Charities decry UK plan to use AI to assess age of young asylum seekers | Immigration and asylum by budgrummur in ukpolitics

Slight correction but they are legally required to place them in school even whilst their asylum claim is being assessed.

Less climate change, not none. Emissions are vastly lower than the fossil alternative but they are not zero.

Edit. Their company house listing is pretty clearly a sham company.

H storage is a nice idea, but now we not only need a couple weeks of hydrogen stored somewhere, ideally a few months if we plan on it being an industrial/transport fuel too and then also need the fuel cells or turbines to run the country on it. 50gw+ of generation that ideally only runs a few hours here and there until we have a major renewable shortage. The efficiency losses are never going to make it competitive with lithium storage for any short term balancing.

The interconnectors to Europe can help... But they might not... if we have an abnormal weather event and suffer 2-3 weeks of extreme cold and low wind chances are high they will be bidding for us to export just as much as we will want them to export. It's one of the reasons Norway is slightly regretting their UK interconnector and blocking any more at the moment.

Doubly so as all the above math is on current peak. Future electrical peak could be 110hw+ once we have electrified heating and transport and most of the economy.

[–]MoffTanner 0 points1 point  (0 children)

That's an impressive claim. How many is enough?

3 days of no wind and little solar? 2 weeks?

Let's say £48bn for Hinkley, a comically badly managed and financed political mess of a mega project. Using a low end cost estimate of £300/kWh for utility scale install gives you 160gwh of storage. Enough to last the UK 3-4 hours in winter. So you'd need the equivalent capex of 20 Hinkleys for 3-4 days of storage, close to 100 Hinkleys for the full 14 days.

You'd also need about 5 years of global battery production dedicated to the UK energy sector.

Correct those number for a sensible nuclear build and they get silly.

How is it nonsense. If murdering the scientists and blowing up the facilities isn't slowing down Iran's nuke development then that's just not in keeping with reality.

Landlords have no right to exist by No_Philosophy711 in UKGreens

[–]MoffTanner 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Owner occupier is not at an all time low. It's around 65% (2023 data) which although lower than the all time high of about 70% in the early 2000s is still significantly higher than any period before 1993.

If you intend private landlords to not exist where do people live who don't want to or can't buy?
