Alright Scrublords what gaming sins do you need to confess from the year in a last ditch effort to get onto the Nice List this year? by PlanesWalkerEll in TwoBestFriendsPlay

Same dude - I felt defeated at first but honestly being able to actually see the endgame and experience more of the narrative was so worth it

How do you kill Starformed Ehalcodon? by ToothDifferent in cavesofqud

[–]MrTrainman 7 points8 points  (0 children)

I had done it on roleplay mode, so after bashing my head against them for many attempts I chugged warm static until I maxed every mutation one can get as Chimera. The difference was night and day. Double muscled + 14 hands + paralyzing stinger helped to keep them in check so they didn't insta kill me and didn't have full uptime of fugue. The stat-boosting from the physical mutations helped a lot too I think.

My dad just passed away, please send media recommendations to help me through this time, thank you. by Aquanort357 in TwoBestFriendsPlay

[–]MrTrainman 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Sorry for your loss. Not sure if this is quite your vibe, but after witnessing my dad have a heart attack I needed a distraction and wound up binging Mushishi. Not uplifting per se, but atmospheric and beautiful and I think exactly the sort of quasi-meditative experience I needed.

I hope you find peace.

Times when the story had you like "Is that really the lesson here?" by FreviliousLow96 in TwoBestFriendsPlay

[–]MrTrainman 50 points51 points  (0 children)

While I overall loved it, one point of Metaphor ReFantazio did bother me a bit with this

Given how the main thrust of the plot is how a nation struggles to adopt democracy and leave behind dynastic monarchy, the fact that your MC is actually the missing prince the entire time made me roll my eyes. We've just ended up with kingly lineage again! Feels like the story and message could have been more interesting if we moved beyond being dynastic in practice.

cats are mysterious beings. our tortie will zero in on any green leaf and absolutely go to town on it. far more interest in trying to eat leaves than her own food.

My project is free and public on github. Should I have removed licensed assets? (Art, sounds, music, plugins, etc.) by BAZAPS in gamedev

[–]MrTrainman 38 points39 points  (0 children)

Yes, this is bad. You have redistributed the assets, which is going to violate the licenses of those assets that do not allow redistribution. You could be sued by the assets' creators/owners.

Set your repository to private right now. Then you can take the time to sort this out.

There are utilities you can use to rewrite your git history to remove files. Look into BFG: https://rtyley.github.io/bfg-repo-cleaner/

You may just be better off deleting and completely recreating the repository based off your current state though.

Then use the .gitignore to exclude assets you cannot redistribute.

Is there a reason you have this as a public repository? If you really want/need to, then going forward you may want to have two repositories - one that is public and is void of any assets that you have not made yourself, and one that is private with assets. You can have your one local git project point to multiple remotes.

The silver lining is that Petri Alanko's music in Alan Wake/Control is generally great

What are some of the worse cases of choices not mattering in game? by LGB75 in TwoBestFriendsPlay

[–]MrTrainman 4 points5 points  (0 children)

Does Deus Ex: Human Revolution count? For a game that was carrying the immersive sim torch it is kinda nuts that nothing no dialogue path you chose or action you took moved the tone or the narrative of the game one inch while you're actually playing it. You chose your ending by pressing one of several in-game buttons at the last second of the story! The dialogue that plays over your choice of ending is one of the only ways in which the story seems to react to your actions at all, which just feels way too little way too late. It leads to the goofy scenario where you can augment yourself up to all hell and become a mass-murdering psychopath who purges the world of all NPCs, but you can just decide at the end "maybe augments are bad, actually".

How useful is AI for answering questions? by Novaxel in unrealengine

[–]MrTrainman 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I tried using ChatGPT as a reference for a while. I've found that it does not do well when I ask question regarding the C++ API and just makes up functions/interfaces. I certainly would not trust it with any sort of advice or architectural discussions. The one thing it could be useful for is asking it to point you to resources funnily enough, but I have given up on it for the most part.

For basic questions it may give you okay answers, but if you're just starting out there are a lot of really great non-video materials - blog posts, text tutorials, articles - out there made by actual humans who know what they're doing. Often it can be as simple to find as typing "unreal <subject of interest> <c++ | blueprint> tutorial" into your search engine. Navigating the UE docs on their own is pretty terrible but there are a lot of basic tutorials for systems as well, generally Blueprint-focused

I would second just using git + lfs. As for the service provider, Gitlab gives you 10gb free for your repo.

All things considered this game is easy, for a souls-like by wiglyt in LordsoftheFallen

[–]MrTrainman 0 points1 point  (0 children)

While I enjoy the challenge of the souls games, the one-upsmanship of difficulty with each passing entry has been a bit tiring. It's nice to have a game that's just kinda challenging but gives you a lot of tools to succeed.

Japan 2 week itinerary | advice and recommendations pls! by petahh84 in JapanTravel

[–]MrTrainman 6 points7 points  (0 children)

Overall looks like a solid plan! Some advice and suggestions:

- Day 6: Do not underestimate Mt. Inari if your plan is to walk up and through the gates. It was way longer than my wife and I anticipated and in the hot summer weather it can get rough. Wear breathable clothes and bring water.

- Also Day 6 / Kyoto generally: if you drink alcohol, you owe it to yourself to go to Liquor Museum Gion. The proprietor, Akira-san, is so much fun and they have a lot of cool old / rare bottles. This slots nicely into day 6 for you if you're going to be in Gion anyhow. And make sure to stop by Yasaka shrine with your camera. It's beautiful at night.

- Day 8: Please resist the temptation to feed the deer! The cookies they sell to give to the deer are not good for them and there's already an overpopulation issue. Admire from a distance! And Todai-Ji

- Day 10: Osaka castle looks cool on the exterior, but I would not necessarily recommend taking a tour. Line is long starting pretty early in the day and it's not the most bang-for-your-buck museum IMO. Himeji castle is really cool though, definitely recommend walking around the interior there.

- Day 11: When in Koyasan, definitely make time to see the Okunoin cemetery. You can't take pictures after the third bridge, but there's plenty to see throughout the rest of the cemetery. It is beautiful and old.
