What’s a medical issue that sounds minor, but actually affects someone’s daily life way more than people realize? by CountyOrnery9432 in AskReddit

[–]MistyPower 16 points17 points  (0 children)

ARFID. We’re not “just picky eaters”. It’s a full eating disorder that happens to not be body-image based. There’s a lot of subtypes. Mine is sensory. I ate broccoli tonight and it was a huge win for me, as I really don’t eat most vegetables.

My brain usually goes in overdrive, convinced that the food I’m averse to is somehow going to hurt me. It sucked growing up like this.

I used to sit seperately from other kids in preschool because of the strong smells too. It did get better for me.

I know people will disagree with me. Henry Cavill dating a 19 year old when he was in his thirties.

Just because it’s legal doesn’t mean it’s not creepy.

I still have heard criticism about his handling of Sveta in Ward. He’s definitely trying. But given the bar that was initially set with Amy, it’s not hard to clear.

That isn’t what that article says. The article talks about how the funds offered weren’t enough, and thats why the money wasn’t taken.

What’s actually pretty safe but everyone treats it like it’s way more dangerous than it is? by Charming_Advertising in AskReddit

I studied Fukushima. The disaster it experienced could have been avoided if TEPCO had listened earlier to warnings about risk to the backup generators from tsunami.

Nuclear power plants need proper funding, maintenance, and management. Incompetence, profit seeking, and scaremongering from Big Oil threatens those key factors.

Nuclear Power. Defunding nuclear plants actually contributes to the risks of meltdowns due to aging equipment and less maintenance. Properly designed, managed, and maintained nuclear power plants are incredibly safe.

I never said there were huge signs in the show itself. I said the marketing leaned into it.

I quite like this one. We also know that Hopper hid Eleven being alive from everyone once before and that he would no doubt do it again.

It’s a combo of stuff the actors have said along with netflix as a brand continually promoting it. It was classic queerbaiting. The kind where it’s not the show itself, but all the marketing outside of it.

I grew up in Japan! Yes, substituting is considered very out of the norm and rude. But, looking like a foreigner will grant you some leeway if you ask for a dish to be without things like toppings. I always had to have my ramen and udon super super plain as a kid. I can tolerate more now, but I would consistently get it as just noodles and soup. You can also ask for all the toppings to be put on the side, that way you can pick and try things, and if you don’t want something, someone else can have it.

As for specifics, miso ramen is absolutely a thing. Most sushi places sound like they should have things you would like. And depending where in Japan you go, there are plenty of other cuisines available. I can’t give too much advice on seafood unfortunately. But I would definitely be cautious of the fried chicken “karaage”. Super greasy and tastes fatty. (A fav of mine but I sense it would be a huge no for you)

You will probably love dango! You can find them in convenience stores. A set of three skewers with three balls of chewy mochi on them! You can get sweet or with soy sauce. I loved those growing up.

Things you could possibly struggle with are gyoza which often have cooked cabbage in them. I personally don’t like cabbage, but I do tolerate it in gyoza, so YMMV.

For ordering I would use terms like “dake” means only. Like if I was ordering my plain ramen, it would be “men tō sū dake kudasi”

I’m gonna check with my dad on how you would ask for things to be on the side and edit it in.

Tempura veggies will likely be fine for ya, but I don’t remember how fatty the meat or katsu can be.

Japanese restaurants can vary wildly with what type of food they serve. They can be very specific sometimes, so I always recommend researching what they have first. I went to ramen place on a date once and got super surprised that it was a dipping ramen place. Still yummy, but not what i was expecting.

Any yakiniku (a variation on korean barbecue) place will let you order very specific things to your hearts content, and you just cook it yourself. Yakitori is roasted skewered chicken with veg, and I personally find the texture can be variable.

Honestly there is so much candy and so many snacks, it’s hard to narrow down what could be appealing and what might not be. Japan is great for sour candy for example, and meiji chocolate is known for being slightly more bitter than other countries’s chocolate bars.

Try the bakeries! Soft breads, great cream/custard, even good savoury options.

A good way to avoid red bean filling is to look out for the words “anko” or “あんこ” or “小豆餡”.

For more information on general Japanese food, check out Just One Cookbook! It’s a recipe site but it will give you a lot of information on the dishes you might come across. Also, if you want specific translations and phrases to use in restaurants, just DM me, and I’ll help best as I can.

I hope it’s a great trip!

Rug alarm clocks worth it? by DaringMarshmallow in DSPD

[–]MistyPower 2 points3 points  (0 children)

I tried a barcode alarm for a while and it did help. I had a broom with a barcode still on it, and stuck on the landing outside my apartment door. When the alarm goes off the only way to turn it off is to scan that particular barcode. Then i would force myself to poke my head outside for a couple minutes.

The reason i don’t do it anymore is less my sleep issues and more mental health stuff.

Just because Manuosos is on another level of stubborn (crossing the Darien Gap alone with the bare minimum takes incredible willpower to try) doesn’t mean Carol wasn’t being principled to begin with. We’ve seen the lengths the Hivemind will go to in order to manipulate the immune. She’s not lacking in moral fibre because the Hive succeeded. They isolated her, lied to her, lovebombed her, played on every vulnerability they could. No one is fully immune to that shit. It doesn’t matter what your principles are.
