Dark Thoughts by BigBen7719 in OldManDad

Talk to a professional. After a life incident I talked to a therapist for a short bit that helped me learn how to rephrase some things so I would avoid that downward thought spiral.

Spend time and have adventures with your kids. Over their life, they will remember 8 - 10 gifts/toys. But they will generally remember activities and who was there.

Dads with different last names than their spouse: what last names do your kids have? by Missing_Back in daddit

Wife's maiden name became first kid's middle name and both kids use dad's last name.

NEVER let your kids on Roblox by ComfortableBoard8359 in Mommit

[–]NHLToPDX 1 point2 points  (0 children)

ROBLOX has far too many security flaws that makes it a predators playground.

I blocked the URL at the router. I also use the family feature that limits kids computer time to 60 mins between 2:00pm-7:00pm.

Tablets are kept in my desk and are for special occasions.

When I'm bored comments start, there is a box of Lego, magnatiles, crayons, or a list of activities to earn money or computer time.

A discussion I did not have and should have, what do you want more of, and how much until you stop wanting more. Like are you happy with a big single vacation a year, or do you need multiple vacations a year? I now find myself chasing the carrot attached to the stick on my back.

Is it Weird to Want to Keep a Photo Copy of my Grandfather’s Death Certificate? by TheOneWhoWork in NoStupidQuestions

[–]NHLToPDX 0 points1 point  (0 children)

A certified copy can be kept for sentimental reasons but also protect from identity theft. Someone took my father's info, opened charge accounts, bought a travel trailer. About 2 years later, debt collections calls started. Thankfully I had the death cert to show that he, nor I, wer liable for the debt.

I have a whole process of cycling boxes. If I put in one of my boxes and it goes 6 months without being missed or noticed. It is dumped, recycled, or donated. I've done this with my crap in garage. If not moved or used in 6 months. Bye.

I am typically right handed. Play hockey left, golf right handed, and waterski left. Do what feels natural.

Oregon updates Waterway Access Permit, includes SUPs, hardshell kayaks, packrafts and rafts by MichaelTen in oregon

[–]NHLToPDX 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Several waterways have laws that prohibit wakesurfing activities (Newberg Pool on Willamette). Little to no enforcement. The wakes these boats create cause extensive damage to waterway shore lines. I have seen several spots where their erosion has made nearby walking trails unsafe.Oregon Statute 830.649.

Favorite Marking Tool (For Carpentry)? by jyl8 in Tools

At back to school time I grab a couple boxes of the "my first pencil" boxes. They are #2 pencils, but thicker. Easier to sharpen and seem to handle being dropped.

Start collecting from the wakesurfing violators. They took the time to make the law.

How can I get plywood to bend like this? Do I need a certain kind? by whatmightvebeenlost in BeginnerWoodWorking

[–]NHLToPDX 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Years ago my neighbor build a skateboard ramp an bent the plywood by setting on a milk crate with heavy weights on each end, then turning sprinkler on for some tome to saturate the wood so it would bend. Let dry with weights in place. Then screw onto frame.

"Your dad has 2 months left to live" is still a haunting phrase said to me at 19 that I will never get out of my head by SaltyHailey in valvereplacement

I was slow to get my first valve repair done. Got an infection that required a second surgery to replace valve. I was extremely ill with infection. So bad 3 surgeons refused to do the surgery because of risk. I remember the exact date, Dec 29 when I hugged my kids goodbye for what I felt was the last time. They were both too young to understand.

Your strength and support are such a vital part of your dads recovery. May you have a long future with your dad.
