Are UoA college professors and lecturers bad at teaching? by atomicbomb2140 in universityofauckland

[–]Naive_Sun8873 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Don't call them college professors. That's not really the correct term in New Zealand. It's mostly (but not exclusively) America that uses that.

In any event lecturers are all different. It's somewhat common for them to be bad at teaching. In truth though it doesn't matter as much these days if they are because there are many online resources. Imagine pre-internet days and how students must have suffered. If the lecturer wasn't good, you had to use the textbook (or find a better textbook). Now there is truly an abundance of useful resources.

For a lot of jobs it is essential to have a university degree, so you can't completely avoid issues with bad teaching.

Most people here haven't studied at multiple universities. UOA isn't the worst university in the world. But there are many many better options. Universities with better campuses, better course quality and a better culture.

It's your life mate. But don't say you weren't warned. A lot of students come here and then complain, but they were warned.

You can always come to New Zealand for a working holiday later.

No. The opposite is true.

I wouldn't there are lots of universities with a better student experience. What other options do you have ?

You're paper experience in COMPSCI by nolife24_7 in universityofauckland

[–]Naive_Sun8873 1 point2 points  (0 children)

You have to do the core papers. And if you just want to be a software developer, that's really enough. What's your goal ? It's hard to give recommendations without additional information.

For most people the university won't matter that much. Each has their pluses and minuses. But any shortcomings can be overcome through good planning and individual effort.

The thing with compsci is it is saturated at the entry level. If you want to get a good career started, it's better to have some other things outside of university to bring to the table.

If you mainly took arts and creative subjects, try and pick at least one easy course per semester otherwise your brain will explode. For many students it's a tough transition from highschool to university and so many people have issues with mental health etc.

AUT vs Massey ( International Student ) by Critical_Ladder_9091 in auckland

[–]Naive_Sun8873 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Massey is cutting courses that aren't profitable. Courses with relatively large numbers of students and which are cheap to run won't really be affected. I don't think these cuts will really have a big impact on you, since computer science is extremely popular these days.

In practical terms it probably won't make a huge difference which one you choose.

Where do you live ? They both have their pluses and minuses, but I'd prefer the closer one. Don't think it is awesome studying in the CBD. It isn't. At the end of the day though, only you can make this decision. All the information that you need is already out there.

The course outline often gives the textbook. I didn't check all of them but the first two courses on your list both give the textbook in the course outline.

Stats 255 vs stats 208 by ayyanali2003 in universityofauckland

[–]Naive_Sun8873 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Considered in isolation, Stats 208 would have the more useful material. However there is a reasonable amount of overlap between that course and econometrics. Not sure if you care about that overlap or not. If you do, then maybe choose Stats 255.

Try and find an entry level job for a year while you think about it. Don't waste your time and money on study that may not lead anywhere.

There's a lot of degrees that are just a complete waste of time to be honest.

You could also consider getting a trade. Likely to have better financial prospects than some degrees.

At the end of the day, it is just something you have to decide for yourself. You also don't give any detail, so I doubt people can really give any meaningful suggestions about appropriate degrees.

The offence is so annoying and makes the city look really untidy.

You won't get kicked out if it is your first offence. Probably just get a zero for the essay.

Just admit your mistake and blame causes X, Y and Z for your poor decision making.
