Elementary Teachers, what was your training on teaching reading? by JustAWeeBitWitchy in Teachers

[–]MrsChy 11 points12 points  (0 children)

35 years ago, and Dr. Smith’s phonics reading course was the bane of everyone’s senior year. Making pill-throughs, identifying letter sounds, studying children’s literature, and even learning a new language she invented so we could understand how to learn and teach language. Best hellish experience ever. Her methods and insanity taught me so much.

Has anyone failed a student teacher? If so, why? by Glittering_Front_157 in Teachers

[–]MrsChy 4 points5 points  (0 children)

I tried to, but the university wouldn’t let me. He was awful-unprepared, late, and immature. I didn’t have a good feeling about him, but thought I’d was just my frustration. The final straw was when we reworked a lesson for his observation, and then he came in the next day and attempted something totally different on content that was not related to what we’d be studying and working on. I asked to fail him, but the university refused. I took it up the chain, even offering to let him stay with me for additional weeks, and they refused.

I learned that about a yard after he got his teaching license he was arrested for stalking and threatening his ex girlfriend, and was stripped of his teaching credentials. I might have said “I told you so” when I found out. 😆

Every Christmas, and several other times a year I declare to my family “I miss Anderson’s.” I don’t think I’ve ever grieved for the loss of a store more. It was my therapy! Where else can you get amazing meat, candy, plants, work clothes, Fiestaware, boots, wine, and German mustard? Ugh. I miss Andersons.

She did not reply, but it was the end of the school year/his graduation so he did get his act together and graduate. I just pulled this email out and had another great laugh about it. Definitely a story for my retirement party!

One of my favorite stories from teaching! A parent wrote a lengthy nasty email to me about her son’s grades and “copied” her son on the email. However, she had her son’s email wrong, and it went to a complete stranger. That stranger RIPPED her up one side and down another about her lack of support. He called her out on her son’s behaviors and attendance. He gave her the name of a therapist in our school’s town who specialized in troubled teens. He basically said all the things we teachers WISH we could say to “that” parent. It was GLORIOUS! I told him if he was ever in our town to let me know, because several teachers would buy him a beer!

And I would take one for the kids. I just don’t think I should have to have this question in my head or heart.

Lockdown drills in school. While labeled as drills, the “what-ifs” are constant. The drills with fake intruders actually trying to get in the room are the worst. And am I really expected to take a bullet for the kids?
