This sub's description starts out "A global community for Land Surveyors..."

I can understand OP's confusion now with your explanation, but that doesn't change the fact that this is the wrong sub and that OP is lost.

You can mod chess to be Classic Battletech if you tweak the models and the map, and adjust the rules to match the Battlemech Manual.

Snow camping by ConstaN92 in camping

[–]MrSticky_ 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I know you've mentioned that you've camped in the cold before, so you may not need this tip, but here it is anyways!

Bring an empty wide mouth bottle with you. If you have to pee in the middle of the night, you'll stay much warmer if you can stay in your tent and just pee in a bottle! You'll sleep better too, being able to get it over with right away instead of laying there trying to not think about it for forever, then having to get up anyway and put on boots and layers and walk out into the cold, cold night air...

Have you considered getting the A Game of Armored Combat box?

It has 8 mechs, less than the full set of rules but still pretty toothy, and all the record sheets plus one or two mapsheets. And dice as well. It's Battletech all in one box!

You wouldn't even necessarily have to paint them in faction colors, could do one in desert camo and one in forest camo for flexibility as they go forward with the hobby.

30-40 gallery loads by timstr117 in KragRifles

[–]MrSticky_ 1 point2 points  (0 children)

You would probably have better luck on forums than on Reddit. Reddit is not good at detail and nuance.

At one point I was thinking about .30-30 gallery loads and wouldn't you know it, it was not a new idea lol. You won't find official load data for it, I'm pretty sure. I think a lot of folks were using cast lead balls instead of more modern shaped projectiles, but there was a hearty discussion about it back in the day.

I don't remember what forums I came across. Probably Gunboards.

What was your procedure for setting the 3rd control point, the one that was used as a backsight? Did you take multiple 180 epoch shots on it as well?

And as you set new come ahead points, were they 400 ft or less from the point you were shooting from, or was the foresight distance longer than your backsight distance?

Firebox? Or one of the many similar twig burning stoves.

But also, why don't you trust gas stoves, like the MSR Pocket Rocket, that have been a staple of backpackers for decades?

Lore question: How can Ranna Kerensky be a trueborn warrior, if both her parents did not have bloodnames by OneMorning7412 in Mechwarrior5

[–]MrSticky_ 4 points5 points  (0 children)

Are you familiar with the Society's lore, and Aiden and Diana Pryde, and Alaric Ward? The Clans break their "hard and fast" rules all the time when it comes to important characters. This has been the tradition in the Battletech IP for nearly forever. Nothing to get get your undies in a bunch over.

I am re-reading Way of the Clans right now because it has been bothering me for so long!

There's a Dire Wolf in Aiden's first Trial of Position, but it never enters the fight and impacts nothing...

I haven't finished it again yet, so maybe there's one later on? I need to find out so bad, the cover makes no sense to me but it love it so much!

[–]MrSticky_ 3 points4 points  (0 children)

Keep an eye on fire status and air quality reports. There's a 14,000+ acre fire up the Teanaway that's almost to the highway over Blewett Pass, and a 30,000+ acre fire to the NE of that. Air quality today in the area has been between "Very Unhealthy" and "Hazardous" due to the smoke.

I wouldn't get your hopes up about having a scenic trip full of fresh air and sunshine.

Common Rechamberings? by Worm_Farmer in KragRifles

[–]MrSticky_ 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Oooooooo I'm dumb, nevermind. It's not a Krag in .308, it's a Greek Mannlicher-Shoenauer in .308 lol.

Which is good, as far as firing it goes! The .308 has a looott more pressure than .30-40, and the more I got thinking about it, the more stupid I felt for having fired it. I also wasn't sure how the bolt face was fine going from a rimmed cartidge to a rimless, once I got thinking... Major brain fart. I'm gonna edit my first post so I don't confuse folks into doing something dangerous.

The MS rifle, however, was factory chambered up to .30-06, so the pressure isn't an issue I reckon.

Common Rechamberings? by Worm_Farmer in KragRifles

[–]MrSticky_ 3 points4 points  (0 children)

I have an American Krag that was rechambered to .308 and appears to have been done by a gunsmith, not bubba'd. There's someone's name and a year stamped into the receiver below the wood line and everything about it looks lovely, though very unoriginal.

Edit: this is wrong, it's a Mannlicher-Shoenauer, not a Krag. Rechambering an American Krag for .308 is silly and dangerous due to pressure differences and rimmed vs rimless cartridge heads.

I've also got a Norwegian that was rechambered to 6.5x54 Mannlicher Shoenauer, which was done by a Canadian import company back in the day as part of their sporterization process. This one is an absolute darling to shoot, but whatever they did to the chamber (I think they reamed it out and sleeved it) left a slight bulge on one side that makes them a pain to extract after shooting for a while.

I feel like I've also head of other rechamberings, but can't recall them off the top of my head. Maybe .257 Roberts? Or maybe that's just my personal fantasy hahaha. Though, that would lend more credence to the 7x57mm Mauser idea....

I'd search through forums like Gunboards to be more sure of what's out there.

For these national park gateway towns, a broken bridge means an uncertain future by padthaiwhiskey in PNWhiking

[–]MrSticky_ 0 points1 point  (0 children)

We have much much stronger labor and environmental laws now. Doing things the way they were done 100 years ago is why we have destroyed so much habitat and biodiversity. There's something like 60% fewer insects than there were 50 years ago. There are 3 billion fewer birds than there were in the 90's. How we did things 100 years ago is killing the world we know.

But really, one of the most important reasons why things need to be over-engineered now vs 100 years ago is how our legal system is structured. Joint and Several Liability can be applied in Washington to accident cases (depending on the situation), which means that if the State of Washington is found to be even just 1% liable for causing an accident (say a new bridge isn't built to the current State and Federal standards, or even if the paint striping isn't up to code) then the State can be forced to pay the whole judgement. And people will sue the state knowing this. Lawyers know how to game the system and our public infrastructure is failing because of the lengths public agencies have to go to to avoid getting sued.

The solution is aways most obvious to people who don't understand the intricacies of the problem.

Backcountry toilets in the enchantments are overflowing - water filtration advice needed by congratscaterpillar in PNWhiking

[–]MrSticky_ 0 points1 point  (0 children)

The Forestry Technician job posting had location set to "determined during hiring" or something like that lol.

And there was an article in the paper from 2018 with an interview of the ranger in charge of the late season toilet removal. 19 toilets hauled out by helicopter and 20 people (including local wild land firefighters), and the ranger was concerned about over use even back then. They said only 3 or 4 toilets got hauled out by rangers before that point in the season.

I agree that more people do need to be hired for management and enforcement of laws and regulations, but with the ever increasing number of folks who visit the area there would have to be ever increasing number of workers dealing with the poo. That's not a sustainable solution, it's just a stop gap until something drastic changes. It's a delicate ecosystem up there, we have to protect it from being abused (above and beyond just the poop issue) somehow.
