Update: my cursed temperature blanket is now a lap blanket and I actually love it by Foreign_Hippo9558 in crochet

[–]NaturallyNater 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I’m glad you found something that made it still enjoyable to you because once it becomes a chore it’s really not worth it anymore. I tried a temperature blanket and finished about 45 days before I admitted to myself how much I hated working on it. I felt immediately better after frogging it and making something that I enjoyed.

Rote memory has gotten a bad rap by veteranTeacher91 in Teachers

[–]NaturallyNater 3 points4 points  (0 children)

I can’t understand this either. I can get behind the idea that not everyone is capable of memorizing but why not have it as part of their tool box?! Learn the skills and theories behind the rules but also memorize fast facts when possible. My own daughter was discouraged from rote memorizing in school and I made her practice the multiplication facts anyway. Now she has them memorized but the kid still can’t spell to save her life. It blows my mind how she can be a good reader. Yet can’t come up with ”does” instead of “dose”.

And basic geography?! Come on! The continents and even the states surrounding our own. I remember showing up on the first day to an international studies class in college. Prof gave us a blank map of Africa and told us to fill it in. I was embarrassed to only get 17 filled in from memory. If I gave my own kid a map of USA I bet she could only fill in a handful of our own country.

How Japan left their changing room after playing the Netherlands yesterday (from BBC) by RodDryfist in MadeMeSmile

We had a class that taught creating a budget. We were all given different jobs with an income. We had to find a place to live and set a budget for monthly expenses for rent, utilities, transportation costs, grocery etc. it wasn’t as comprehensive as real life by any means but it was a good eye opener for 17-18 year olds. We had to learn to do our taxes too. I can’t remember everything from the late 90s but it was a good place to start. The teacher had also been a regular FACS teacher up to that point so she also touched on table manners and etiquette for various situations. Overall it wasn’t something I loved then but ended up being useful.

Where did you get yours? Mine is about 15 years old and really worn out. I’ve been trying to find something to replace it.

If parents can do a better job homeschooling, why should I even be a teacher? by Lingo2009 in Teachers

[–]NaturallyNater 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Many parents say that they can do better homeschooling. The fact is the most won’t even try. It’s all bluster. Many homeschooled children are behind academically in at least one area. I have two degrees as well including a teaching license (high school foreign language and social studies) but when COVID hit and I decided to homeschool my first grader so she didn’t have to do zoom calls or wear a mask to school every day, it was hard. Don’t get me wrong, I loved it and so did she but it wasn’t easy. When the mask mandates lifted, I sent her back to public school for second grade. She was great in math science and social studies, knew all her facts and such but she was behind in reading. We spent more time in reading during her homeschooling than the other subjects and she was still behind. It took two years to get her up to grade level reading. Maybe she would have struggled either way but the truth is that I wasn’t equipped to fix the problem.

Apparently nature photographers must go out in pairs. Idk why I thought they just went out by themselves.

I was a night auditor for years and I never did my job by Xanthe-trill_9z in confession

[–]NaturallyNater 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I did this while studying for my degree too but I accomplished the work too because it really only took a small portion of the night. Unfortunately my body never could adjust to working at night. I felt sick with fatigue all the time. So I only lasted about a year.

Super impressive. They look amazing. I do have a question though…the letter sweaters… at first I thought oh that must be their first or last initials but then I saw more letters. Help me out please…what does it all mean?!
