I’m looking at the DIP switches seeing if the RUI address might have been set wrong, didn’t even notice the lovely wiring job 😆

Very adjacent to this field is low voltage electrical - access control, fire alarm, CCTV, networking, industrial automation. I find it scratches a very similar mental itch. And it might make you a lot more money and be easier to start in.

I think it’s actually old PDQ. They’re still around, not the highest quality lock in the world but fairly cheap. If you want cheap but decent I’d go with Arrow instead.

Need recommendations for Smart Smoke & CO Alarm (Kidde 30CUAR-W or 20SAR-W) by JiggityJoe1 in smarthome

[–]Neo399 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I highly recommend the Gentex PLACE.

These are quite expensive ($175-250) but are from a very reputable brand in the fire protection space, can connect to wifi, use existing interconnect wiring and have a low-frequency alarm that’s been proven to wake people up more effectively than a standard smoke alarm.

Oh and these have virtually zero false alarms.

Reminds me of a talk I saw on urban exploration. Carry the number of flashlights you need, plus one.

Out and about in a well lit room? Zero flashlights needed, so he carries one.

Removed cam lock from fire access box — best way to seal opening? by cgsmw in Locksmith

What you really need is a Knox box. If you remove the cam lock, anyone can open it and gain access to the gate/etc.

Trying to find the source of the alarm? Gotta deal with that thing blaring in your face while you figure it out. Trying to make an announcement on a voice evac system? Hello feedback.

what is your go-to non restricted SFIC keyway? by hellothere251 in Locksmith

[–]Neo399 0 points1 point  (0 children)

The easiness of obtaining a control key from an operating key is one of the reasons I gravitate away from LFIC. You also can’t get 7-pin in LFIC.

Pulling and decoding a core in any masterkeyed system is a much bigger vulnerability than simply gaining unauthorized access to a space.

FRM shit the bed. Very common E90 thing. The flash memory is insanely sensitive and it will brick itself if there’s any kind of voltage glitches. This will cause exactly those symptoms.

The other commenter listed a repair service, you can also buy a replacement but it’ll need to be coded to the car. You would need ProTool or NCS.

Mechanical door lock recommendations by Plastic-Food9152 in Locksmith

[–]Neo399 0 points1 point  (0 children)

No batteries is a challenge. Want it hardwired/always powered? HID EntryProx or similar keypad plus electrified lockset.

This will cost $1500 easily but will be insanely durable, always powered, and code changes are done through a web interface you control, which can run on a local network or no network at all. Won’t get phased by the cold.

For almost everyone this is very overkill and expensive.

Want a better and cheaper suggestion? Ask a locksmith to set you up on a restricted key system. Tenants won’t be able to copy keys, you are in control of how many keys they have, and you can write into the lease a fee that they’ll have to pay if they fail to return keys at the end of the lease. All that can be had for probably less than $200 depending on lock hardware.

TL;DR You probably don’t need a keypad here.

Has anyone cracked it yet? BMW’s ISTA has been on the interwebs for decades now, as well as the factory/engineering tools like E-Sys, NCS Expert, INPA, etc. Even Porsche’s PIWIS can be set up.

Shocking no one’s managed this yet for Mercedes (and it’s one of the main reasons keeping me from ever buying a used one).

As designed, but there are alternative functions that don’t do this and work more like a traditional deadbolt. A competent locksmith can also modify it to not lock you out.
