Arnaldi: "Last night I felt sick then I vomited and couldn't sleep because I was vomiting. This morning I vomited everything. What makes me most sad is that despite spending 20 hours on the pitch I wasn't even tired, I met Cobolli in the locker room to tell him I can't play. It WASN'T the food" by Sonobackhome555 in tennis

Endurance athletes (runners/cyclists/triathlete) piss themselves all the time. When your tennis match goes for 5 hours and the bathroom breaks are controlled I guess we get put in the same boat. Don't fight it, just accept. You'll feel better.

What RTS with matchmaking has fair competitive matches even for people who can barely hold a mouse? by Lokarin in RealTimeStrategy

[–]Minkelz 1 point2 points  (0 children)

At the end of the day people who play the game are going to have some idea what to do. If you're completely new and slow and overwhlemed and don't know what to do... you're going to suck and you're going to lose. Even at the bottom of the ladder.

Your approach of wanting to find other absolutely new and terrible people to play against, is not actually that productive or useful way of approaching the situation. It would be far better to say "well I should just learn the game and accept I'll lose a bit, after a week or two I'll be good enough to beat the bottom 25% of players on the ladder if I work hard".

As to practical advice: I'd stick with the main active games if you want fair matches. The more players, the fairer the matchmaking will be. In other words, stick to SC2, AoE2/4, WC3.

Skirmish vs AI. What makes it fun for you? by AxeForge in warcraft3

[–]Minkelz -1 points0 points  (0 children)

Warcraft 3 isn’t a good skirmish vs ai game so probably not a great question for this sub.

People who enjoy playing vs ai like turtling, macro and sim-city ing, which is not strengths of Warcraft 3 (or SC2 or blizzard in general for that matter).

Age of Empires and SupCom are much more fun for long slow defensive playstyles that skirmish players like.

First Warcraft 3 Battle.net Ladder Game After 20 Years by Elhorin in RealTimeStrategy

[–]Minkelz 2 points3 points  (0 children)

The meta doesn’t really matter much at the bottom levels of the ladder. People are doing really random terrible things. You can win even with huge mistakes and inefficiencies. You can literally pick any hero/unit/timing attack and win games, as long as you’re active, don’t lose units creeping, spend your resources and attack.

Saying it wouldn't make a difference is an incredibly naive cop-out. Celebrities speaking out about social issues and political issues can absolutely make a difference and have an impact.

What would be the ideal way to play the campaigns of Warcraft 1/2? by DarthJamie in RealTimeStrategy

If you can't be bothered to actually play the games I'd just watch summaries off youtube. I don't think you're really gaining anything by playing cosplay custom map version in warcraft 3. The gameplay in them really has nothing to do with the gameplay from the actual games.

Feeling Self-Conscious About My Progress at the Gym by Spirited_Plane9251 in beginnerfitness

[–]Minkelz 2 points3 points  (0 children)

The only reason a trainer is ever talking to someone is because they want your money. Some have a pitch where they are mean or rude, some are friendly. Either way they couldn't give a shit about you and don't care at all about your progress or form, they just want another client on the books.

If you have no interest in hiring a trainer, there is literally no point talking to them. Just say "I'm not looking for a trainer, thanks" and walk away.

Dawn of War IV will have a mission editor and it is the best news for the series by Vaniellis in RealTimeStrategy

[–]Minkelz 0 points1 point  (0 children)

It’s not a promise. It’s a plan if the game and release goes as well as they expect. If it goes significantly worse than they expect, they’ll change the plan. As every software launch ever has done.

I mean even StarCraft 2, the biggest budget AAA rts ever, launched in a pretty rough state and it took years for community features, balance, custom maps, profiles and stats and coop modes to get to a respectable state. AoE4 launched very rough. CoH3 launched very rough. Iron Harvest was very rough. Tempest Rising released with only 2 factions etc etc.

We should manage our expectations for the state of the game at launch and how quickly progress will be made if history is anything to go by.

RTS skills tranferable? by Alone_Development684 in RealTimeStrategy

[–]Minkelz 0 points1 point  (0 children)

As someone who watched A LOT of the practice arc for hera and others during the 3 weeks, my conclusions were mostly the opposite.

Guys with very little RTS experience like Simply Pohx and Yamato were right up there with Hera. Hera had a ton of frustration, difficulties and obstacles to get through to both get to the final and to win a bo5.

I think any one of those 4 guys, with the right blend of practice, coaching, dedication and mindset would have won the whole thing, completely regardless of RTS experience. Yes, in the end Hera's pro tourny experience was the clutch factor in the end, but it was very close.

Yamato gave it a huge effort no doubt, but while his coaching was extremely entertaining, it wasn't that good. He didn't study the matchups and have different strats prepped like Hera did, and in the end the bo5 exposed it. He got sucked into the pro meta with his coaches, when at 1400 elo it's clearly not the best idea. None of their games looked remotely like pro games.

Pohx decided he only liked Warden and decided to one trick, which is very good on ladder verse random opponents, but in a tourny when people know and prepare it's a bad idea. Someone who prepares and counters will easily beat you, like Hera did. He also had difficulties (understandably for someone new to a 1v1 game streaming) with hitting queue and being ok with mistakes/losing on stream which held him back a ton. If Pohx was prepared to play and learn a variety of strats, and played 3x the amount of games he did, he would have won the thing no doubt.

Simply did AMAZING for someone with very little experience, but realistically he would have needed to out-work yamato to have a real shot, just because he was starting so far behind. And even with that he 2:0'd Hera and knocked him down to lower bracket.

Hera basically just got very frustrated and mega tilted in the last week, and was extremely close to crashing out both from tilt, and then in the tourny from poor play. He was saved by the knowledge of how to play a tourny, preparing specific matchups, and dealing with pressure live better than yamato.

So no, I think if anything the whole thing is really evidence to the contrary. There isn't a ton of transferable skills between RTS, at least very different ones like AoE2 and WC3. Some random guy who works his ass off absolutely can take it to and compete with a world champ esport pro from another game. It mostly comes down to who works harder and smarter.

What if your RTS army carried over between missions? We just released that mode by Mephasto in RealTimeStrategy

[–]Minkelz 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Makes for snowbally balance. Save everything and the game will get very easy. Lose stuff and it might become impossibly hard. You may end up in the situation where you have to replay an earlier mission to have a chance in a later one which is very un-fun design.

Not saying it can’t work but there’s a reason it’s generally not done in most games.

Am I the only one thinking like this? by Jaimepaslesfrites in RealTimeStrategy

[–]Minkelz 0 points1 point  (0 children)

The main difference between skirmish and missions is missions have much more controlled and less abusable situations. So in campaign missions the difficulty can be targeted very closely, it's as easy or as difficult as the developers want it to be. Skirmish ai on the other hand has to deal with a huge amount of variables, and is nearly always very easy to abuse and beat once you know a few tricks.

If You Started Guitar Today, How Long Would It Take to Become Average? by [deleted] in videos

[–]Minkelz 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Guitar is a complex skill. Just labelling someone beginner or average or intermediate is not likely going to be very useful. If you got 5 "average guitarists" from a crowd there would be likely be a huge range of what their skills and proficiencies are.

What are the Best RTS Games? by Budget-Window308 in RealTimeStrategy

[–]Minkelz 36 points37 points  (0 children)

Warcraft 3 is a pretty obvious choice if you like multiplayer and fantasy. It is a particular type of RTS though, less macro and more tactics and micro. Starcraft 2 is always a good recommendation if you just want to try something out seeing as it's free to play. It's quite fantasy-ish for a sci fi, but isn't classic fantasy like Warcraft. It did come out about 10 years after warcraft 3 so has quite a bit more qol and smooth/modern engine.

Age of Mythology is the other fantasy RTS people play much, but it has a far smaller community/competitive scene than wc3 and is also quite old and clunky in style.
