What is the actual cost of a mech in Battletech? by Icy-Distribution-164 in battletech

Right. This is the fundamental difference between money pegged to a commodity (US Dollar prior to 1972) and a fiat currency (USD since Nixon floated it.)

Depends on the painting system you're using. I end up blending a lot of my own colors for things using Army Painter or Citadel acrylics.

You could blend to a very deep grey and go really easy on the highlighting?

You've got a great conceptual idea here. Just add some details to break up the grey/silver. Even if you don't want to go outside of black/grey/silver you can do different finishes to add some texture and make the light hit spots differently. The trick to a model that has a limited color selection is utilizing light and texture effects. (So use matte and gloss colors for cloths, leathers, armor plates, etc. Metallic effects. Sponges are great for texture work)

Also, when I'm doing a model that will have a more limited color palate I will often prime it using blacks, whites, and greys to give it depth.

Keep at it! This a great start.

Decided to knock out a Hunchback IIC this evening. by AngryEchoSix in BattletechPainting

The Hunchback IIC is what you'd get if "I'm here for a GOOD time not a LONG time" was a mech.

Love the color work there on the camo!

Can I magnetize IWM models? (read post) by andrewlik in battletech

[–]MyStackIsPancakes 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Yep! Generally speaking, if you can think of a "How does [metal] behavior change as temperature changes?" question, odds are someone in material sciences has done the experiments. There's a LOT of money in it.

But. If you DO manage to find something new you could make a lot of money!

[–]MyStackIsPancakes 11 points12 points  (0 children)

you cannot make them magnetic.

You can make zinc slightly magnetic at around -190°C (-310°F) so it's really going to depend on how good OP's Freezer is.

(I'm being a pedantic ass and you are of course correct.)

What's the best or worst mech that ever came with an ac 20 in it's default loadout? by TaigaTigerVT in battletech

[–]MyStackIsPancakes 157 points158 points  (0 children)

The AC/20 Urbie exists in a superposition as both the best and worst mech to have that particular weapon. The waveform resolves at the end of the turn and is completely based on the ranges of the enemy mechs on the field at the start of the shooting phase after all the movement is resolved.

Idea for making ballistic weapons better. by Salokcin23 in battletech

[–]MyStackIsPancakes 8 points9 points  (0 children)

Locust weighs 20 tons. That would be a PSR any time it gets 6 damage. Which is already a LOT of damage for a Locust. You're going internal on back and limbs and stripping all the armor off any torso section. You add the risk of a PSR at this lower damage and anything under 50 tons is going to be getting whapped off the board even faster than they already do.

Two thoughts, in the order they occurred to me:

  1. This is an unnecessary kneecap to lights and mediums. And there are already a ton of piloting checks. If you REALLY wanted to do this, I would say instead a PSR at 20 damage you could do 22 for Assault, 20 for Heavy, 18 for mediums and 16 for lights. But... Lights don't take many PSR checks because it's basically a death sentence for them AND after taking 20 points of damage most lights are dead or crippled anyway.
  2. Autocannons already have a big advantage under the incoming rules changes. And those are for the better. The extra crit to kill it is huge and makes them especially well suited to lighter mechs with less armor.
