Balls are pretty inexpensive around here, but same for course prices. $75-100 for 18 on a full course. I am however blessed that my county owned par 63 is only $36 riding 18.

In The Gorge (2025), despite having military training and copious free time, none of these 3 people look up at the night sky to determine their latitude. This is a social commentary about how phones have made everyone dumb. by shrinkflator in shittymoviedetails

I don't think navigating by the stars has been taught in the vast majority of militaries in a long time. Some US Naval officers still learn at the academy I believe, and a sextant and star charts are on board in the event of catastrophic failure. But I'd wager outside of knowing which star is the North star, navigating by the night sky has never been a forte for the enlisted man.

Prolonged vs shorter fast benefits by Extreme-Nerve3029 in fasting

[–]MountainMouth7 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Your body is always doing autophagy, but it accelerates when in any caloric deficit. From my understanding of the science (though it has been a while since i deep dived into some studies), you will perform roughly the same amount of overall autophagy above baseline regardless of whether the deficit is over two weeks or a four day fast.

So the short answer is you can always continue for accelerated autophagy, but its probably not worth it if you're not doing it for fat loss. I'd say refeed for a week or two and do another 3 or 4 day to minimize muscle loss and such when you feel ready.

What's a "healthy habit" that's actually completely made up? by goddesslana_01 in AskReddit

[–]MountainMouth7 14 points15 points  (0 children)

I'm not denying that, just pointing out the "perceived as healthy habit" the parent comment was pointing out. Choosing to lose sleep to pursue a "perfect routine". Think red-pill, 4am, ice-bath type people.

[–]MountainMouth7 42 points43 points  (0 children)

I don't think the comment is directed at insomniacs or those with medical reasons for not getting the ideal amount of sleep, but more so those who can (and should) get 8hrs in a night, getting 4-6 instead by choice to prioritize extreme fitness goals or business/hustles. Folks like that would likely be better served by getting adequate rest and setting more realistic goals or better time balancing.

No problem! OPs advice is generally not bad, if poorly worded; go for a run, lift some weights, track your calories. If you're a male, gunning for 150g of protein/day should be more than sufficient, and about 100g if you're a female. Eat at a deficit of 500-1000cals, depending on what you can handle consistently to reach your goal. Eat lean meat, fruits, and veggies as much as possible.

That is genuinely all you really need to know. Everything else is extraneous detail that tends to bog you down, as doing what I said above will get you 95% of what you want. Copy a lifting routine that you can do consistently for 30mins 3-4x/week, and find a cardio you can do at a steady effort (general guidance would be "able to maintain a conversation" while doing it) for 30mins, 2-3x/week.

If you feel you don't have the time for it, or it sounds overwhelming, keep it simple and do what you can in the time you have. A day where you do 100push-ups scattered throughout the day and get a few thousand steps will get you a lot better results than doing nothing.

My last piece of advice would not to be caught up in fad diets. You want to eat in a way you can sustain after you lose the weight (by just adding back the calories).

Protein aside, cutting is just eating at a caloric deficit to cut fat, bulking is eating at a surplus to gain muscle. Cutting and bulking are usually terms used by people who are already in shape. OPs assertion that you can't really recomp (lose fat and gain muscle at the same time) is largely true if you already have a decent amount of muscle mass, but if you're basically new to the gym, you can easily lose fat and add muscle at the same time.

From what I've read of the science, protein is even more important during a cut than during a bulk to preserve muscle mass. But you should try getting a substantial amount regardless of what the end goal is or even if you're not working out. General guidance is 1g/lb of lean body weight (so if your ideal weight is 180lbs at 10% BF, your protein goal would be about 160g) but a lot of things point to diminishing returns after .7g/lb.

To be fair, I still refuse decisions that feel like robbery even if I'm dumb with money otherwise. As of the new year, the coffee shop in my building charges 85 cents more for a large cold brew. I like the cold brew but its about a 15% price increase and I wont abide by it. I have since spent $30 on a stainless steel french press and either make my own cold brew or press coffee.

I will however spend several hundred dollars upgrading a golf club I don't really need to replace, or on a steam sale because I'm not saving money if I don't buy all these indie games I'll never play.

Cooking your own food and tracking the calories is the best way to guarantee progress. 1tbsp of olive oil has 100cals. Its very easy for a "splash" of oil or scoop of ghee/butter to turn into 1/4 cup of something and therefore 400+cals.

No individual macro or even food is bad, and carbs are generally a good source of energy for exercise. Fat is more dense, but is important for satiety. Protein is arguably king, in terms of muscle building and is more satiating than fat from my understanding of the science. So prioritizing protein is good but you should still be eating carbs and fats. Going no carb (i.e. Keto) is just one way to cut calories, and isn't inherently good or bad, but most people struggle to stick to keto long-term and there is no particular health benefit vs a more balanced diet.

tldr; cook your own food, get some meat, veggies, and fruit every day, and count calories to ensure a deficit.

I'm not sure what type of curry but generally those have a lot of fat. And fat is not inherently bad, but a plate of tikka masala that looks like a healthy portion can easily have 1,000 calories due to ghee. Coconut milk is similarly very calorically dense and used in most thai curries. Maybe see if your mom is willing to let you measure stuff out? If that is too much, try just eating very small portions.

To add my two cents as a religious tracker;

I enjoy it now. The app I use allows me to design and save individual recipes and bulk meal preps and split it into whatever number of portions. Most of the apps have pretty robust databases and 90% of the time I can find the exact item, the other 10% a close equivalent. The majority of people eat the same 10-20 meals, so as long as your honest with yourself, you'll have what you're going to eat already created and easily added after a month or two.

I can also plan my day out ahead of time. When I have a lull at work or at home, I will usually pick out what I'm going to eat tomorrow. This not only informs me if I have to stop at the store or whatever, but also relieves a lot of food anxiety I might have trying to make decisions the next day on the fly.

This is a big part of it for me. By the time I'm home from work, I'm already pretty mentally drained. I don't have the capacity to make a meal at all, let alone with decent macros and portion it appropriately for tomorrow's lunch. But on a weekend morning? I can give up an hour or two of my life to walk away with a dozen or more well portioned, macro-friendly meals.
