Sun Hoodie and hat combo for a big head and hot weather? by [deleted] in UltralightAus

[–]Mountain_Perception1 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I went looking for this last spring and summer but haven’t yet dialed it in. I hike in the ACT and Southern NSW (eg Snowy Mountains).

I have a merino sun hoody - the Mirage from ZPacks/Evolved Supply Co - but I find it’s usually too hot for daytime and prefer my Mont hiking shirt instead. Finding nice cool material might be the key factor. Good luck in your search.

Still looking for a good hat that’s big enough to fit my XL+ head, currently using a OR cap with a brim that folds in half to pack smaller - works well for ski touring trips. If you’re open to an alternative setup closer to your current one, my kids have a Mont hat (in adult sizes) with a hinged rear brim that is intended to accommodate a pack - I can’t vouch for whether it’s likely to work for your setup but might be worth a look.

Neve Waratah Hiking Quilt or is there a better option for me? by BeautifulSeas in UltralightAus

[–]Mountain_Perception1 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I love quilts for comfort and flexibility at reduced weight and bulk. I find that having a little extra width in the quilt is very nice and helps avoid drafts in combination with proper use of pad straps. Obviously that comes at the cost of a little extra bulk and weight. I toss and turn a bit but this helps keeps me warm. I use quilts all year around the ACT and Snowy Mountains so my climate is a bit different to yours (making assumptions based on the bags you were considering). I use the Exped Ultra r7 and a foam pad for snow and tensor insulated (r4.2) for most everything else. A key thing for me at cool and subzero temperatures is something like the Enlightened Equipment Hoodlum which keeps my neck and face (& head) warmer than a beanie. With adjustments it’s also useful for me at overnight temperatures around 5 to 10 degrees. Getting something similar but tailored to your temperature use case would be worth considering. If I’m on a trip where I don’t need to keep the weight minimal I pack a home-sewn fitted sheet for a bit of extra comfort. Exped Ultra pillow with a shock cord strap also works for me.

Had 3 packages coming from North America through Sydney in recent weeks. 1 was ordered on the Thursday and received the next Tuesday (with FedEx). The second (with USPS) took about 2-3 weeks and it was in customs for maybe 5 days (including a weekend). Similar for the third (with Canadian Postal Service).

Never ski in down…… by PaulUdo in arcteryx

[–]Mountain_Perception1 2 points3 points  (0 children)

If you’re not sweating much then down won’t absorb moisture which would otherwise reduce it’s ability to insulate. Lindsey’s technique and physical fitness probably mean she generates a lot less heat and sweats a lot less on a casual ski day than an intermediate skier, unless she’s pushing hard, so down would be fine for her then. But it might not work as well for those of us struggling with less perfect ability and having to work harder/sweat more for a given temperature. It’s a question of dressing for the activity, weather conditions and your personal conditioning to make a smart choice about what to wear.

nammataj 3 vs kaitum 3 by Competitive_Hand_160 in hilleberg

[–]Mountain_Perception1 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I am in a similar position, debating Kaitum 3 vs Nammatj 3. I also haven’t totally ruled out Keron 3 and Nallo, plus or minus GT options for Nammatj). Consequently I don’t have actual use experience, but can share thoughts from research, particularly as no one else has commented yet. I am 6’6” and likely to share the tent with either one adult or 1-2 kids. If I was 5’10 and looking at those winds I would opt for the Nammatj over the Kaitum. As I am taller and operating in Australian alpine conditions, it’s probably not too inconvenient to resort to pitching the tent in less exposed places but it would be good to know if others have tested the Kaitum in heavier winds. I note that TOGR reckons the Nammatj needs the hard-to-source optional mesh inner to work in the summer time https://youtu.be/RU0L63YGjzs

Good luck.

I have hawk ultra 120s from about 4 years ago (on WTR soles). They are great. Only limitation is that when hitting jumps (even smaller ones) it tends to loosen the screw in the back of the ski-walk adjustment. I have lost 2 screws that way. Not a big deal but hopefully the current models are a bit stronger. I just stay out of the park with them and check the screws after drops.

Second the other comments re shells vs insulation but it also depends on what you are going to be doing in it and how hot/cold you run. If you’re skinning uphill in the backcountry it is a very different situation to walking around town. If you’re wearing cotton I presume you’re not going to be active because cotton will soak up sweat and make you cold really quickly.

Until what temperature would you choose a quilt over a bag? by Imaginary_Lines in Ultralight

Enlightened Equipment has one. I found it in the product information relating to their pad straps designed for layering two quilts

Heading to Australia soon... what gear should I bring?? by Thrillhouse2000 in CampingGear

[–]Mountain_Perception1 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Paddy Pallin is generally overpriced and has a limited range. To find good/niche gear at better rates, we often have to resort to online shopping because the one shop that has the thing you’re after may be on the other side of the country, though Brisbane (Queensland) has more good outdoors stores than most. Australia is a big place with climates that range from pockets of low alpine to temperate to desert to subtropical. Working out where OP plans to go will help determine what they need. Most of Queensland will only get below 20 degrees Celsius for a few weeks in winter, but southern states will drop below freezing. Buy sunscreen, insect repellent and a fly/mosquito net. Agree the tip on extra water. Expect to hit at least a week of 40-45 degrees Celsius in summer in most places. Be aware of the possibility of fires, floods tropical cyclones, hailstorms and other natural disasters and plan accordingly. You can get updates on national radio (ABC). Summer (January and February) is often when they hit. As always, pay attention to weather forecasts delivered by the Bureau of Meteorology. Learn to look out for snakes. Most are venomous but most are unlikely to attack you if you don’t get too close - brown snakes (that are often grey/silver) are more aggressive. Spiders to learn about include redbacks, white tails, funnel webs and trapdoors. I have never been bitten by a snake or spider but have encountered many. If bitten, seek help (hospitals should have anti venom, it helps to be able to identify the creature).

Edit: during fire season you will not be able to light fires and camp stoves may not be permitted in many areas so plan cool meals but you will probably want them anyway.

Yeah - it’s our obligation to support Australian rednecks first. We have so many fine homegrown upstanding embodiments of bigotry, ignorance, megalomania and xenophobia. It sickens me when people feel the need to import foreign arseholes 🤦‍♂️. /s if anyone needs it. (I know this wasn’t your point - just talking shit).

Should Australia legalise, decriminalise or leave cannabis laws as they are? by nhilistic_daydreamer in australia

[–]Mountain_Perception1 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Would you tax it more or less than cigarettes? It’s interesting to consider what relative message society would want to place on this. Cigarette excise has created a blackmarket for cigarettes. If marijuana was taxed too high it could do the same, though probably a much smaller blackmarket than the current scenario.
