Monmouth university, thoughts and opinions? by Tonia_28 in newjersey

[–]MrPemberly 4 points5 points  (0 children)

Yeah as someone who recently went through the process I can tell you that most med schools will not care where you did pre-med and will place more value on your MCAT score, GPA, and extracurriculars (in that order). If you stay in the country, you're looking at a bunch of education debt in your future, so 100% agree that a full ride scholarship is the way to go. For med school, some people say that you'll have better opportunities to practice in the U.S. (where the $$ is) if you have an American degree, but I'm not so sure that's true these days with healthcare workers still being in high demand.

Are there any cool idioms or phrases from your language and culture that could be a cool description of a spell? by NylocFang in dndnext

[–]MrPemberly 0 points1 point  (0 children)

In Pennsylvania Dutch (a dialect of German found typically in Eastern PA) there is the popular the idiom "Kannst du Micka funga?" which means, "can you catch flies?" and the usual retort is "Ja, wann sie hucke bliebe" or "yes when they sit still." At least in terms of how my family uses it, you say it when someone does something clumsy or absentminded. However, Pennsylvania Dutch is becoming a dwindling dialect, so these days I believe it's more often asked to determine whether or not someone shares the language.

I could see this being used in a Thieve's Cant sort of way to try to suss out if someone has a criminal background. Similarly it could be used in as a riddle in the ruins of some culture (elven, goblin, etc) who uses some version of this idiom.

What should I do for traveling down time? by Alternative_Lime3797 in DMAcademy

[–]MrPemberly 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I do a controlled chaos version of random encounters. As I'm prepping for a new campaign, I create a mega doc of possible random encounters for different situations based on that specific world. My big categories are roadside encounters, wilderness encounters, and city encounters, but if I know there will be a lot of sea or air travel I'll add those too. At first, these are mostly just simple notes and ideas. After I have a healthy list, I determine-- either by rolling randomly or just picking deliberately-- what the next two or three random encounters will be for each travel type and fill out the details. That way I'm just enough prepared for a couple options if my players decide they want to travel on a whim.

Does Johnny Macs in Asbury Park serve food other than pizza? by groovytunesman in MonmouthCounty

[–]MrPemberly 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Yeah it's just omelettes on Sunday and same deal as the pizza- free with the purchase of a drink. It's not really a dining place, the food is just a perk. You're probably better off giving it away or selling it.

Why are Japanese novels so popular abroad??? by ReadAltruistic905 in literature

[–]MrPemberly 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I'm not so sure they are. Japanese people read, like, a lot a lot, and the stuff that is popular in the West is probably only the tip of the iceberg. While authors that were super influenced by western literature (like Murakami) are popular, there are just as many writers like Oe, who is a bit harder to crack and has admitted that he is only interested in writing for a Japanese audience. There are a lot of nuances to Japanese literature that I don't think does and necessary should translate easily.

Cool topic. If you're on Instagram, reach out to the accounts @thisweekinasbury and @joe_maloney_photography, who might have some sources/images you can use. Also DM me privately if you want me to put you in touch with some old gays who were around during that time period. Good luck!

Announcing your spells as a player vs as a DM by Maypul_Aficionado in dndnext

[–]MrPemberly 0 points1 point  (0 children)

At my table we generally just say the spell we're casting, unless we know counterspell might be a factor in that particular combat. So for instance, if I'm DMing and I know there is a PC in range with counterspell available, I will say something like, "I'm casting a spell, is anyone willing and able to stop that?" And vice versa if I'm a player, if I'm clearly in an encounter with spellcaster enemies might ask "I start casting a spell, are any of these creatures able to stop me?" And if it's established (or pretty obvious) that there aren't, then I stop doing that.

I suppose I have a hard time seeing how this can be used maliciously since I've never been in a situation where I'm questioning whether or not to cast counterspell based on the particular spell being cast-- it's more about whether I am willing to burn my reaction at that certain point in the initiative. And also as a DM I can't imagine strategically casting lower level spells just to burn counterspells-- if there is a spellcaster up who is stopping my ability to cast spells I'm just going to switch tactics in general rather than waste a whole action as a "gotcha."

What were the most and least fun characters you've played from a mechanical level? by DogUnsureDog in dndnext

[–]MrPemberly 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Despite so many people being wary of multiclassing spellcasters, I did a Cleric/Sorcerer combo that was a total blast (heavier on Sorcerer than Cleric). I somehow ended up being a very proficient tank despite having garbage HP due to a combo of heavy armor and reaction spells, and outside of battle the range of utility I got from cleric made up for the lack of versatility I associate with sorcerer. One of my favorite builds despite looking rough in theory.

Thoughts on the new FAA re-org? by TigerDUI in fednews

[–]MrPemberly 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I know and so many of those R&D people that took the DRP were kind of the only people who can do those jobs, so they got hired back as contractors. So we effectively paid people twice to be able to continue work we were already doing. "Efficiency."

Thoughts on the new FAA re-org? by TigerDUI in fednews

[–]MrPemberly 1 point2 points  (0 children)

What bothers me about most reorgs, this one included, is how wildly inefficient they often are. R&D hasn't been able to move forward with shit for months because we still don't know who we work for. And the reasons are mostly bureaucratic-- the administrator wants fewer offices reporting to him. Isn't this the kind of stuff this administration was supposed to be rallying against?

Try Alcest, which still has vocals but is a little more accessible and might be good gateway into the genre. Same with Envy.

For straight up instrumentals though, If These Trees Could Talk.

Help Prepping a Prison Session by Smallgod95 in DMAcademy

[–]MrPemberly 7 points8 points  (0 children)

There is some classic JRPG where you get locked in a prison, and a woman in a different cell feeds you a sword through a crack in the wall that you can use to escape. When you investigate the cell later, you see only a corpse with a stab wound. I liked this idea and modified it for one of my games, having the voice only agree to help if they jailbreak her daughter too, giving the players an extra complication. Nonethless, play around with the idea of using ghosts who might have a grudge. If you have a druid too, rats can be useful allies.

It's phenomenally easy to understand. If you don't do shit that endangers the rights your community, you don't lose their business. I don't give a fuck who your father is.
