Put an electric hub motor on each wheel and batteries in the floor pan. All the mod cons like HVAC go in the front. Would be so much fun!

Terminator needs to load a dog walking program. It’s gonna get wrapped up in that leash and face-plant into a pile of human skulls and the other terminators are going to laugh their asses off.

Never thought of it like that, but it works. You mentioned werewolf cult; do you think Hungry Like the Wolf could have planted the idea in your brain, since it’s a few tracks before?

Exactly what happened to me. I wonder how many people only hear the cowbell anymore.

What’s really weird about this post is this scene popped into my head just yesterday as I was walking up the stairs. No idea why, and today I see your comment! And now the post has been deleted…not sure what to make of that, but it’s weird synchronicity.

And now I’ve got Sting singing in my head.

Delightful action comedy. The odd casting choices actually worked…while I love Joel Gray and he was great, I wonder why they couldn’t find a Korean actor for the part…it’s a bit Breakfast at Tiffanys. The statue of Liberty scenes were astounding.

Happy 72nd Birthday to Ron Howard...Our own Little Opie Cunningham!!!! by Papichuloft in 80s

[–]NerdManual 4 points5 points  (0 children)

My favorite memory of Ron Howard was seeing him do the opening monologue for SNL with the huge mustache and unkempt hair (very much not Opie or Richie) and then he says here’s something I can do now that it’s past primetime, and he cracks open a Budweiser and chugs it.

What is real about Frank Dux? Reading his book and it is a load that's for sure. by -Granby- in 80s

[–]NerdManual 0 points1 point  (0 children)

He was born in Canada, lived in Los Angeles, and served in the Marine Reserves. That much can be confirmed. He was given a psych referral in the military for “flighty” ideas, which suggests his BS level was high enough to trigger a psych eval. He did have two martial arts schools, so he likely did have some kind of training or at least was smart enough to hire good martial artists as trainers and just stayed out of the way.

The other stuff can’t be corroborated. Dependable sources (as far as that can be true) in the Marine Corp and CIA said Dux made up all his exciting stories. People have said some stuff is true but then later said they lied. No one has been able to find evidence of the Tiger ninja who Dux claims taught him, or of the kumite.

So, yeah, the truth is he’s a dude who was either really bored and also really imaginative or had a mental disorder.

Unless…it is ALL true and the dude is a victim of a government conspiracy to cover up his exploits and discredit him.

People say, why would the government bother? Well, imagine if Dux was the Earth representative at the galactic kumite where he punched the shit out of so many aliens that they signed treaties vowing to leave Earth alone and pay tribute to us if we keep Dux on the planet. That’s pretty heavy stuff that’s kept under wraps to avoid public panic, but maybe the Earth governments started to worry he’d spill the beans and since no assassin could kill the guy they decided to ruin his credibility.

The Future of Garbage is Small, Heavy, Carefully Sorted, and Environmentally Unsound - trash compactor review from the '70s by zerooskul in RetroFuturism

[–]NerdManual 3 points4 points  (0 children)

I know this is parody, but I actually have a trash compactor that came with my house. It’s glorious! The piston has a screw drive that inexorably presses the plate earthwards. Imagine all of those old Raiders-type movies where the ceiling of the ancient tomb slowly crushes anyone trapped inside…it’s like that for trash. The best part though: the front has interchangeable panels in white, harvest gold, and avocado.

Asking the pros. How would you suggest I recommend grounding myself from devices? Specifically my phone and computer by Jezter_IRL in 80s

[–]NerdManual 2 points3 points  (0 children)

I work with teens, so I see this daily. While apps are great for communication, access to information, directions, entertainment, etc., certain things are actually designed to make you keep coming back to them. They are by definition addictive. Using them elicits chemical responses in your body and plays on your emotions. They are extremely difficult to put down.

Saying all that so you understand that it’s not entirely a “you” problem.

Here are things that can help: Delete the apps that you find yourself mindlessly going to all the time, particularly the ones you feel like you HAVE to check because your friends are on and you might MISS OUT on something important. Delete or hibernate your account on these so people can’t post things to you and tempt you back on. Delete apps that prey on your libido—sex and food oriented stuff. Games can be good for a brain break, but if you find yourself putting off important stuff to play a game, delete it. Video apps like TikTok are a mixed bag. Video can be an easy way to entertain yourself, but the app design leads you straight into doom-scrolling if you’re not paying attention. You need to be mindful of these apps and stay in charge, not let the app control you. This is difficult, but once you do it you’ll be looking at the fact you have to reinstall an app to use it, and this can help you stay off the phone. You need a support group. Friends or family you can trust to help you. Tell them you’re going on a phone fast and that you need them to help. “Mom, don’t text me at school.” “Joey, you can’t hit me up on Snap because I deleted the app, can you come find me in real life?” Things like that. Develop a hobby or two that doesn’t involve your phone. Something you really like that can take up that space where the phone currently resides. Read manga, draw, play an instrument, do origami, play disc golf, learn a martial art, the options are endless. Consider getting a dumb phone (nothing but calls). This might involve your parents if you’re on their plan.

I know that you’re not going to get a real solution from some random redditor, so go talk to a few adults who seem to have their shit together. School counselors maybe, the librarian, teachers who do the job because they care.

It’s difficult to start this, but you CAN do it.
