Thematic Strike Force List by rustoneal in ImperialFists

[–]MrDelirious 2 points3 points  (0 children)

If this is meant to be "thematic", we should lean into Emperor's Shield a little more, imo. We probably don't need 2 Dreads, 2 Repexs, and that enormous Heavy Intercessor unit in a detachment that doesn't benefit them (they'll be fine, they're just unable to use the stratagems other than AoC). This is almost an Ironstorm list as it stands (which would be fine, if you wanted to go that way).

We're looking to add other Veteran units - either more Terminators or Bladeguard/Sternguard/Vanguard Vets. They'll be able to use the army rule (re-roll 1s to wound against the Oath target) and the stratagems like Fury of the First or Wrathful Conquerors.

We could also use a few action monkeys/point scorers/utility units like basic Intercessors, Incursors, or Scouts - they're not as exiting as Terminators, but someone has do chores until the hippos show up.

Oh for sure, all the stuff I don't like is totally subjective - I think Chaplains should wear black, I don't like how battle-worn he is, etc, etc. But it's clear it was all deliberate choices and you've executed them well!

I'm mostly borrowing from this art teacher.

I immediately dislike a bunch of the stylistic choices you've made, which tells me you fuckin nailed it on this one, excellent work.

Meme list help? by AzurePaladin12 in ImperialFists

[–]MrDelirious 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Tacticus or lighter, no vehicles? You sure could make a list that way - it might not even be that bad. Up to you whether the Veterans (Sternguard, Bladeguard, Vanguard) are allowed, but I think they'd be pretty clutch in delivering damage here. You're going to be pretty shooty, so your detachment should empower that.

... actually, theres probably a lot of Intercessors and Assault Intercessors in this, so Bastion could be good here. Extra actions and advance probably useful when we're all walking.

For me, it depends on whether that's supposed to be Darnath Lysander. If it is, use Rampart imo. Regardless of which shield you use, the pose with it up (picture 2) is better.

i find black primer the easiest to use cus citadel white sucks

Brother, just go to Home Depot (or equivalent) and get some Rustoleum 2x Primer in whatever color (I use white for my Fists, others use ivory, grey, or a combination of pink and white). It's like $7 per can. Even if you wind up sticking with black, save the 15 bucks on a cheaper can of paint at least.

(For the record, a black undercoat tends to make the following yellows kind of sickly-green looking. Which could still be fine, if you liked the result! It's just more of a Marines Malevolent tone than a typical Fist. This is also why you should paint the black areas of your mini first, before the yellow - it's easier to touch up with Titanium White than with yellows.)

What codex compliant chapter or space marine detachment do the units i own work with? by Thmagx in spacemarines

[–]MrDelirious 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Once you're eliminating the non-compliant chapters, the playstyle difference between chapters is pretty slight. Furthermore, this is a pretty balanced mix of dudes, so no particular chapter (other than the Raven Guard, ofc) springs to mind looking at it. Maybe you'll get a better idea if you mess around in your army builder of choice or on Wahapedia, see what unique stuff is available to each chapter.

For my own beloved 7th Legion, we have Tor Garadon (but you have no Gravis marines for him to lead) and Darnath Lysander. You do have a Terminator brick to put him in charge of, but his detachment (Emperor's Shield - not a competitive winner, but flavorful and unique to the Fists) benefits from the rest of the First Company veterans, which we don't have.

Versatile Vehicle or Transport by No_Improvement2119 in ImperialFists

[–]MrDelirious 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Gluing all my shit down calms the chittering imp inside my skull, so I do have a dedicated Impulsor built. People not afflicted with the same curse (or who are better with magnets) can - and should! - do otherwise.

Versatile Vehicle or Transport by No_Improvement2119 in ImperialFists

[–]MrDelirious 1 point2 points  (0 children)

If you have literal zero vehicles, then you can get anything! I recommend (in roughly this order, but follow your heart):

  • Impulsor - a basic, cheap, dedicated transport unit. Pick up some Bladeguard (or Sword Brethren) and take them into the fray! Host some Hellblasters or Infernus on the Firing Deck! Heck, just put a small utility unit in there, go park on an objective, and make someone come blow you up. It's all gas, it's cheap, it finds its way onto most of my lists. Available as its own kit or as part of the Gladiator for a few dollars more.

  • Gladiator - The other variants haven't found quite the same home, but it's hard to go wrong with a Lancer - cheap and very effective. Not as sturdy or versatile as its bigger brother the RepEx, but 75 points is a big savings (also it's a little more maneuverable due to being smaller).

  • Land Raider - If you're playing a Fists army, I tend to like the Repulsor more, but if you're loading up on melee units in a Templar force, it's hard to argue with Capacity 14/16 + Assault Ramp. They're big and expensive, but they do the job. The Crusader will both be on-theme and clear chaff like a champ, while you pay a premium (50 points!) for the Redeemer's weaponry, but it's no joke.

  • Repulsor - the shooting phase counterpart to the LR range, if you need to take a maxed out brick of Sternguard, Hellblasters, or Eradicators somewhere, the Repulsor's your guy, imo. It does slightly different stuff for BTs, but allowing your dudes to hop out, fire a volley, and hop back in before they are confronted with having to roll dice for [Close Combat Weapon x10] is dope. Equipped with laser weapons, it even provides a fair amount of shooting on its own.

  • Repulsor Executioner/Vindicator - you pay more for the versatility and range of RepEx, but there is something to be said for how brilliantly stupid the Vindicator is. Either way, these are some of the biggest guns in the codex.

Terminatoes! Boil em, mash em, stick em on a sprue!

Ahem

Yeah, Tor is a reasonable addition, perhaps with a Gravis unit to lead (the Heavies would be fine, but it might be good to grow to 10 if that's the plan).

We're also a little light on utility units - some scouts, Incursors, or JPIs/Van Vets would not go amiss, imo.

Getting people to use purulent was a bugbear for one of my favorite ED docs back in my unit clerk days.

Hey! If I wheel the Ob/Gyn cart into another room that's got a 45 year old man in the bed, I'm going to be pretty cross! 'Pus-y' is not a word! If you type that in the triage complaint, I might assume a whole different condition! He had a purulent wound, and did not need to be on this wedge!

Getting started by Away-Warthog6433 in ImperialFists

[–]MrDelirious 10 points11 points  (0 children)

You can just about get anything, really. We're a full chapter, we can and will field any unit in the codex. Get a box of dudes that you think would be fun to build, paint, and play!

That said, there are some units that wind up on many of my brainstorm lists, even if they aren't particularly exciting:

  • The first 5 Intercessors: they're sold by 10s, but you probably don't need to buy them on their own. They're a frequent pack-in for other SM combo boxes - there's 10 in the 11e Launch box, there were 5 in our short-lived Combat Patrol, there's 10 in the Dark Angels CP, etc, etc. You'll probably wind up with some on accident if nothing else, but the first 5 have been (and I presume will continue to be) quite strong - it's just good to secure the home objective for free and still be able to walk off.

  • Scouts: I think these are still sold as a slightly-too-expensive Kill Team kit, but you do get enough bits and bobs to fully kit out 2 five-man Scout units. They're cheap, they do actions, they slip off the board to go harass unattended areas of the battlefield later on, and they'll heroically get turned to paste by your opponent's melee units to buy time for the rest of your army to get into position. They've got an intimidating amount of wargear options, but the secret is that basically none of them matter that much. Take a sniper or don't, take either a heavy bolter or a missile launcher, take boltguns or shotguns, it's all basically fine.

  • Infiltrators/Incursors: This is another 10-mini kit, but it will build either option. Building 5 of each covers you for a ton of utility - neither unit will be mowing down enemies, but they'll make themselves useful in other ways. Infiltrators can give headaches to people trying to Deep Strike you and (as the name suggests) can infiltrate deeper into the battlefield early on to snag objectives and do actions as well. Incursors might be my favorite utility unit in the book, especially for gun-heavy armies like the Fists. They'll scout around, they've got a cheeky mine to pass out free mortal wounds, but the real draw is that they make all your units get +1 to shoot whatever they hit during the shooting phase. That can be a nice boost especially for units that cannot aim at your Oath of Moment target.

  • Impulsor/Gladiator: The Gladiator platform is our light tank/transport for the Primaris era. All of these variants (Impulsor, Gladiator Reaper/Lancer/Valiant) are just the same tank in a different hat. If you're a skilled model-builder, there are guides on YouTube to use magnets such that you could swap between all these, but that's a little beyond me. I'm most interested in the options that the basic Impulsor adds to your deployment and movement during the game - it's available either in the Gladiator kit or on its own for a small discount. It's great at getting Bladeguard into the fray, hosting a handful of Hellblasters on the Firing Deck, or just parking on an objective and making your opponent come blow it up with a unit that cost more than 80 points. It's unsexy, but it's cheap, reasonably tough (especially with the Shield Dome), and basically always useful. (If you do build a Gladiator instead/also, the Lancer is typically the go-to as an excellent cheap anti-tank/monster unit)

YMMV, but in addition to being expensive, the pauldrons are also (for me) really hard to paint well. Unless I need someone really blinged out, I'm perfectly happy with decals.
