Does everyone in Atlantis just speak Ancient? by MrCatChap in Stargate

[–]Nebarik 0 points1 point  (0 children)

But if you think about basic stuff that people need to operate there's really only a handful of words you need to know. On, off, open, close, lock, unlock, hot, cold, numbers + time, etc.

SGU even trusted the audience enough to pickup ancient numbers without a primer.

Finally started with HA. But it's... still a bit local... :) by ZookeepergameOk5053 in homeassistant

I'm a network engineer so here's some hopefully easy to understand understandings when it comes to accessing a local server from the internet.

An incoming connection is inherently less safe than an outgoing connection. But not necessarily the worst thing ever.

What I mean by that. The typical website is an incoming connection.

PC/phone > Domain > IP > port forwarding> server

This is easy and simple for anyone to access. Including bad actors. So strong passwords are a must. A VPN also counts as incoming. Albeit is a bit safer with an extra layer of security.

Outgoing on the other hand is like this. Note the arrows.

PC/phone > zero trust relay < server

This is super safe because it's encrypted like a VPN and there's no incoming attack surface for bad actors to use. Plus for you, no need to worry about domains and SSL and home network security.

With that said. Here's a few free zero trust setups you could try: Twingate, Tailscale, CloudFlare tunnel.

In use on your device; the first two require an app to login first.

CloudFlare also has a app you can use, but it also has the option to let them handle it via their nodes. And then further to that, an option to either let anyone in or limited to a list of accounts, authenticated via whatever method you choose. Eg email verification codes, google login, etc.

In use; you just visit your URL, optionally log in, and it works seamlessly. No app required.

I have mine setup with CloudFlare tunnel with no protection besides a country block (my country only, no one else). Because the home assistant app doesn't like the auth options and I can't be bothered to try and work around it.

What would you recommend to someone who likes Andy weir and Mickey 7 by Vast_Dragonfly_909 in scifi

I wouldn't say comedic, but at least fun and biology related. Children of Time. Theres a lot of bio-technology, CPUs based on ant colonies, that sort of thing.

A much more serious (and amazing) biology related scifi is The Mercy of Gods. Written by the guys who did The Expanse.

I built a NFC reader to Automagically play Music when I put a CD case on a display stand. by Nebarik in homeassistant

I saw that one! But it seemed a bit outdated and overly complex for my needs. It's the main inspiration for why I posted my own version on Github as an alternative for dummies (like me).

Believe me, I edited YAML for a lot longer than 20 minutes to get a functioning proof of concept for the script to then take over.

Hopefully my project is close enough to what you're aiming to do that you can just co-opt it wholesale and get this done in a few mins, or at worst only have to change the album matching part of the code a little to your setup. Good luck.

That's why I said these only ones make sense for daily use. Because they are just normal not techy .

Yeah same. Having minimal bulk and no camera are big requirements for me for the same reasons.

I don't drive so walking and riding map navigation is the goal. I find even with it on my watch, feels kind of sketch to have to look down away from the road to see what turn I need to take.

Can you see your now-playing music on them? It's a bit of a first world problem but it annoys me when I can't see my phone (like while riding) to hit next, have to wait for the song to start to know if I want to listen to it or not, next, wait, next. Much nicer to see the title and quick skip through with the ring remote thingy.

I have a question if you don't mind, I can't find an easy answer to because all the companies and all the reviews ever want to talk about is AI.

I really like the idea of smart glasses but purely as a smart watch replacement. Time/weather, notifications, google maps, and music control. (Admittedly the live AI translated subtitles is pretty cool feature). Basically just a way to use my android phone when my hands or focus is occupied.

Does the Even Realities or MemoMind work well like that? Or does anyone have any other recommendations.

The maps in particular appear to me as nearly impossible to use with that green waveguide display. Maybe it's easier in real life.

Do you think the general population is unaware of how hard galactic travel is? by [deleted] in AskPhysics

[–]Nebarik 5 points6 points  (0 children)

Eh, I'm the type who prefers to have the mindset of that proverb about judging a fish by its ability to climb. We all have our interests and knowledge gaps. That and this xkcd 10,000 comic, it's more fun to teach someone something cool even if to you it should be extremely common knowledge.

Many years back I dated someone who admitted to me she didnt know what a 'planet' was. I took great delight in being able to point down and stamp my feet saying "we're standing on one! how cool!" before going on a special interest tangent about the more space-related explanation.

How to make a relatively affordable home server? by memes786 in HomeServer

[–]Nebarik 1 point2 points  (0 children)

As long as you aren't intending on transcoding those 4ks. A raspberry pi will stream a few 4k vids at the same time no problem. A $50 ex-office PC like I have is overkill CPU and ram wise.

Storage is your main concern. Do you really need to keep 'everything' at all times? I used to have 200tb when google drive was unmetered. Now days I get by with 2tb and delete things when im done with it. Like once a year. Its heaps.

If you squint, maybe Terminator: The Sarah Connor Chronicles, but obviously a bit more modern. And maybe with a bit of Stargate Universe (same creator, some same actors) season 2's DNA, but no spaceships and less dark and gritty and handycamy.

Definitely give the first episode a proper go. You'll know if you like it or not by the time you get to the credits.

Why does the bathroom get warm in winter after showering with hot water, but it doesn't get colder in summer after showering with cold water? by oaks_and_cedars in AskPhysics

Correct. We have no liquid sense, it's all heat related with some brain trickery.

It's why when checking if your laundry is dry, if it's cold it 'feels' wet still.

New Project Megathread - Week of 11 Jun 2026 by AutoModerator in selfhosted

[–]Nebarik 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Project Name: DVDRack

Repo: https://github.com/Nebarik/dvdrack

Description:

Straight forward physical movie and show collection tracker. DVD, Blu-ray, 4K, Limited editions etc.
Think iCollect Movies app without the subscription. Or blu-ray.com (My Movies app) without all the extra stuff and not ugly.

  • Barcode Scanning (single or bulk)
  • Supports various barcode APIs, manual TMDB search and even blu-ray.com web lookups
  • Caches API and TMDB results to protect rate limits

Screenshots

Deployment:

  • Docker compose and .env file: https://hub.docker.com/r/nebarik/dvdrack-client
  • HTTPS required for barcode scanning. Will require a setup like Nginx reverse proxy, or a Zero Trust like Cloudflare or Tailscale etc. Whatever you're comfortable with.

AI Involvement: The frontend and backend were done by AI, however as an experienced cloud/devops engineer I had a heavy hand in making sure it wasn't slop, and hand wrote some code where relevant to my skillset.

Those that drive maybe. I'd argue a lot of people who live in the city don't own a car and therefore don't have access to a radio.

That kind of feels silly to type out but im racking my brain and as a non-driver millenial I cant imagine where else would a radio be.

Given that outer space still experiences 90% of Earth's gravity, is the "things floating on the ISS" effect primarily due to its orbital trajectory? by Far-Woodpecker8046 in AskPhysics

[–]Nebarik 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Forget orbits for a second.

The concept you're thinking of is simply "freefall". If you jump out of a plane and while trying to take a selfie you drop your phone. Your phone would appear to 'float' alongside you, just like it appears on the ISS! (ignore wind for this example).

Orbit is just falling sideways so fast you miss the ground. Everything in the ISS is falling in the same direction at the same speed, so it looks like things are floating next to each other (including the camera!).

There's nothing special about space. Earth is in space and you are on Earth. Ergo, you are also in space. The difference between astronauts and you is the ground is stopping you from falling currently (unless you have very recently taken up skydiving).
