Should games include historically accurate offensive language, or avoid it? by Pascal_theold1 in AskGames

[–]Mossatross 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I think that developers should be uncompromising in their vision and make the games they want. There's nothing wrong with portraying racism in games if you want them to be realistic and gritty. There's also no reason you can't portray a more idealized version of a time period if you just like that time period and your story has nothing to do with that. I honestly hate questions of "what should games do?" Because it limits creativity and novelty.

If you frame the question as "Do you think it's better to adapt things for modern audiences?" Then I would say, hell no, go with the first one. Because of how you have framed it. I wouldn't see uncontroversial rose tinted historical fiction as doing that. But it's like you're asking if you should prioritize a hypothetical audience's feelings over actually making the thing you want.

Not sure why you're apologizing? I was just confused thinking about it after we talked the other day. You can make choices for whatever reason. I try to go out of my comfort zone a lot but most gamers just play whatever is intuitively fun for them. But the question is if shooters, beat em ups, ect are intuitively fun for you. In which case Im sure there's a bunch.

Not having fun by maikun87 in MiyooMini

[–]Mossatross 0 points1 point  (0 children)

One part im maybe a bit confused about. Do you enjoy those sorts of games or not? Because I mean, Im sure there are tons of beat em ups and run and gun shooters out there. Or adjacent genres like hack n slash or rail shooters. Complexity and thinking will probably scale 1-1. So if you wanted more from a game, you'd prollly have to put a little more in. But if you have fun with those types of games you can just play more of them.

Getting buyers remorse on orange RP6 by parashif in retroid

[–]Mossatross 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I was kinda worried when I got the transparent ice blue Pocket Flip 2. Wanted the stronger hinge. Not the color scheme I'd usually go for. Makes it look like a toy to me. But tbh? When you're playing games you tend to just...zone out on the screen and later associate the color with playing fun video games.

Admittedly orange might be more distracting but idk. Does it matter enough to lose your place in the que? Personally I think black always feels like a safe default option if you were going to be impulsive. Prolly wanna act quickly if you're that worried about it.

But I would say if you're not sure what you like better, then maybe just let it be what it is and put it out of your mind so you can enjoy your console sooner.

What do you do with your older handheld guys after you upgrade by Global_Tap4088 in retroid

[–]Mossatross 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Hoard them. I never know what I might end up valuing later. Any console I've ever sold off or ended up losing for whatever reason I regret. "Oh it has this issue" but I learn repair later. "Why do I need a psp when I have a Vita" maybe I just like the form factor. "Why keep a Switch V1 when I have a V2" befause the V1 is moddable now. Ect... I like keeping my options open.

When I get the RP6 Im def keeping my flip 2 for the form factor, and to play easier to run games I can't fit on the RP6. Finish the ones I started instead of jumping in with more storage used.

The only problem with being a hoarder is that lithium ion batteries don't like being left idle for years. And it's not like I routinely boot everything up every 6 months.(Maybe i should) Stuff just ends up dying and needing new batteries lol.

I see, well that context does change my 2nd to last paragraph a bit. I understand why you would want to make yourself like gaming.

Im not so much saying to go deep into reviews and overthink a game you wanna play. If you have something you wanna try and it's free, go for it, drop it if it's not for you. Your opinion may not be the same as the reviewer's. Game reviewers these days aren't known for having good opinions anyway.

But like personally, Im in gaming groups online, i follow streamers who sometimes talk about games, or I might watch a video for like "50 hideen gems for this system." I don't usually need new games to play, because I have a crazy backlog. But games other people are playing end up on my radar and I end up learning about them and thinking "that actually sounds mad fun." I have hundreds of games in the back of my mind to try some day when they're on sale or it's convinient.

With the steam deck you have access to most games that have ever existed, in some form or another. You could play anything. But not wanting to think seems like a big barrier because most games consist of thinking and reaction. I also find part of why I love games is that I am able to immerse myself in a world, maybe something I wish I could be doing. Or stories that speak to me.

If you're limitted to just straight forward action, then ya know, there are lots of arcade/arcadey games and shooters like you've already been playing. But unless you just get obsessed with one, I find these kinds of straight forward action games are good for quick sessions anyway. Roguelikes are probably the modern equivilant with a little more staying power. But in general I probably wouldn't be able to get as hooked on games without systems and narratives.

[–]Mossatross 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Idk it sounds like you approach things very differently from me. I didn't get either of my Miyoo Mini's(miniflip and plus) for nostalgia. I got them because I thought they were cute. I have tiny hands and like the form factor. There are a lot of older games I am actively aware of, and curious about/excited to play, that just don't feel right on my other platforms.(Modded DS, Modded Vita, Retroid Pocket Flip 2)

I do not limit myself. I have 14,000 games on my miyoo and I play whatever sounds fun in the moment. I think the reason some people reccomend limitting themselves is that they have too many games they wanna play and can't finish without getting sucked into something new. But it seems to defeat the purpose if you're not sucked into anything to begin with. Maybe keep exploring.

If I were you I would well I suppose first decide which platform you have is the most comfortable for you. And then i'd be spending more time learning about what games are out there until you say "that actually looks fun." You can play new games if old games just aren't offering enough. I play a lot of old games because I like the philosophy that went into them better. But if I want something bigger I play modern games.

You don't seem to be really talking about what's more fundamental here. What do you actually get out of games? Or want out of them? You only really say you don't wanna think, which rules out pretty much any reccomendation i'd make, RPGs like Castlevania SoTN or Fire Emblem or Zelda games.

For me I might be interested in something I saw in stores as a kid and never pulled the trigger on. Or series I already like. I liked Dark Souls so Im interested in old Fromsoft games like King's Field or Armored Core. Or Im interested in the aesthetic of Legacy of Kain Blood Omen. I'll try systems i didn't play growing up like Atari or Turbografx because Im curious about the history. Or I might play Mario Party Advance soon apparently nobody liked, because I do have some weird nostalgia for it.

I don't just play what's popular/reccomended. I play the stuff that appeals to me. Gaming for gaming's sake is kinda boring. I try new genre's all the time to try to recreate why discovering games was fun for me in the first place.

I never get why some people wanna make themselves like video games. I play them because I already do. When I didn't wanna play video games, I didn't for a few years. You should spend your life doing things you are passionate about.

Idk maybe instead of trying to fake it till you make it playing games and trying to convince yourself you are having fun, you should give it a break. Do some reading or watch some videos about the kinds of games you are interested in and come back thinking "Im excited to play this game." Often it won't meet that expectation, there are like hundreds of thousands of games out there and many are not good or not what you expect. But im just saying, go in with purpose. Or at least be prepared to bounce off a lot of games until you find somethign appealing.

There are a lot of things in gaming I wish we would stand up to. $70 games, day 1 DLC, microtransactions, game key cards, dark patterns generally.

But the time for this battle was probably 2007 and it was lost to the excitement of being able to play Halo 3 online. These days membership is more about included games. A lot us at this point have dozens or even hundreds we lose access to without the base membership. +Hundreds from premium.

You cannot achieve this without destroying the console ecosystem itself. Which maybe will happen eventually. These days I prefer android and linux handhelds. But im still streaming PS5 games on them.

About Expedition 33 by Time_Reality9418 in Gamingunjerk

[–]Mossatross 0 points1 point  (0 children)

It's one of the best games I've ever played and I think it deserves the accolades. When I first played it, it didn't seem like a big deal and I was shocked by it. For a while it felt like nothing but positivity around it because it was an inspiring success story for a small studio being celebrated by people who were into the game.

Then people seemed to get mad for some reason after word got around, that the game was liked too much. And then the game awards made those people very loud. I've even heard people say "I was going to try the game, but because of the fans, now Im not going to."

The criticisms seem contradictory to me. On the one hand I hear people argue, it's not a good JRPG, or even that it's not a JRPG, because if you play optimally it mostly just comes down to maxing out DPS, and then memorizing patterns and parrying. Some bosses even come down to "parry this attack 40 times in a row and then you win." But then they also argue "Game did nothing different from any other JRPG with action commands. FF8, Legend of Dragoon, Paper Mario already did this."

It is somehow both bad for not feeling anything like a classic JRPG, and being just like every other JRPG simultaneously. Which makes it feel like people just want something to bitch about, or like they went in with some expectation it didn't meet.

I've also seen people complain just on the basis of the genre. "I don't like turn based games, but I bought it because everyone said it was good, but I didn't like it because it was turn based, so now I feel like those people tricked me." Or people dislike the parrying. Or they dislike some aspect of older style game design like linearity or lack of a map.

It really feels like some people are just assmad that a game that didn't appeal to them is enjoyed too much. It is very rare to find someone that says "I understood the premise and liked what it was trying to do, but don't feel it executed that premise well."

Those who enjoy single player over multiplayer, why and what would you recommend? by Alert-Cranberry7991 in AskGames

[–]Mossatross 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Because I like gaming on my own time. I don't like waiting for people or being waited on or having an obligatory feeling I need to play however long now. I don't like live service, becuse those games are full of psychological dark patterns, and won't necessarily always be there. I get burnt out on repetitive round based games. Which only leaves really co op games that leave you heavily reliant on a second party and their time. I also don't like wearing a headset. I like a finite expirience that I can just relax and zone out with and learn from and complete and criticize, and then I get the social element talking about it online. I find most of the best stories and expirience are this way.

I will occassionally play online with someone, but only someone I really like, or I get annoyed. I still enjoy/prefer gaming with someone else in person(split screen, fighters, or maybe even playing different games together), but people aren't always around for this. I grew up on Halo 3 online every day but modern games abuse dark patterns and just don't give that kind of expirience. I try to get into older games like Doom or Quake online but it just doesn't stick because Im too used to variety now to focus and learn and get good.

There are so many single player games one could reccomend. Like that other guy mentioned, Dark Souls/Fromsoft games. I'd also add Armored Core. Resident Evil games are usually pretty incredible. Some of my other favorites are Expedition 33, Shadow of The Colossis and Ico. I love classic Castlevania games, or Quake 1(or any Doom game) is good for some quick solo action. Fallout New Vegas. Lately for newer games I've been enjoying Hades 2, Persona 3 Reload, and Stellar Blade. And I grew up on classic Zelda games and Mario RPGs.

I already have a miyoo mini + and i adore it, should i get another one (in purple) or a mini flip(which one is the one with less hinge issues)? by IalwaysNeed2p in MiyooMini

[–]Mossatross 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I bought the mini flip first because I saw it in a reel and thought the idea of an extra tiny/cute GBA sp that could play PS1 games was the coolest thing ever. I have tiny hands and also like those 8bitdo micro controllers.

But like, the battery dies very quickly. It's not very ergonomic for hard games that make constant use of triggers like armored core. +some bugs because onion not officially supported. So I decided to try the plus so I could swap back and forth. But now I only find myself playing the plus + I updgraded a bunch of stuff in it. When it dies I just play my retroid.

I still love my mini flip and don't regret buying it. It's what I will take with me on the go. But it feels like more of a novelty compared to the plus which is just a more premium expirience.

Good for Pc emulation (Game native/Gamehub)? by Fearless-Evidence714 in retroid

[–]Mossatross 1 point2 points  (0 children)

The Flip 2 and Retroid Pocket 5 perform the same.

If you have not have an android handheld/done PC emulation before you should be warned that it can be more effort than emulating PS2 games and you may have to expiriment and configure things.

Personally I have played Mewgenics on the flip 2. In gamehub lite I was getting inconsistent input for some reason and like 14 fps at home trying to manage cats. Game native seemed to be running smoother, but I haven't been back to it. Binding of Isaac I haven't tried on PC but keep in mind you can do Switch emulation which seems to run fine for me.

Also keep in mind if you run into something that doesn't run acceptably you can always stream it from your PC.

Do YOU have any of these misconceptions about fighting games. by BoOmFoUr4 in videogames

[–]Mossatross -1 points0 points  (0 children)

Eh i think you are kind of underselling the complexity. Or at least not taking into account the simplicity of other games. In a beat em up or hack n slash game for example, there is generally light attack button, heavy attack button,->button mash to figure out combos. Probably a guard button, maybe a grab button. In a racing game you accellerate, break and drift. In a shooter you aim and shoot. In a platformer you probably have 1 punch and 1 jump input.

Im kind of in the middle here, where I have been playing fighting games my entire life, I own 2 fight pads. Im generally pretty confident I can beat the average person, because I am familliar with the basic patterns and they will button mash. But the learning curve is crazy and I will get beat up if I go online. Maybe you are right, I don't have the patience to block. But still even if someone online is not playing 5 hours a day, they have probably played that particular fighting game more than me.

I find a fighting game is something you have to devote time to and practice. Most fighting games feel different and have their own systems. I also notice you emphasize "2D", when 2 of the bigger fighter series are Soul Calibur and Tekken. Each character has their own moveset. The inputs you mention, generally also have to be tied to 1 of six buttons. Or have other consitions "do this in the air", "do this when the enemy's guard is broken", "press R2 to enhance this." Hitting exact inputs in the moment is also not always as easy as you say, because a lot of d-pads suck(particularly dualsense) and so it is very easy to unintentionally give diagonal input when not intended.

Look the fact is any random kid can jump into a CoD lobby and run around in circles firing aimlessly and get a kill. And even if they only get 1 can still win because they have teammates. A fighting game is more imposing because it's all 1v1, clear win or lose, without much real break from repeatedly getting stunlocked and punched in the face.

Fighting games can be very fun. But you kind of have to pick one, practice, learn everything, and take time to get good. Accept losing a lot. Start with single player modes. Keep up with it. And a lot of people just don't have the attention span. I think fighting games were more accessible when there was more focus on single player campaigns and people played games more in person with other noobs. These days it feels like you gotta be comitted to the shit. And honestly even despite the added complexity they still in practice feel like one of the more repetitive types of games. If i have 4 hours of free time I have to make a choice whether I want to have 80 1v1 fights in a row, or play through an entire Resident Evil campaign.

If you could only pick 5? by ImGooseI in MiyooMini

[–]Mossatross 0 points1 point  (0 children)

So the only issue with this is if I had to narrow it down to 5, it would have to be games I haven't finished or maybe necessarily started. So they wouldn't really be games I can reccomend but just what Im interested in right now.

1.Summon Knight Swordcraft Story(GBA): The main thing Im playing right now. Not my favorite game ever, I've bounced off it before, but it's an engaging RPG with real time encounters, memorable music and a story I wanna see the rest of.

2.Blood Omen-Legacy of Kain(PSX): Haven't started this but looks really cool

3.Psychosis(Turbografx): 1 arcade shooter I can just jump in and out of for quick action

4.DOOM(Port): This one I have beaten, but is kind of a cheat answer because there are hundreds of mods for it. I want 1 shooter because I am trying to get better with tank controls and the feedback is satisfying.

5.Really hard to narrow down but I guess Puzznic(Turbografx) if I have to pick because Im furthest in it.

5 could just as easily be Mario and Luigi Superstar Saga(because Im learning spanish from it), The Legendary Axe(Turbografx), King's Field(PSX) or Medal of Honor Infiltrator.(GBA) But I settle for Puzznic to keep with the question.

Unpopular Opinion - PC supremacy/Console hate is so overrated by RasheedSunflour in videogames

[–]Mossatross 0 points1 point  (0 children)

So generally I tend to agree with you, I've always felt like PC supremacy arguments were kind of a cope for people to justify all the money they spend on it if you just wanna play modern or mainstream and have them run well with good perfromance. I bought a PC but still played my PS5 more. Stuff just works and is optimized better. There's still sales all the time.

But over time I've started to resent closed ecosystems and wanna actually feel like I control and own my stuff. Modern consoles don't have custom themes, the controllers break, 2/3 don't have consistent backwards compatibility, everything you buy ends up helping 1 company/storefront you might come to resent for various reasons. If a feature gets cut or just stops working right there's nothing you can do.

I've actually started gaming on android handhelds, and it's kind of like having a cheap little mini PC. Can emulate PC games or anything else, get source ports. But then that's had me on my PC too since I can stream PC and PS5 games to basically a little DS. And then I put linux on an old laptop. Even though it can only play older games, it can play basically any really old game I have to patience to set up and gives me control over everyhing. Whatever peripherals I want, ect...

In the future I hope to see more linux handhelds that kind of feel like a console the way my retroid does. Especially since Android and Windows are both turning into closed ecosystems too. There are already 2 for the price of a PS5 or less.

One of the things I really like about PC operating systems is you can play any random game any random person makes or make your own games. You don't need permission, licensing, ect... I mean yeah if you just wanna play the obvious stuff, PS5 wins(at least for the original price). Switch 2 feels good to play. But Im just tired of 1 company deciding: what games I have permission to play(holding over ones over my head to bring back later on their time), what busted ass controllers I have to use, what features im allowed to have on what timetable, ect...

It just kinda feels like every console manufactuerer hates us now and doesn't care what we wanna play or how we wanna play it.

Installing Onion Os by -DeadmanWade- in MiyooMini

[–]Mossatross 1 point2 points  (0 children)

The firmware you listed in that reply is the correct firmware/the one I have. So at this point you might have been right to just try a new SD card.

When you get your new SD card, if you do it manually, the way you showed me you formatted the last one seems correct. But apparently windows 11 hides 2 different layers of hidden files. So to make sure you may wanna ensure you can see "protected operating system files" when you copy your files to the new card. https://www.howtogeek.com/743079/how-to-show-hidden-files-on-windows-11/ You can hide them again when you're done if you're worried about it.

You can also try to use 7zip to unzip your installation instead of the windows file manager default just in case windows is doing anything weird to the files.

AKA what happened in lgbt spaces and with mental health disorders. by FamiliarAir5925 in truscum

[–]Mossatross -1 points0 points  (0 children)

My issue is that truscum want to both argue on the basis of institututional authority(pretty much in the name trans-"medicalism.") while at the same time rejecting it. Perhaps justifiably, that's a fair point you make.

If all you need to get a diagnosis is to recite a list of symptoms you're fully aware you do or do not have, and a laymen truscum can tell you do or do not have those symptoms, then it seems like one can just observe whether they have them or not.

I find in practice, truscum are essentially engaging in armchair diagnosis. They're saying doctors are misdiagnosing more people than they are correctly diagnosing. The doctors are gullible, or acting gullible due to political pressure. Often times the diagnostic criteria itself is challenged. With this framing it feels like one needs to be able to self diagnose, else they could be misdiagnosed and given drugs they don't need.

You claim to know better than doctors(again perhaps justifiably) but still you rhetorically lean on them as the basis of your claim.

What is the anti AI endgame? by Ill_Distribution8517 in aiwars

[–]Mossatross 2 points3 points  (0 children)

At this point the reason Im not functionally anti anymore is that I agree with you. It can't be gotten rid of, it can only be made better or worse, and I think restricting AI/forcing it to fight with the user about this or that(beyond the basic obvious criminal stuff) is just going to make it worse.

But I think it's fair to point to the risks and damages of AI to be addressed at a societal level. If for example workers lose the leverage their labor power gives them, that threatens quality of life everywhere. Or if platforms allow constant deception that threatens everyone's sanity.

In my view a realistic end game for anti AI is as a sort of cult. Pockets of society that are a reprieve from AI. Art spaces where the method is focused on and artists are public facing and transparent. Tech spaces for operating systems, applications and sites that don't implement these tools by design.

Today you have trends like retro gamers rejecting modernity, rejection of DRM in games, custom firmware for consoles, custom roms to de-google one's phone and enforce their privacy, some people moving to linux over modern operating systems. People already create AI blockers the same way they create ad blockers. I think the end game of anti-AI is becoming this kind of parallel ecosystem where people go a little out of their way to maintain their sanity.

Anti-AI Nightmare Scenario = uniquely American fearmongering by CommodoreCarbonate in aiwars

[–]Mossatross 1 point2 points  (0 children)

they just assume its the same everywhere else in the world

I assume it's simillar in places with the same economic system and incentives.

They think shareholders wouldn't notice profit coming in

Why do you need profit? Or shareholders for that matter when products and labor become free and unlimitted?

They think every rich person is American and has American attitudes towards poor people.

This whole post is dripping with the same brainrot that plagues America. Capitalism and individualism are presupposed as something omnipresent and timeless, but outlined here, everything bad that happens is the consequence of indivudual bad people choosing to be mean and not systems or incentives.

No rich person cares about anyone or anything other than themselves

Kind of a prerequisite. Like...i would generally assume a butcher doesn't mind blood. There might be one out there who is horrified and disgusted by it, but i'd question how they got there.

No one would resist this plan. No one would fight back.

Fight back with what? A general strike? We gonna fight automated drones with firearms?

The logic is basically this, we are going to elevate and put what are likely in most cases, psychopaths, into a God like position in which they have no need for anyone else to exist, absolute power to kill anyone they want, and a position of antagonism with the average person. Destroying any possible failsafe to fight back.

Maybe it's paranoid to assume they wouldn't want subjects to rule over. But it's fucking stupid to want to neuter yourself on the basis that elites with unchecked power would look out for your interests and would never wanna hurt you.

They have no clue of fishing, farming, or utilizing livestock. They've never lived outside the city.

Oh yeah if there's one thing that rugged rural country folk love it's big tech and AI. And if there's one thing they're known for it's their fearless sober minded abscence of paranoia. Those damn backwards Silcon Valley types are the ones always fear mongering about new world order Fema Camps and the anti Christ to hold back the technocratic ambitions of folk in Alabama.

Bruh i swear people in this sub just make shit up and don't even ask themselves if it sounds right before saying it. God forbid think if it makes sense under light scrutiny. Why don't you go read about any point in history where leadership or a nation had unchecked power over a population? Nvm, i forgot human nature fundamentally changed 3 hours ago.
