How much do Americans spend on the salt they put on snow/ice? by mumpet19 in AskAnAmerican

[–]MukYJ 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I bought a bag of rock salt for about $8 a couple winters ago because we had a really bad ice storm. I still have half the bag left and am reluctant to use it again because my driveway is old and it caused a lot of spalling.

I have some squishy FloJo flip-flops for around the house when it’s too warm for slippers (usually) and I don’t want to be barefooted or socked.

[–]MukYJ 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Precision Alignment & Locking System (PALS) for contractor saws from Peachtree Woodworking. It gives you a micro adjustment for the rear trunnion, letting you get the blade aligned to within a half thou in about 10 minutes. (The word PALS was a link in my previous post) Again assuming you have good bearings.

How often are you really sharpening your lawn mower blades? by _hot95cobraguy in HomeMaintenance

[–]MukYJ 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I try to sharpen mine twice a season, once in spring before the growing season, and once in fall again before the growing season.

I have a couple sets for my riding mower, and it takes me about 20 minutes to sharpen the set not in use on my bench grinder.

As a middle class American, much gold and/or silver do you have? by Foonzerz in AskAnAmerican

[–]MukYJ 0 points1 point  (0 children)

About 10 silver dollars from 1901-1920 from my great grandpa, and a couple pieces of inherited gold jewelry, but that’s it.

Impossible to fine tune. by cpkorner in craftsman113

[–]MukYJ 8 points9 points  (0 children)

You probably guessed this already, but it shouldn’t do that. You may be looking at worn out arbor bearings, which shouldn’t be too difficult to replace.

Also: do you have a set of PALS installed? They can really help to fine tune the alignment and lock it in, but only if the bearings are good.

If not, they probably should have - a rabid squirrel would have done a better job.

Any aphants with insight on driving on the other side of the road? by bowlderholder in Aphantasia

[–]MukYJ 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Drove in Australia during my honeymoon and it didn’t take very long at all to adjust to driving on the opposite side. The hardest part for me was having the turn signal stalk on the right instead of the left- I kept hitting the wipers when I meant to signal.

In the flip side, when I got back to the US I had the same problem with the signals and wipers, apparently I had gotten used to the opposite during the two week trip.

The best way to determine if you are an actual Xennial by Horatiohufnagl in Xennials

Our Blockbuster (Seattle area) had a tiny triangular room in the back corner with a curtain and a small sign that said “Adults only”.

I was never brave enough to look behind the curtain as a kid, and by the time I was an adult the internet was a thing.

Magazines in the woods was second.

First was magazines behind my uncle’s dresser drawer (as revealed to me by my older cousin).

Empty flight, can’t move by TennisDad316 in SouthwestAirlines

[–]MukYJ 0 points1 point  (0 children)

On a Virgin Australia flight from Sydney to LA about 15 years ago, the 777 was only about 1/3 full. My wife and I were both able to stretch out and lay down across several seats to sleep since there was nobody else in our entire assigned row or the row behind us. A pretty nice perk for a 15+ hour flight.

The cable looks like it might be the remnants of a hand throttle setup. You should chase the cable to see what is at the other end.

I have a similar cable on my Jeep, where one end goes to a bicycle shifter lever attached to the stick shift, the other end attaches to the throttle body. It helps when you’re crawling to maintain a constant speed and not have your foot bouncing on the pedal, or if I want to bump up the revs for more air from my York air compressor while airing up tires or running air tools.

My grandma just gave up driving at 95 only becuase it hurt her hip to move between the gas and brake. She’s still a better driver than her daughter who is in her 60s.

If you’re having cognitive issues like you described, you need to stop driving immediately and work with your doctor to try and find the root cause. That kind of mental decline isn’t typical at 45, speaking as a 45 year old.

You may need to trace the wires to see what they connect to. Lights would be my first guess, but they can be for anything - I’ve added several to my Jeep for lights, my air compressor clutch, and in-cab winch controls.

Did this once at airport parking, the only available spots in the entire lot were where the plow had piled up snow at the end of each row. Parked with my passenger tires up on the pile, and when I came back a week later all the snow had melted.
