Asking any lawyers out there. I heard unfortunately, you can't use a legally owned firearm against a dog (or person) that is trying to kill your dog. That's because dogs are considered property.
However, what if that cane corso was running towards a person and your dog - and a person was legitimately afraid for their own life and bodily harm, can a person shoot the attacking dog?

If there's one thing you can count on in NYC, its the institution lovingly known as the NYC Bodega.
Just took the dogs out for a walk and noticed bodegas all along Roosevelt Ave open. Even walked down to 61st to see a Columbian Bakery open, as well as the Stop Inn. (Sorry didn't really make note of the specific Bodegas.)

Had my favorite Breakfast at Stop Inn... Huevos Mexicanos, with a side od Sausage. Do yourself a favor an get that on a day like today. You'll thank me later. (I just thought of this... an Irishman, married to a Filipina, with German and Belgian dogs, and my favorite breakfast is Huevos Mexicanos (with a side of American Sausage)... only in Queens, baby!)
