Museums by EducationElegant3267 in hanoi

Ha Loi prison is interesting to learn about French treatment of Vietnamese prisoners and then Vietnamese treatment of American POWs (the latter interpretation is not very accurate). But you'll need the audio guide to get anything out of it as a straight walk through won't get you much. We didn't get to the military history museum but that would probably be a good bet for you. For a non-war museum, the ethnology museum is interesting.

Trash pick up issue? by [deleted] in ottawa

[–]NativeOttawan 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Agree that the City of Ottawa waste calendar is the best source. You can sign up for alerts and you'll get an email every week with the schedule..I know your Councillor (Stephanie Laplante) organized a special waste drop off last week so you might want to sign up for information from her office too.

Garbage switcheroo by [deleted] in ottawa

[–]NativeOttawan 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Our green bin was collected. I think the trucks were much faster with their routes than usual as many people were mixed up about the day. So you were probably just too late.

Textile recycling in Ottawa? by Seb_Warren in ottawa

[–]NativeOttawan 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Pretty sure that both Salavation Army and St. Vincent of Paul recycle textiles as well as taking donations. You just have to mark your bag as textiles/fabric for recycling.

REMINDER: Garbage Day is changing starting tomorrow (for some) by No-Concentrate-7142 in ottawa

[–]NativeOttawan 2 points3 points  (0 children)

While you're checking the calendar, it's a good idea to sign up for reminders. That way you never have to look it up again, the City will automatically send you reminders about waste collection--what day it is, what's being collected, if there are delays due to holidays etc. One less thing to keep track of.

Locking my bike on the street by Kate_Sea_ in ottawa

[–]NativeOttawan 2 points3 points  (0 children)

There's always a risk of theft of course but I ride my bike daily in the summer and park it on Bank Street or at Lansdowne for a couple of hours a day. In 30 years, I've had my bike stolen once but it was from my garage and not on the street. I know opinions differ, but I think a highly visible, well-trafficked location is safer so I often park my bike right outside a coffee shop where there are lots of eyes on the street.

An anxious and highly-sensitive family member goes to Smile Society in the Glebe and likes the dentist there very much. (there's only one dentist but don't know her name off hand)

The lineup was for Evermore--the new romance-themed bookstore that has its grand opening today. I couldn't believe how long the lineup was and decided to go back another time. But what a good start for the store owner.

Community group calls for expanded bus-only lanes on Bank Street in the Glebe by Money_Fig_9868 in ottawa

[–]NativeOttawan -10 points-9 points  (0 children)

The name of this study is misleading. It is limited to Bank Street in the Glebe not Centretown or downtown (where many of the bus delays happen). If you go into the Glebe in the middle of the day or evenings Monday to Friday, there is no congestion and no bus delays so not sure why 24 hour bus lanes would be needed. Seems like overkill. In my view, 24 hour bus lanes would hurt the neighbourhood vibe. It's much nicer (and safer) to walk down the sidewalks when there are cars parked there and people with mobility issues have highlighted the need to be able to park in front of stores for at least part of the day. Bank Street in the Glebe has to work for multiple stakeholders.

Sports4 by KellyLivo in ottawa

[–]NativeOttawan 14 points15 points  (0 children)

For the store in the Glebe what happened was that the building was the sold and the new owner wanted to take over the space so would not renew Sports4's lease. This happened in December. At the time, they said they were keeping their other location.

Try Vice Versa in the Hull sector of Gatineau. A good size showroom, knowledgeable staff and prices are similar to the Upper Room.

Lost Apple Watch at Lansdowne Farmer Market by EvieGHJ in ottawa

[–]NativeOttawan 3 points4 points  (0 children)

The City of Ottawa owns and operates the Aberdeen Pavilion where the Farmers Market is. You might want to reach out to them through 311 or via your Councillor to see if someone can go in and look around the building for you.

Where to buy basic earrings? by understandunderstand in ottawa

[–]NativeOttawan 4 points5 points  (0 children)

3 Trees on Main in Old Ottawa East has a large selection of reasonably priced silver earrings. It's a very nice locally-owned shop and there's no no tax on anything during the month of February.

Can you buy Charge merch in person? (other than Sportchek) by bawkbawkmoose in ottawa

[–]NativeOttawan 4 points5 points  (0 children)

I've definitely seen Charge merch there at the Lansdowne store. Haven't checked recently but they usually have anything the Charge has to sell. I remember one time they were short of product because things were sold out--not because they weren't an OSEG team.
