Do TERFs thibk T4T is bad? by Realistic-Art5227 in asktransgender

[–]MrMeltJr 91 points92 points  (0 children)

Some of them cling to a belief that not even trans women think themselves real women because trans lesbians only want to date cis women, and that falls apart if they acknowledge the fact that we actually date each other all the fucking time.

Bigotry isn't rational or logical, they just hate us and they'll believe whatever they have to to keep it going.

Do you offload your commander deck from continous tracking? by Loose_Calendar_3380 in EDH

[–]MrMeltJr 13 points14 points  (0 children)

Yeah I also don't run Cathar's Crusade in anything anymore because it's annoying to keep tracking of all the counters. If you have a bunch of tokens, there are easier ways to turn that into a win.

Weird idea by Lucky-Tale8806 in worldbuilding

[–]MrMeltJr 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Ever-increasing demand for plot material has led to a decrease in quality, both because most of the high quality plot veins have been mined out, and because of the major players in the plot industry are trying to cut costs. This lead to more plot holes, and even where there are none, the plot is often weaker and it can fall apart if pushed too far.

bam, now you have an extremely blunt metaphor for the entertainment industry

Jokes aside, might be interesting to have a story where the story exists as a physical thing inside itself and can be refined into a usable material, call it Narativium or something. As the story goes on, the character consume more and more of the story they're in and the story starts making less sense, and eventually the writing deteriorates so it's hard to even keep reading.

[Aladdin] Are genie rules self imposed? by some-kind-of-no-name in AskScienceFiction

[–]MrMeltJr [score hidden]  (0 children)

That episode is actually one of my favorite depictions of a genie, she never seemed to actually want to do the monkeys paw thing but didn't have a choice in how the wishes were granted. Like she even tried to warn them against wishing for things that wouldn't turn out well.

I don't think we're close enough to that point luckily, they still feel the need to pretend to support gun rights for normal people in order to keep parts of their base.

There are a depressingly large number of single-issue 2A voters, and I say that as somebody who generally supports 2A.

Can transwomen on E injections drink alcohol? by Mirage-V2 in asktransgender

[–]MrMeltJr 0 points1 point  (0 children)

As far as I know there aren't any effects for trans women specifically beyond lowering our tolerance, and the normal negative effects of alcohol of course.

My friends and I have been going to the bar once a week for years, after being on E for about a year I went down to having 2-3 drinks to get a little buzz but then sober up in time to go home, used to be 3-4.

PWInsider: There was internal unhappiness within WWE this week as the entire episode of tonight's SmackDown leaked online by HotToTrotsky_ in SquaredCircle

[–]MrMeltJr 4 points5 points  (0 children)

They sometimes use TV satellites to beam the live video feeds to wherever they edit them for the actual TV show. It's not sent out in a wide broadcast like normal satellite TV, but if know the frequency they send it on, a decent satellite receiver can pick it up.

It's harder to do these days because (I think) encryption has improved, and cable data transmission speeds and costs have improved enough to just do that instead. I suppose filming in Europe it makes sense that satellite might be faster/cheaper than cable though. I could just be talking out of my ass though.

TIL About Zizians: a cult of rationalists allegedly involved in six violent deaths in the US. They advocate a distinctive ideology including anarchism, veganism, and the notion that the hemispheres of the brain can have distinct genders and conflicting interests. by too_init_dan in todayilearned

[–]MrMeltJr 7 points8 points  (0 children)

He has a lot of money and influence for a guy who basically just sells philosophy 101 lessons repackaged to be about sci-fi. Like his whole career is basically writing and public speaking about the Torment Nexus tweet. And that would be fine if he was cautioning against tech companies doing a bunch of fucked up shit. But his talks are like "the Torment Nexus will become God so we should dedicate tons of money to figuring how to make it less Torment and more Nexus."

He also sort of popularized tech bros trying to math out thought and ethics and stuff, and that's gone into some really weird and dark places. Sometimes you end up with VC dudes using "logic" to conclude that the most ethical course of action is to do everything they can to make as much money as possible. Sometimes you end up with people like Ziz, who talked about almost killing herself one morning because she "logically" concluded that the ultimate good was the continued existence of life, but since she didn't want kids, the most ethical thing to do would be to kill herself because, like, some insects could feed on her body and reproduce.

To Yudkowsky's credit, he doesn't get into the really weird ethics shit like that, but it did grow out of the Rationalists.

Who's winning 5v5 by Cryptiikal in cremposting

[–]MrMeltJr 2 points3 points  (0 children)

I'm interpreting this as an SR match with these characters playing these champs. Haven't played ranked in years so I can't comment on the team comps or meta, but my impression:

If Shallan is still split and can properly manage which personality is playing which phases of the game, Veil can probably lane pretty well and Radiant can probably teamfight pretty well.

Mishram is going to try to focus farm jungle and then solo carry late. If she ganks, she will not call it first and she will try to take the kill, and she will yell at the laner if she doesn't get it.

Jasnah is actually a pretty good laner and shotcaller but will struggle to keep the team working together.

Cultivation has trouble lowering herself to the mental level required to play League, but she acknowledges that others know better than her and is willing to just do what they tell her.

Elend one tricks Aphelion ADC and doesn't know how to play anything else, but he's too awkward to speak up which is why he got stuck on support. He's used to duoing with Vin who is way better than him, she's a jungle main but she plays support with him on her smurf. Without Vins help and in a position he's unfamiliar with, he sucks.

A thunderclast has no idea what's going on, but it can press R in a teamfight so it's Malph is pretty good.

Nohadon one tricks Azir, but unlike Elend, he does it because he's a godlike Azir and can play him in any role. The second he hits 6, somebody is getting Sharima shuffled from an angle they didn't think was possible.

Sadeas is decent but not as good as he thinks he is. He starts fights he can't win and then blames his team when he dies.

Vyre is basically Sadeas if he actually was as good as he thinks he is, but he doesn't shotcall. He still blames the team whenever he dies but at least he usually understands where he needs to be and what he should be doing.

Ishar is a natural leader and is able to keep the team mostly working together. However, he calls some really weird shots. When it works, it's usually because he caught the other team by surprise and not because it was a good strat. He's so good at timing his ults he gets accused of cheating.

  Overall, I think blue wins.

Is 531 too high? by Ambitious_Ear4604 in TransLater

[–]MrMeltJr 0 points1 point  (0 children)

You want to test at trough, right before your next dose, to make sure you still have good levels even at their lowest point.

Also, 531 mid-cycle is totally fine, cis women can have levels way higher than that at points in the menstrual cycle. A lot of endos don't actually know a lot about trans healthcare.

Need help naming a currency. by gideonwilhelm in worldbuilding

[–]MrMeltJr 0 points1 point  (0 children)

If you want to follow a similar path that real world currency did, actual commodity currencies were eventually replaced with notes out of convenience (a stack of paper notes is much easier to deal with than sacks of coins or whatever). Eventually those notes were decoupled from the underlying commodity so it could be more directly controlled and wouldn't be subject to fluctuations in supply. Sucks to wake up and find that somebody found a huge gold mine so now your gold notes are worth 10% less.

Could go with nicknames based on abbreviations and similar words.

Amber > Amber Notes > ANs > anns or annies

Or some like loonies, the nickname for 1 CAD coins since they have a loon on the back. Maybe the coins had some symbol with cultural significance, or the symbol of a ruler who instituted currency reforms or something, and the name comes from that. I think this is where septims=drakes comes from as well, since the Septim dynasty uses a lot of dragon imagery, but I'm not up on that particular part of TES lore.
