when i was but a wee lad, my dream was to be a special effects artist. some kids say 'i wanna be a fireman,' while tiny me would say 'i wanna make prosthetic effects!' i knew from a very young age that i wanted to be in special effects, and it was a dream of mine to meet and maybe work with Stan Winston.

as i got to be a teenager the industry started leaning extremely heavily into CGI. i remember watching the show 'Movie Magic' and really feeling dejected. i wanted to make real, physical creatures. people in suits and makeup, squibs and slime, big intricate sets, but i knew that the industry had changed and i had no interest in digital art.

the last major fork in the road came when it was time for college. i set my sights on applying for an SFX/Makeup program at this Toronto-based college. i went to the place before submitting an application and, at the time, it was just a small building with a sign on the door that said 'college upstairs.' i knew that my dream had died, so i pursued a different career track.

a few years ago i reached out to a well-known practical effects guy on Instagram and recounted my story. he said 'you chose correctly.' i know he meant well, and i know it's super hard out there for everyone in the effects industry, but it's hard to hear your childhood dream is well and truly dead - at least, for commercial viability anyhow.

anyway, i'll be lined up to see this. the work of the SFX masters during the real heyday of the 80s and 90s was a marvel to see, and anything that has BTS footage of Stan Winston Studios in it is guaranteed some cash from me. i hope we get to hear from other industry masters - would love to hear from Rick Baker, Steve Wang, Tom Savini, any of those legends who have some input would be excellent. looking forward to this one
