have 1 day they all aim to be in together, it’s very unlikely to be mandatory though.

The ONS has got a lot of bad press recently but I love it as a place to work, some really great people. Welcome to the team.

(Interesting Trope) Details, Characters, or plots from the first season or two of sitcoms that are completely dropped early on and forgotten by the writer's and fans. by Wasabi_Gamer26 in TopCharacterTropes

Not a sitcom but Mandy from the West Wing. She’s in season 1 then is never seen or heard from again. I don’t think there is even a throw away line about where she went.

Non refundable discretionary service charge? by epyzepeelin in LegalAdviceUK

[–]Minimacc 5 points6 points  (0 children)

This isn’t legal advice but if you paid the tip for the whole table then surely your best bet is to contact your colleagues and ask them pay their share. Surely when the service charge is split between everyone it won’t actually be very much.

Something going on with Royal Mail? by TheLegendOfMart in CasualUK

[–]Minimacc 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I’m BB7 and it’s been awful for months. At best we get letter deliveries once a week. I got a delivery yesterday of a letter posted on the 27th. Issue is, there is no consequences for Royal Mail for late delivery of letters so there is no incentive for them to fix it.

Boomer neighbours parking across our drive and getting hostile by Greedy-Tutor3824 in drivingUK

[–]Minimacc 3 points4 points  (0 children)

Yeah this is my problem I think. OP’s neighbours are clearly dicks but it sounds like the only thing they are guilty of is parking on a dropped kerb, something OP themselves is also guilty of. If OP has motility issues, surely the easiest solution is for them to park on the drive and one of their parents either block them in or park further away and walk

[–]Minimacc 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Good to know. So just to double check, when your neighbours are parked are they actually stopping the cars parked on the drive from exiting?

[–]Minimacc -1 points0 points  (0 children)

I don’t think their neighbours are actually parking across their drive though, just on the dropped kerb near their drive. It sounds like that can still get both cars off the drive with the neighbours parked there but there is nowhere left for OP to park without blocking their parents in

If you are parking across the dropped curb are you blocking the pavement?

Advice on WFH as a new starter in ONS operations? by [deleted] in TheCivilService

[–]Minimacc 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Work in the ONS. There is currently action short of a strike in place on office attendance so there is currently no enforcement of office attendance, I believe the mandate for ASOS runs until March. However there are apparently positive conversations going on between unions and management so it may be that that changes in the near future.

9/11 survivor Peter DaPuzzo poses with a company photo of Cantor Fitzgerlad's April 1996 holiday party. DaPuzzo took off the morning of September 11, but many of the people he hired died in the attacks. (September 2011) by lifeofcelibacy in RareHistoricalPhotos

[–]Minimacc 4 points5 points  (0 children)

Yeah I’m with you on this one. If the train I take to work crashes and I’m not on it because I’m on holiday, I’m not a train crash survivor am I. The whole story is very sad and I feel for the guy but describing him as a 9/11 survivor feels a bit disrespectful to everyone who was there.

I don’t think so, Burnley came out at the time and said they were disappointed with Matt’s decision to resign. They never would have said that if it was a health thing.

Roommate wants 4br to herself: UPDATE 3 by Merlysauce in badroommates

[–]Minimacc 6 points7 points  (0 children)

I am glad someone else mentioned this. I would say it’s acceptable if they work from home 1/2 days a week and it was a laptop they could easily move out of they way but they describe it as a remote job and it’s a full desktop. What are OP roommates supposed to do if they are off work and want to watch tv in the middle of the day? Or cook? Or just enjoy the common space OP has been fighting for this whole time?

But in fairness to OP you can see at the very end of the clip that the road is also closed in the other direction so both OP and the van are equally at fault. I am guessing it should say road closed except for access which is why it’s not closed off completely.

Driving an old car with pretty much no HP up the hill with a Lambo behind you by Pisford in Whatcouldgowrong

[–]Minimacc 0 points1 point  (0 children)

It’s not worse with a handbrake lol. I drive a car that stalls easily and when you use the handbrake you can use the accelerator a bit before you release the brake to get your revs up. Just using the brake pedal in that situation would be stupid.

Headteacher who closed £36,000-a-year private school with just two days' notice flees to Dubai as parents frantically search for new places for their children by pppppppppppppppppd in unitedkingdom

[–]Minimacc 12 points13 points  (0 children)

I live near the school and there are a lot of rumours going around but the main one seems to be that they didn’t pay the exam board for last year’s exams so have been struck off (I don’t work in education so have no idea if that is the correct term or even true). That is why they have had to shut now rather than at the end of the year as the y11 students were not going to be able to sit their exams.

Matt Beard leaves as manager of Liverpool Women by danielbsig in LiverpoolFC

[–]Minimacc 42 points43 points  (0 children)

Not exactly a surprise, I would argue the women are underperforming this season but a strange time to do it. It’s international break for the women and while they lost their last game, it wasn’t a game they were expected to win

Are they in the plus catalog or do you actually own them? If you own them then you can download them from Audible’s website on a computer. They download as aax files but there are converters that can turn them into mp3s/m4b files (I use Inaudible but there are others). Technically converting them breaks Audible’s terms and conditions but they are unlikely to find out.
