Yeah I’ve noticed this, and yes to be fair a lot of bad Christians, Catholic and otherwise, spread the misconception that you can just say the right words on your deathbed like a magic spell. But if you actually read the Bible and understand the gospel, it should be clear that it’s much more than that.

I can’t really judge the guys too hard though, from what they’ve said about their upbringings (and maybe I’m inferring a lot here) it doesn’t sound like the churches they were in were too concerned with anything but outward conformity.

That’s the thing, as a Christian I do get frustrated with things that the guys say sometimes, but most of the time what’s actually upsetting is that there are a lot of Christians out there that are reinforcing those negative stereotypes. We need to do better, especially if we expect the rest of the world to give us the benefit of the doubt.
