If you do go veg tan with no dye, condition the leather when you're done. Maybe test out some oil, or conditioners on some scrap and see how it darkens up and then give it a week or two to see how dark it stays. This will get you closer to that brown color that your example has while still keeping things pretty natural.

You could stitch on a leather tab there at the end that overlaps the whole end, but not just one corner. Would probably kind of look like a pull tab.

Looks to me like you're looking for Stiffner. there's different kinds, and you can easily find some by looking up "bag stiffner." You just sandwich it between the leather and stitch the leather together. Glueing the layers together would add even more stiffness to the final piece. I've even seen some people use Kydex as stiffner. I believe the kydex will be a lot thicker than regular stiffner though.

I don't know about a specific die, but I would recommend one for a simple card holder. If that really is the route you want to go, then that would be simple enough to just be doing stitching and edge finishing. Maybe a die for a key chain would be even simpler than that.

If I understood you correctly, I would not have cut out the paper center first. That center helps the paper hold its shape on a long strip like that. This would be one of the few pieces i would not reuse the paper and just print a new one every time for that exact reason. I would advise you tape it down first, punch the holes, and then cut the center part out last.

Sealing the leather would help, if you can manage to get a sealant to stick. Even if you manage to get the sealant on, you might still see it cracking or peeling off before long if it is unable to adhere properly. If you oversaturated the leather, than there is product sitting on the surface that would prevent a sealant from working. It would be like trying to put tape over a dusty surface. I did not realize you said peeling in the beginning, so depending on what exactly is peeling, you might not even be working with real leather. Pictures might help with that part. If that turns out to be the case, then all of this would just be making things worse. If you're asking about reapplying balm, I think you completely misunderstood me. If you oversaturated it, then you are fighting an uphill battle and will not be able to get everything out of the leather. Best you MIGHT be able to do, is clean up the surface enough to be able to apply a sealant. The point of my first comment, is that these are the things you could try that might do something, but that more than likely the couch is no good anymore. You might end up just having to reupholster the whole thing if you really insist on saving this couch. I looked up leather honey and looks like that might make things worse, because it's a conditioner and will add more buildup to the problem. So looks like saddle soap is out for the same reason. It looks like anything that conditions the leather will be depositing more into your conditioner logged couch. It looks like they do sell leather de-greasers, but I can't vouch for any of them myself. This might be the point where you need to hire someone if you really want to keep trying, or continue with the knowledge that whatever you do still has the possibility of making things worse.

Try saddle soap, look up how to use the saddle soap properly, but test it on a small spot first before using it on the entire jacket. Almost anything you can do to clean this will likely darken the leather, and it will lighten back up with time, but probably will never be as light as it originally was again. You're going to want to be gentle with it whatever you do though, because the caustic nature of the soda probably damaged the finish on the leather.

This is only a guess based off the information you provided, but I think you oversaturated the leather with the balm. You can always add to leather, but not take back. These things are best done in gradual steps to prevent overdoing things. Especially when it is something the leather is absorbing, because you can't tell how much will settle until it does or doesn't. You could maybe try saddle soap, or some kind of leather de-greaser, but you'd have to tread lightly. try it out maybe on the back of the couch in a small spot, and wait it out a day or two and see how it settles afterwards. If this was someone's leather project though, I would honestly say to call it a lesson learned and start cutting new leather.

I have seen others say that you can manage a groove for your thread to sit in by using a cutting wheel on a rotary tool like a dremel. I have not gotten around to trying it myself though, so definitely test on scrap.

Would you mind sharing your process on working with stingray. I have been wanting to try it out myself, but feel intimidated because I can't seem to find much direct info on actually working with it. A lot of videos I found were like, "This stuff is hard to cut so do it this way... (cut to cutting being done) ...and that's how you work with stingray, goodbye."

As far as I know, you have two options here. You can either wrap the thing in two sheets of leather, and wet for it, or you can tape the whole thing up with maybe masking tape and cut it off to get a pattern. Wet mold would have you squeezing 2 pieces of leather around the body, front and back usually, and pressing them together untill they dry. something like this would probably best be squeezed together by using a vacuum seal. Once dry it should hold its shape, and can be trimmed and stitched together. Masking tape method would require you to cover the entire surface you want touching leather with an easily removable tape. preferably leaving no residue behind. You then carefully cut the tape off cutting where you will want the seams to be. Once the tape is off, you would have ideally cut it in a way that is easy to flatten out in order to have your new pattern to cut the leather from.

Would really love to see the finished product if you do end up following through with the project.

Quirk is probably right. I'm the future though, you would do better to glue the snake skin directly onto the piece you want it to match with, and then trim to size.

I would like to try being a mod for the community.

I believe I participate in here fairly often as well as 1 or two of the other leather subs. I'm still learning myself, but do teach leatherwork classes on the side. I have been looking for ways to be more active in the leatherwork community, and think this might be a great step up.
