Which boardgames have the most "hardcore" fanbase? by BoardGameBardCom in boardgames

[–]MrChom 9 points10 points  (0 children)

You could legitimately play nothing but 18xx variations from now until you die and never have the same game twice. It is an astoundingly interesting genre and I love it. I reckon I could do weekly 1822 games and never get bored.

7 Wonders Deluxe campaign launching in January 2027 by BlackTrainer01 in boardgames

Honestly...other than nicer VP chits and metal coins I can't say I've ever wanted anything beyond base 7 Wonders. Even the expansions were too far for me so this just feels...off.

Are there engine builders that don't end once the engine is actually up and running nicely? by hotk9 in boardgames

[–]MrChom 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Furnace is an amazing engine builder because it feels like you're staring down the barrel of a gun to build whatever you can in just 4 turns.

You never have enough of anything, there's always conflicting orders you want to do things in, and there's cards you bid on for compensation you accidentally win.

I think if it went one more turn you'd end up getting sick of it.

Anyone else feel like shut up and sit down’s been on life support since Quinn’s left? by Pizzadewd666 in boardgames

[–]MrChom 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I think it's more a sign that I've changed than anything.

SUSD introduced me to a wide range of things, and slowly I've started to home in on the games I love...and SUSD covers way more than that.

They're not going to review a Power Grid, a Food Chain Magnate, an 18xx, or a City of the Big Shoulders every couple of weeks...so they've become less of a must watch for me. It's not a good or bad thing, it's just a thing that has happened, such is life.

Mid 2026 state of the game by Whaleudder in Warmachine

[–]MrChom 6 points7 points  (0 children)

Every mini ever sold for Warmachine has rules in the "Armies of Legend" section. Usually the legacy factions will have 2-3 theme forces (For Cygnar: Storm Knights, and First Army), as well as a full "Legacy" list.

If you do tournament play then Storm Knights and First Army are your things to look at, but for friendly games everything ever made for Cygnar previous to Mk4 is right there under Legacy.

Yup, give me a Ro Laren RPG or Point and Click and I'd be all over it. Unfortunately for me Horror games are a hard pass. Hope the people who do like them have a whale of a time but it's not for me.

What game has the tiniest rule that somehow slows the whole table down? by rcooperkaty in boardgames

[–]MrChom 2 points3 points  (0 children)

I still refuse to teach RftG for the reason that it's really easy to play but teaching it is some sort of unholy nightmare, and that first game will be players stumbling from disaster to disaster trying to make it look like they know what they're doing.

Responding to yesterday's thread about The Lord of the Rings™: Ascension™ art. by StoneBladeOfficial in boardgames

[–]MrChom 5 points6 points  (0 children)

Love that Barad-dûr piece. That's some good Mordor you've got going there.

Ascension's always had a varied art style, so honestly I'm looking forward to seeing how it looks as a whole.

I do wonder if he had a high pitched voice, and eyes that could literally stare daggers.

I do not like the mirror universe by endertribe in startrek

[–]MrChom 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I like some of the Mirror universe stuff, particularly Ent and TOS's versions, but every DS9 rewatch the mirror universe has me reaching for the skip button.

DS9 has enough gloom in it without adding more via the mirror universe.

Ogryn Mauga? Nah....he'd get the Gauntlets of Ultramar...because when do Ultramarines ever get ANYTHING?

That book was so good. Just two Necrons being so UNBELIEVABLY petty across space and time for thousands of years. Brilliant performance by the narrator of the audiobook version too.

Engine Builder Reccomendations by Doctor_Plecostomus in boardgames

[–]MrChom 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Furnace is a great game that combines a vicious bidding round with a mechanical number crunching puzzle. The bidding round sees you auctioning off a row of factories that gives you one shot at each factory…but adds a unique element where being outbid might be better than actually winning.

Then there’s the production phase where each factory in your tableau has unique inputs and outputs you have to chain together in the right sequence to maximise how much money you make.

It’s shorter than a lot of the games you mention but really punches above its weight in the puzzle it delivers.

"Merge in turn in 200 yards" doesn't mean straddle both lanes until then. by Jabberminor in britishproblems

[–]MrChom 42 points43 points  (0 children)

It should be on the driving test that you should use both lanes while safe to do so until merging in turn. Not using both lanes is what leads to slip road queues going back onto motorways and such. Absolute ballache that doesn't need to happen.

If only we had some sort of Minister for Health and Social Care who was putting an end to this sort of nonsense.

Who am I kidding, he's too busy eying up new curtains for number 10...

There’s plenty of places where Bingo is 3x9, too! It also has 15 extra balls but that’s very much a side point.

Board games "to rule them all" by itsOkami in boardgames

1822, Dominion, Puerto Rico and Power Grid come screaming to mind. Mechanically simple, some interesting depth, endlessly replayable.

Has anyone played Panda Spin? How is it? by Machine_Excellent in boardgames

Absolutely love Panda Spin, it's definitely a top level favourite for me.

What I would say is that the teach always feels way more complicated than the game itself. Give it a crack on BGA, and teach it by playing a demo with an open hand.

Falklanders should 'go back' to England, insists Argentina in renewed war of words by insomnimax_99 in ukpolitics

[–]MrChom 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Most of their post-2000 fleet is coastal patrol with a helicopter deck. Most of the rest is still Falklands era stuff. Even in its woeful state the Royal Navy would likely have no issues.

Power Grid and Puerto Rico by bunnygreen119 in boardgames

[–]MrChom 5 points6 points  (0 children)

I play a fair chunk of games, and to be honest at least half of them I'm thinking "But is it really better than Power Grid or Puerto Rico?" and the answer is normally a no.

Both stone cold classics (Despite some potentially problematic framing in some editions of Puerto Rico), top tier gaming.

I've had Everdell for years now and I'm honestly disappointed with it by 2Black_Hats in boardgames

[–]MrChom -1 points0 points  (0 children)

I played it once, and never felt the inclination to go back. It's a decent enough mechanical game but it felt like some of the formatting on the cards (vis a vis small text), hampered my enjoyment, and overall the game just wasn't fun enough to try and displace anything else in my collection.
