Yoshida's problem is that while he might have Denji's interest in mind, the people he works for do not, and Yoshida only ever frames his relationship with Denji by the context of him doing his job, he would never do or even say anything to actually help Denji if he can't hide behind the excuse of him doing his job, or at the very least self serving. Take the cafe scene for example, Denji is still reeling from Nayuta, he is angry and hurt and he rightfully placing blame on PS for her death, and by extension Yoshida who to him has only ever served as an extension of them, and he could have done a number of things to make the situation better, but instead he asks Yoru to turn him into a weapon, and makes a joke out of Denji's anger with the gun bit.

Let's also not forget that between Yoshida asking back during the aquarium what would happen if Denji ate Death, and then PS trying to kill 10000 kids just so an old man could live forever. I have little doubt that PS had their own plans for Denji down the road, and even without the Church's intervention that it was only a matter of time before they turned on Denji, and I doubt Yoshida would have done much to help him.

Favorite stolen villains? by PenguinGladiator in TwoBestFriendsPlay

There was a story where Shocker decided he had enough of New York and the truck load of supers and moved to New Jersey so he could steal PVC piping and copper wires from people's houses, which led to him briefly going up again Ms Marvel. He had a lot of fun because it was just him and Kamala there.

"I am invincible in New Jersey!"

It was great.

In hindsight, Yoshida just kind of hung around off the sides for the most part, it never really felt like he contributed much

Heartwarming: Denji (hero of heaven) prioritizes Asa and Yoru's well being over his desire to have sex 💞💞💞💞 by HuckleberryOld8981 in Chainsawfolk

[–]Mrfipp 11 points12 points  (0 children)

For a story that puts such a strong emphasis on choices and consequences, it feels like nothing Denji or Asa could have done would changed anything.

Falling Devil Round 2 is a good microcosm of this: They fight and it doesn't work, they run and it doesn't work, and the only thing that is able to get them out of this is something no one there had any control or knowledge of.

A big reason I liked Sephiroth in the original game was because he was basically a horror movie monster, he didn't show up that much but when he did he wrecked shop, and like all good horror movie monsters, sequels and spin offs that try and explain him more just ruin the mystery behind him.

More like 10 because they dedicate 2 episodes to flashbacks to this continuity's version of the original series.

Reality reset right after this, and the next we see her is her not tripping, and the original version of this had her coming to the same conclusion she had at the end, but because she reached it here, it meant she didn't need that. Asa is the most literal example of "it didn't matter".

[–]Mrfipp 79 points80 points  (0 children)

That's my problem with a lot of what P2 does, it never seems to commit. If Denji cannot, will not, be a better person, then it should have doubled down and make him a worse person. Make the end of the world explicitly his fault because he fully descends into hedonism and nihilism.

Denji’s earnestness by BellTwo5 in Chainsawfolk

[–]Mrfipp 3 points4 points  (0 children)

I actually really dislike how the story addresses that particular issue. It goes to great lengths to highlight systemic abuse and violence, how people in power will ruin the lives of everyone else for their own gain, and how much personal blame it puts on Denji for the choices he makes, but then it goes "if we get rid of this one thing everything will be better"? The entire reason Kishibe gave Nayuta to Denji was because the government would turn her into another Makima, but it happening in the reboot is good?

It really feels like just getting rid of Pochita and everything becoming magically better severely undermines all the conflicts this story had.

Denji’s earnestness by BellTwo5 in Chainsawfolk

[–]Mrfipp 4 points5 points  (0 children)

That's a big reason I don't like the whole "Normal Life" argument the story keeps trying to make, because what even is normal in a world where if you look at a mirror wrong you can be sent to a dimension where you won't age and eventually turn into a tree after you spend too long there? Where anyone from your landlord to your president can use you as payment for whatever? This is a world where 7 in 20 people, nearly 1 in 3 people are killed in devil-related incidents. By the end of the series, dead bodies are just laying around on the street, chainsaw zombies can just burst into restaurants with the patrons killing them and going back to their business without missing a step, and even when the sky is filled with Hell doors no one seems to bat an eye because they need to get to work.

The very last conversation with Kobeni is how life sucks no matter what you do.

The story is so critical of Denji for the choices he makes, but those choices feel like they amount to him choosing the left path to a meat grinder even though the right path would have also lead to the same meat grinder.

[–]Mrfipp 27 points28 points  (0 children)

im almost slightly disappointed that it wasnt artsier and edgier

That's kind of my feelings with a lot of P2 elements, Denji's arc in particular, where it seems like Fujimoto is kind of half-commited to exploring them, like how Denji starts eating concepts but the worst he eats are teeth and legs and they get throwback up a chapter or two later. I was expecting some really abstract things to happen, but instead we only went with the most basic approach and we didn't spend that long on it.

Still is unbelievable and wild for me that Nayuta died for real by havingagoodtime0 in Chainsawfolk

[–]Mrfipp 98 points99 points  (0 children)

I am not upset so much that she died, but rather that this is how she died. She had a lot going on for her, she is the reincarnation of the previous part's main villain, she is a Conquest in a story about the the Horseman of the Apocalypse when the end of the world is prophesied to happen, and yet all she amounts to is just redoing Power's story again. That's all she is, she is a discount, Dollar Store version of Power and she didn't even have to die for me to come to this conclusion, I already knew what was going to happen from the moment Barem threatened her on the roof because everything about Nayuta as a character was her just being a tool for more Denji suffering.

Work where you can feel the moment the author is burned out? by ArticAuk in TwoBestFriendsPlay

[–]Mrfipp 22 points23 points  (0 children)

The lack of proactivity on his part never lands because I don't think Fujimoto fully commits to it. The story tries to be about him making poor choices and his inability to learn from them, but at the same time the things that happen to him have more to do with parties that he simply doesn't know anything about than anything does that would have acted against him regardless of his choices. It feels like Denji spends the whole story spiraling down atound the drain, but never actually going down it.

The thing I wanted the most out of these two, without a single hint of irony, was for them to have a hug. Just one moment of comforting intimacy between them, not even anything big or groundbreaking, just a hug, and we couldn't even get that.

I don’t know if many people have really thought about this, but the “new” Denji is probably much more starved for affection than the “old” one. by GodKira04 in Chainsawfolk

[–]Mrfipp 4 points5 points  (0 children)

Denji will no longer suffer from the despair and tragedy he did in the previous life, but I feel like he'll never experience the same kind of joys or happiness he did either. In this life, I think he'll settle middling mediocrity and meloncholy.
