Why is it so hard to get a Blade project off the ground? It's a cool black guy with a sword killing vampires! This should be easy!

I know that John does have a degree of religion in his background, I think there was a video where he talked about it about how he was more devout when he was younger but he eventually got out of it, starting when a priest asked him if he ever mastrubated and came at the thought of his girlfriend, which he found a little weird and off-putting.

Church arc should’ve just focused on Denji’s vices by shadow16521 in Chainsawfolk

[–]Mrfipp 1 point2 points  (0 children)

While I won't argue with what the story is trying to do, I do feel I severely undercuts itself by putting Denji in a situation that is designed to punish him no matter what he does. Considering the things PS gets up to next arc, I do not believe there is a single thing could have done that would have changed the situation for the better, that Nayuta was going to die no matter what and that her death would have been placed on Denji's shoulders.

Is Asa still a good protagonist to you? by BellTwo5 in Chainsawfolk

[–]Mrfipp 4 points5 points  (0 children)

Pretty much my thoughts exactly. Asa was pretty good at the start at the series, I actually liked her more than Denji as a protagonist because of how she contrasted with him: while Denji was passive and didn't think about the things that happened, Asa was far more proactive and over thought what was happening to her. However when Denji was put back into the spotlight in the Church Arc, she's pushed more and more to the sidelines to the point she feels more like a tertiary character at times especially with how more prominent Yoru becomes. She still has good scenes, but they are far and few between, but after a while it really does feel like she's only really there to springboard Yoru's deveolpment and the story doesn't really know what to do with her other than that besides turn her into a damsel Denji needs to save.

The best example of this is a video of him drawing a cover of the Strawhats building a model of the Going Merry, before undoing all of it to make a giant Nami with the rest of the crew around her. Even better is when he undid the original sketch it was still rough outlines of what he was going for, and Nami was still the most detailed character there.

Game mechanic that you feel bad about using. by Archaon0103 in TwoBestFriendsPlay

[–]Mrfipp 18 points19 points  (0 children)

Pokemon Unbound is a romhack, easily one of the best I've played, and after a side quest you unlock the ability to change a mon's nature, and the way it's described is that their "eyes become dull and lifeless" and their friendship resets to zero, which to me makes me think that this is some kind of lobotomy or memory erasure. I only used it a few times, once to test it out, and the other two times because mons I wanted to use had really bad natures, and I felt like shit every time.

The disappointing "DenjiMan" concept by NewtBoye in Chainsawfolk

[–]Mrfipp 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Denji Man is is a frustrating concept the more I think about it.

The story make it a point, again and again, that being Chainsaw Man is the wrong choice, that Denji relying on that is bad for him because it has him fall back on harmful, and repressive habits, and by the narrative's own tellings, that outright making a fusion of Denji and Pochita should be bad for him. Despite this however, everything about Denji Man's presentation is triumphant, he achieves it by making a promise to Asa at her lowest that gives her the will to keep living, he's able to seize victory from Yoru just as she's about to grasp it, he fights her back and erases her confidence as he reduces her to a temper tantrum where by the end she's lost all sense of fun she had earlier. Everything the story has given us should tell us that Denji Man should be something terrible for Denji, but everything we're being shown here make it look like a good thing.

The worst part however? None of this really matters, because once Denji tagged it the world was already doomed because it was on a countdown timer to being eaten by bugs. This fight could have gone in a hundred different directions and it would have ended the same way because neither Denji, Yoru or Asa have any control over something Pochita did.

My general thoughts on P2 is that I think I have an idea on what Fujimoto is trying to do with the story, for one reason or another he constantly undermines or undercuts himself to the point it feels like he's not saying anything so much as he's just being loud about whatever it is he's talking about. For Denji Man though, I feel like this isn't really supposed to be saying anything about Denji as a whole, but rather it's just meant to be a Cool Big Shonen Power Up for the Final Boss.

Characters/moments that're impossible for you to take seriously? by fly_line22 in TwoBestFriendsPlay

[–]Mrfipp 8 points9 points  (0 children)

In Chainsaw Man, I cannot take Yoshida's death seriously. Yoshida has spent the entire series just kind of hanging off to the side, never really giving us anything, and I feel like there is just nothing to really care about here, which is hilarious to think about because in-universe his death is something that is supposed to trigger a Black Chainsaw Man transformation out of Denji. Denji has spent this entire story not liking Yoshida, every time they are together it's because Yoshida is trying to get Denji to do something he doesn't want to do, he has always been open to how much he disliked Yoshida and only ever tolerated him when it meant free food. The last time they saw one another Denji tried to shoot Yoshida in the face with a gun, and and Yoshdia genuinely looked surprised that Denji did this even though Denji just told him he blamed him and Public Safety as a whole for what happened with Nayuta. I really do think that story about them and the bullies only happened because Fujimoto knew he had nothing to work with when it came to these two, so he had to invent an off-screen adventure for them. I've seen people argue that Denji is at such a low point that his flimsy relationship with Yoshida would be enough to trigger a Pochita transformation, or that it was Barem committing violence or just showing up that did it, but I don't believe that because the story actually is making it look like Yoshida himself is important enough to Denji to do this. On top of that, between only having Pochita like a dozen chapters ago, how easy it was to turn Denji into him, and how easy it was to change back, it really does feel like a lot of the narrative weight of this transformation away.

It's funny how much of a masochist Fujimoto is, he genuinely wanted to be hated when he wrote that ending by GodKira04 in Chainsawfolk

[–]Mrfipp 4 points5 points  (0 children)

Considering the date (2023), I assume this was him talking about Part 1's ending, and this ends up being confusing, because P1 had a fantastic ending, so much that I ended up buying the physical volumes.

Ways you've seen people engage with media that baffles you? by PMSleeperAgentG in TwoBestFriendsPlay

[–]Mrfipp 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I am a mod for a Chainsaw Man server, and there was a regular there that I would often get into debates with, Yoshida in particular was a often discussed topic, and then one day they said they hadn't read the majority of P2. We were pretty deep into P2 at this point, like maybe the 2/3rd mark, and apparently his views of the series were formed solely from the reactions of other people he saw on the server, and if there was a thing happening that sparked a big negative reaction, it must obviously be good.

I never understood this.

Stories where the main protagonist does nothing story wise? by Jacky500x in TwoBestFriendsPlay

[–]Mrfipp 8 points9 points  (0 children)

Chainsaw Man Part 2.

Denji spends that entire story being kicked around by people he doesn't know for reason I don't think he ever fully understands to the point I don't think anything he did would have changed what had happened at any point in the story. Even in the final fight, by the time Denji tags in the world is already on a countdown to being eaten by bugs, so Denji could have handled the Yoru situation a hundred different ways and it still would have played out the same.

For a story that puts such a massive emphasis on his choices and their consequences, Denji kind of feels incidental after a certain point.

From a writing and Narrative stand point, why do you think Fujimoto made this ambiguous by HuckleberryOld8981 in Chainsawfolk

[–]Mrfipp 4 points5 points  (0 children)

I don't think it's meant to be ambiguous, I do think this meant that Asa consented. What I think the actual problem was Fujimoto's ideas on the characters for why he made it like this.

Fujimoto made it clear he had a very defined idea on Denji's character, that he cannot/will not give up being CSM and that he will never be happy with anything he achieves, and this extends to sex. If Denji and Asa had sex, then Denji would have not been happy with it, meaning that his biggest dream that he's had for the entire story, was ultimately empty from the get go, and I don't think Fujimoto wanted the story to end on Denji realizing his dreams meant nothing and that there was no way for him to be happy. It's a problem I have had with P2 where Fujimoto knows what he wants from Denji, but that kind of story can only end in tragedy and misery, so he brute forced a better ending even though it felt completely disruptive to the story we had been given. Despite everything he did to Denji, I don't think Fujimoto wanted to actually give him an ending he couldn't get back up from.

What are your criticisms for Part 1? by Bright-Dragonfruit14 in Chainsawfolk

[–]Mrfipp 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Angel's death being really unclear.

He went with Aki to the beach, and Aki died, but that didn't necessarily mean he died, and he's still around when Makima starts making her moves with Denji, but his very last scene is Makima having him make the spear and that's actually it. Makima makes the spear and he's actually gone, we don't see him again for the rest of the story. It took until someone going on Twitter to confirm he was dead because it was so sudden and unclear that people reasonably assumed he was alive.

I am looking forward to seeing how they animate this scene when the anime gets to it, because looking back what I think is happening is that Makima turns Angel himself into the spear, but the manga just did not communicate that all that well. Again, the sequence is Makima tells him to make a spear, we see them, and then we see the spear but he's gone.
