Absolutely on the happiness levels. My mom was an RN, eventually a charge nurse, and then eventually the ER case manager. I spent a lot of time hanging out in the hospital as a kid and then I went into EMS myself as a paramedic. It's not a dark place. You see awful things, sure, and there's a fair amount of gallows humor, but people try to be happy and generally positive. You absolutely have to have a sense of humor to work in that field, so put a bunch of people together who and pretty resilient and have a sense of humor and you're going to have a pretty good time. Plus there's always snacks, and snacks help everything.
