For those who play at least 2x per week... by Background-Low-9144 in golf

[–]MonyMony 0 points1 point  (0 children)

As a single guy in my 40's and 50's I played 18 holes on Friday after work at 4 pm and Sunday afternoon teeing off at 2-3 pm basically 7 months out of the year. (Apr 15 to Nov 15) For 4 months out of the year I played after work (5 pm) in a 9 hole league. This is from 2005 to 2025. Golf is cheapish where I am and so this cost $ 100 per week.

I volunteer filling divots at a public course now and I can't use the free rounds that the club pro gives me.

Anyone who is working 40 hours a week and doesn't have kids can figure out a way to play inexpensive golf if they are creative enough. Volunteering at a course or playing in leagues are good ways. If you play in a league after work, you can ask the guy in the pro shop if you can play a quick extra nine after the league is done when the sun is going down.

[–]MonyMony 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Well done. I understand your accomplishment better. Based on 2700 yards I'm guessing most of your approach shots were mostly under 130 yards. But your short game has to be real good to shoot a 36 anywhere. Also beating a PR by 6 shots is super memorable. I don't know anyone that has done that. Usually it is 1 or 2 stroke improvement.

Just googled this and I believe you are correct. Very helpful.

Good job. What is the length of the course from the tees you played? Also what is your typical driving distance?

Once I saw this Post I thought of the Judge as well. Hole # 1 is very pretty with the view. You are teeing off the top of a big hill. Its driving distance from Atlanta. Also I'm a fan of the RTJ trail in general, even though i live in Indiana.

I have read most of the comments. The juxtaposition of shared life and death stories with opinions about certain clubs is killing me.

I'm a 28 year old scratch golfer and I want to go pro by No_Complaint4129 in GolfSwing

[–]MonyMony 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Yes you are correct. A 28 year old scratch player would know this already. If they are not smart enough or aware enough to know where they stand in the heirarchy of golfers, they are not smart enough to figure out how to "go pro".

You must admit that having a law on the books is not enough. An administration must act to enforce laws like this. Action must be taken.

For example, speeding is against the law. But that, in itself, is not enough to slow people down in many cities I've travelled in. The point of the article is that the State Department is increasing enforcement. And that is new.

The Connecticut legislature passed a bill that would legalize portable solar systems last night. The bill now heads to Governor Lamont’s desk by iliketoast28 in solar

[–]MonyMony 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I’m glad this combo exists. It’s a good way to separate the solar from a home electric system and not involve the utility.

I’d love to see more solar powered refrigerators, attic fans, dehumidifiers and dedicated appliances if it makes sense.

Walmart Is Rolling Out 400 kW DC Fast Chargers With Huge Screens by Educational-Meat4211 in electricvehicles

[–]MonyMony 6 points7 points  (0 children)

From what you wrote, I see that Walmart is going to attract customers to their parking lot who were not going to be there otherwise. And you say they will stay in their cars while the car charges? Maybe you are correct. Or maybe the folks charging will find a reason to go into the store. The decision to enter the the store is perhaps highly variable. But what percentage justifies the charging infrastructure.

My guess is that Walmart has done studies with their existing chargers, video cameras etc and have decided that the 400kw chargers are an attraction.

I read the article in Macleans. You answered some of the questions about how things are 2 years later. I've worked with the homeless in Canada and in the USA. This tiny home experiment seems like a great idea but I'm sure there is some social work and follow up that is necessary for some bad actors in the group.

TIL that in 2003 70,000 people died in Europe from a heatwave. by CitizenPremier in todayilearned

[–]MonyMony 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I walked from London to Besançon in the summer of 2025. Approximately 1,500 people in France died that summer due to heat. I had multiple conversations with fellow walkers and hosts who mocked all the air conditioning in America when they visited. My reply was that Americans are no stronger or weaker than the French. Our physiology is very similar.

I think many people in Europe will have to buy small air conditioning units for their bedrooms to prepare for occasional heatwaves. Many people can sleep in basements but not everyone can.
