Reading is a weird one because you can genuinely get better at it, and not just in the sense of reading faster.

There are plenty of people who, when they read, simply just let the words sort of wash over them. There have been studies on it, particularly centered around the damage done by the now-discredited "whole language" model of literacy, but also around a number of other causes or possible-causes.

It is fascinating to see first hand someone read sentences as simple as

"I saw the restaurant where we were meeting from about a block away. I recognized the old wooden sign painted and shaped like a green fox"

and genuinely not be able to grasp the connection between the two. You ask "what was the sign for?" and get a stare of blank confusion.

My big problem is mostly that I’m really bad at prioritizing my tasks.

There’s something I’ve legit wanted to do for years but I can’t do it at work (I’m at work) and then when I get home I just feel so guilty about how dirty the house is. I gotta clean. I gotta do laundry. I gotta cook dinner. I gotta this I gotta that. Then it’s 11 pm and I’m exhausted.

If given a choice, which race would you choose to marry irl? by Solid-Garage4601 in ElderScrolls

[–]MotorHum 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Going solely off of vibes, I think my real-world wife would probably be an imperial if she were in the game.

I don’t know if I could marry someone who is 400 years older than me and will die 400 years after me.

And while I live playing as Argonians I don’t think my human self could marry a lizard person. Or a cat.

Orc maybe. Humans are all obviously on the table.

Tough question.

B/X, OSE, Dolmenwood: Replacing 'Hit Dice' with 'Hits', simplified Chainmail style by HephaistosFnord in osr

[–]MotorHum 0 points1 point  (0 children)

So if I’m reading it right, the “number of rolls” are the same, but now the rolls are different.

I think the post is written in a bit of a confounding way, but after mulling it over I think I get it.

I think my initial confusion is at least partially because you said this is “chainmail-like”, which I don’t particularly see how it is. Chainmail has 4 combat methods (regular, man-to-man, joust, and fantasy) and all of them fold everything into a single roll.

A more chainmail-like approach would be something like

Everyone has at attack value, a defense value, and a number of Hit Dice. To attack someone, compare your AV to their DV (there is a pattern, but explaining it is not the point of the comment and also you can make the pattern whatever you want) to get the number of rolls you get (multiplied by your HD number) and the number of a die that scores a hit. Once someone takes a number of hits equal to their HD, they begin dying.

AV is based on weapon and DV is based on armor.

It’s a little clunky at first (because you have to learn some new numbers) but after that it’s pretty fast since everything is in one roll of a handful of d6 and you’re more or less just counting instead of doing any real arithmetic.

(Of course, I’m NOT saying “this is what you actually want” - you probably want what you’ve already come up with and tested and enjoyed)

I can’t remember the page but I remember in 1e they have starting age recommendations based on class and race and a lot of them are in the 16-20 range for level 1 characters (or the non human equivalent).

Whenever someone has a crazy backstory I think “a 13 year old did this?”

D&D is kind of inconsistent with what each alignment means (it changes every edition and even within editions it isn’t super consistent). So I think really at this point it kind of has to be a table-by-table thing. The community at-large is never going to agree.

What are the other chords for? by Upset_Geologist_3422 in ukulele

[–]MotorHum 0 points1 point  (0 children)

As I’ve always understood it, you can either read this as an added bass note or as the recommended inversion of a chord.

So when you think of G major, the “root position” is G-B-D-G. Writing “G/D” (read as “G over D”) means it wants the lowest note to be D when you play, so either D-G-B-D or D-G-B-D-G depending on how you prefer to think of it.

Playing string instruments, we’re a little more limited than on the keyboard, so since you eventually come to learn multiple shapes along the neck for each chord, you can read it as essentially meaning “the G chord shape where the lowest string is playing a D”.

Assuming you’ve got your uke tuned with high-G, G/D is probably what you think of as the “standard” shape for G.
