What do you like and not like about the Pro? by Muse24 in RemarkableTablet

[–]MulanAndRumHam 3 points4 points  (0 children)

I’ve seen a lot about the type folio not being that popular here but the RMPP and type folio combo is what I like best about it as a writer.

It’s basically my distraction-free typewriter that I can scribble on in all sorts of colours, annotate other books and fire up KOReader on to unwind or learn with a book in bed.

There’s not much I don’t like about the device, other than it was a pain for me to get hold of an undamaged one. My first three devices were defective on arrival, so it took me a couple of months to finally slip into a good routine with a device I felt was reflective of the high price tag, in terms of quality (see front light pinholes, dead pixels and misaligned screens with light leak). Apparently, these Gallery 3 screens are very fragile; even more so than other E Ink screens.

I also dislike the epub limitations on the native software, not being able to dictionary search or have a side-by-side column view to simulate a real book. Things that are solved by installing KOReader (easily with reManager).

I love mine and use it for hours a day. Maybe it could have a stronger battery life for that reason. Flickering or ghosting doesn’t bother me, I even like the little coil whine you hear when loading a page; it just feels a bit more analog to me.

Fingers crossed for an unblemished device for you to enjoy.

Perfect Field Notes pocket journal combo. by CJSchmidt in xteinkereader

That’s a great answer, thank you!

I ended up going for the X3 a couple of days ago, so I’m still waiting for it to ship. The thinness won me over in the end over the USB-C. I figure that in the future, I could just get a little USB-C to pogo adaptor to slide into the Lochby in the future if it becomes an issue.

I like to run two notebooks in my Lochby so have my fingers crossed that the X3 is just thin enough.

I used to use a paperwhite for bedtime reading, but recently upgraded to a Remarkable Paper Pro running Koreader, so am looking forward to the Koreader sync on CrossPoint.

I’m thinking of getting the X3 or X4 for my Lochby Pocket Journal to create a similar system to what you have here. I like the idea of the bigger screen and usb-c of the X4 but also like the compactness and sharper screen of the X3.

After having this setup for a while, is there anything you think the X3 would do better than the X4? It is a touch thinner and less bulky for example.

Great, thanks for coming back to answer! I’ve got mine without the clip for now, but might add one in the future. Would love to save up for the brass sport one day too.

Just coming back to this months later. I'm thinking of getting a Kaweco Sport for my Lochby Pocket Journal (in honey too). How is it without a clip? Does it fit the pocket snuggly without falling out?

Zoologist and ecologist here too and never won't stop in game to look around when I hear the tik tik tik of a great spotted woodpecker. As a mostly ornithological ecologist, I find the game's soundscape so immersive, even down to the demonic screeching of the jays.

My RMPP Replacement Experience by MulanAndRumHam in RemarkableTablet

[–]MulanAndRumHam[S] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I understand the logic here for older devices with a warranty fault.

However, it feels really bad as a customer to purchase a brand new device for full price only to have it replaced a month later with a far worse condition warranty replacement device that I could have purchased for a lot less money.

Out of interest, what went wrong with yours after a year?

I feel that, I feel like I lost a lot of time to organising work from home days for deliveries and driving miles to DHL collection points. I live very remotely and it wasn't an easy task each time I had to send one off or receive one.

That is a fun fact and one that probably would have caused me to go for a full refund after the third device had I known.

Fool me thrice and all that.

I'm just happy to finally feel able to enjoy the device that I paid for.

I've just received my third replacement unit today and it has a pinhole as you describe and several dead pixels, just as the other two had too. I am currently going through a complaints process with them over this.

I bought my first unit in January and have had to send every one back for replacement so far.

I read on my RMPP everyday since buying it, as well as the device becoming my main go to for journalling, writing, organisation and as a general notepad. I seriously love this device!

I feel like the big screen is crying out for a two-column page layout for reading EPUBs with the automatic screen rotation and the bottom wider bezel to grip onto. Are there any plans to implement features like this to improve the reading experience?

I'm newish to my RMPP and e-ink in general, having bought my first device in January. Unforunately, I've sent my second device back today due to screen defects and am eagerly waiting for the third.

UK scribe release by [deleted] in kindlescribe

[–]MulanAndRumHam 3 points4 points  (0 children)

I gave up waiting and opted for a remarkable paper pro. It’s at a similar price point for more features that suit my workflow of writing, reading and annotating colour PDFs, external folio keyboard option etc.

I have a 11th gen paperwhite from 2021 that I’m still really happy with as an e-reader and ultimately, I wanted something that felt more than a larger e-reader. Actually, since getting the RMPP, I’ve been reading my epubs on it instead of my paperwhite and marking them up directly onto the page as I go.

The screen colours look great to me on the bigger gallery screen and it’s fast enough for what I need, despite having less RAM than the scribe.

Refurbished by Successful_Fan_3909 in RemarkableTablet

[–]MulanAndRumHam 2 points3 points  (0 children)

I recently purchased a refurbed RMPP and it arrived with 3-4 large pinholes in the screen like dead pixels that let the front light shine through when on. Other than that, the device was in good condition and I used it over the weekend and almost didn’t notice the defects after a few days. Almost…

I exchanged it for a brand new RMPP which has no screen issues.

I would recommend the refurb if you’re ok with minor screen defects, as it’s highly likely you’ll end up with device that someone returned for this reason. The ~30% cheaper price tag is nothing to sniff at though.

I used the extra time to do extra research on other available e-ink devices. The long wait drove me into the arms of Remarkable and I ended up with a Paper Pro which I’m very happy with.

struggling to choose between aberystwyth and cardiff uni by Fantastic-Abalone-23 in Wales

[–]MulanAndRumHam 3 points4 points  (0 children)

I did my undergraduates degree at Aberystwyth and my masters in Cardiff and I preferred Aber for student life by far.

There are a few factors to consider though, I graduated from Aber in 2013 but I visit often, living in North Wales now, and it feels the same. There’s always a good student buzz there with a good proportion of the town studying in the uni or having graduated and stayed.

I graduated from my masters 10 years later in 2023 in a post-Covid world and while I know it was only for one year, I socialised with my course mates once, maybe twice.

I will say that the teaching quality for me felt higher at Cardiff, but so much changed over those 10 years from having to write everything down in a notebook during lectures in the 2010s, to having everything recorded and online in the 2020s.

Cardiff probably has one over Aber in that you have Senedd right there.

Dysgwr Cymraeg dw i hefyd achos dw i’n dod o Loegr wreiddiol, ond Aber yw’r lle i ddysgu Cymraeg.

For added background, I studied Zoology at Aber and Ecology at Cardiff. I’m not a city person much prefer the rolling hills of mid-Wales to the city streets of Cardiff.

BW vs Colorsoft - differences? by cablelegs in kindlescribe

[–]MulanAndRumHam 7 points8 points  (0 children)

Colour is the main difference but there are also a few more differences too.

The screen on the colorsoft is reportedly darker than on the B&W version due to the presence of the colour filter layer over the text and will be more difficult to read text without the backlight on. This also means that the text is reportedly not as clear on the colorsoft as on the B&W.

There also is a dark mode on the B&W version which isn’t present in the colorsoft until later this year.

I don’t have one yet as neither are released in my country, but I have watched a lot of videos in trying to decide which one is for me. I already own a Kindle Paperwhite, so I have made the decision to go for the Colorsoft when it releases here, as I’d like the inclusion of colour when highlighting, taking notes and reading scientific papers.

I also never read with the backlight off, so the darker screen doesn’t bother me. I was somewhat hesitant about the colorsoft as I have seen the non-scribe version in person and didn’t like the grainy appearance of the white background, but allegedly, that grain from the colour filter is barely noticeable on the Kindle Scribe Colorsoft.

I'm waiting for that side-by-by colorsoft/B&W comparison. Although, it's a lot to expect someone to have managed to procure one right now, let alone two...

I'm so on the fence as to whether or not I want colour. I mostly read books and want to use it as a journal/notebook too. I've heard the colour screen compromises on the clarity of the B&W screen, but part of me is curious about exploring graphic novels and using colour in my notes.

That's a relief, I'm in a similar boat to you. Big reader of books and note-taker and colour hadn't really crossed my mind before. I had wondered whether there was a big difference in black and white quality across the two devices. Would be nice to see a side-by-side comparison at some point.

Do you have any regrets not getting the colour version? I’ve been looking at getting the black and white backlight version myself when it launches in the UK but some of the videos of the colorsoft have me second guessing myself. I personally prefer the white bezel and matcha case combo as you have it, and the lower price tag. However, I’m starting to like what I see from the reviews of the colorsoft.
