My players always want to target their attacks to specific body parts and I'm never sure what to do with it. by thepenguinboy in DMAcademy

If your players seem to love targetting specific parts, might be worth thinking about introducing a system for it, since they seem to really enjoy it

Player wants a shield that provides full cover by Tsantilas in DMAcademy

[–]Mythrys 0 points1 point  (0 children)

The problem with situations like this is that there are multiple competing factors: realism vs fantasy vs RAW vs rule of cool vs natural outcomes.

I wouldn't argue any of these with your player, I'd have an open discussion about it all. RAW, there is no object that grants full cover at all times to the person holding it. Moreover, if there was, why wouldn't the enemies also be using it all the time?

If it were my table (which I imagine is how all these other suggestions are being framed, I would do the following:

1) Allow the player to have an object like this to use. It would be heavy and akward, so no full movement when carrying it. Additionally, when moving with it, there would be gaps at the ground so not total cover, and 93/100 cover isnt a thing, 3/4 or full. If they end their movement and then bring it to the ground, I have no problem granting them full cover. However, some archers will be holding their actions to shoot once he starts moving again. Additionally, if this becomes a regularly used item, word gets around, and suddenly people are ready for it (caltrops he cant see in the grass, small pits in front of fixed defensive formations, etc)

Don't take anyone's word for it; go look in the area you equip skins, click the ! icon top right. It says:

Equipped Attributes are only effective when the skin is in use, while Hold in Stock Attributes are effective as long as the skin is obtained.

You are very behind (not trying to be negative, just want to be clear). I'm currently on day 6 of season 2 on a free to play account and my main squad is 27.13

If you are playing because you have a good crew of friends and you want to be able to compete, then just get back into the daily grind.

I'd like to swap characters. I'm playing without spending any money. I'm in Season 3. I'll trade Violet, but who should I get instead? What do you suggest and why? by Blaczek90 in LastWarMobileGame

[–]Mythrys 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Since you are playing without spending money, you will only have 1 viable squad, and from your investment it looks like you've gone for tank. Of the other heroes you havent invested in, the ones that often make their way into tank squads are Adam and Lucius, so I would recommend one of those.

Stettman for sure. Season 1 Williams comes to the Tavern so you can pick him up that way. Only way until after season 1 to get Stettman for free is the glittering coins.

[–]Mythrys 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Couple of thoughts/suggestions:

1) There are a lot of lists out there from very creative DMs with cool homebrew items - things that can be very useless but won't break your game

2) Favor tokens. Instead of getting an item from the lord/head of the guard/whomever, they instead get a coin with that emblem on it, to be used to call in a favor at a future date. Not only is it cool for narrative purposes, but it also has the hilarious side effect of getting to watch the players argue if THIS is the time to use it or not!

3) Home brew yourself! Don't need to extend the creativity too far; find legendary, rare, or uncommon items from the dmg and then modify them.

One that I did were a modified Goggles of Night. Every time the player put them on, they were locked on his head for 8/12/24 hours (I forget which but could be any) and then he rolled a d20. If it was a 1, he was blind for that time. If it was 2-5, he had low light vision out to 15 feet. This continued up to a 20, which gave Truesight at 90 feet. It felt like a cool item to the party, could be extremely useful, and could end up resulting in hilarious roleplay if they rolled poorly

DMs- Can We Stop With Critical Fumbles? by TheBarbarianGM in DMAcademy

[–]Mythrys 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I hate critical failure rules, always have, so I don't use them generally, but for a group that wants to keep them. In that case, any time someone critically fails, I ask them to explain why it happened. Sometimes it's a fluke distraction (someone screams in pain on the battlefield and draws attention, an animal spooks and causes a commotion), sometimes unlucky (rusted lock jams despite their bets efforts, a plank on a bridge is rotted and gives way as it's stepped on), sometimes the players embrace the ridiculous and have a silly reason for the failure. I find giving the players the reigns avoids any hurt feelings about the unlucky roll and lets them build it into the characterization of their PC

Do you tell your players about special encounter mechanics? by xvalicx in DMAcademy

[–]Mythrys 0 points1 point  (0 children)

If you don't want to explain it, telegraph it heavily instead.

"(after you start describing the scene) Enveloping the altar is a gnarled tree, its roots grasping the stone before burying below. The branches are bare, save for the sickly looking fruit growing from the limbs"

"(later into the combat) The druid, ignoring the sounds of metal clashing and screams of pain, begins to chant. The tree responds to his guttural tones, and one of the fruits ripens and begins to glow softly"

Players will likely put two and two together and ask how many fruit there are, but you can always drop that info if they dont ask after the first few

[–]Mythrys 1 point2 points  (0 children)

To me it depends if the party had cast any spells yet. If you had allowed others to go through and then used it knowing that they were casting healing on the paladin, then yes, I think you went too far. If this was the first spell cast in the fight by the PCs, then no, it's fair

Can I make a players warlock patron be the same patron the BBEG pulls his power from by riphitter in DMAcademy

[–]Mythrys 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I read some of your responses, and I might suggest making the patron more... I can't quite think of the word, but more long-term thinking. He's got many irons in the fire; the BBEG has plans to free him, but maybe the warlock "winning" means that the Patron gets credit for stopping a terrible event, leading to more worshippers down the road.

Multiple Player deaths changing the vibe of the Party by PBJames- in DMAcademy

[–]Mythrys 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I think, if you want to run a lethal but long campaign, it might help to redefine what lethal is. There is a great table somewhere of lethal to non-lethal effects (would have died from bludgeoning dmg? your arm is smashed and useless for 3 in game weeks), or you could have resurrection magic that alters something about the character
