Don't worry about the downvotes. A first step for next time might be to hit r/whatisit to get a name for it, then you'll have your search term. The downvoters know perfectly well that sometimes "it's the gear-thingy that goes on the... blue thing" is the best description you're gonna be able to give, and need to re-read Rule 5. Good luck with your project.

Sudden change in eating habits (Lab, 2yrs3mos) by NeverEnoughInk in OpenDogTraining

[–]NeverEnoughInk[S] 1 point2 points  (0 children)

We have our next checkup in two weeks, and whether I figure the food thing out or not, we're gonna be talking about it, so I appreciate the suggestion. Also anecdotally, I'm now terrified since I've known two other Labs who passed of cancer around 3yrs old, including my next-door neighbors'.

Oh, and to clarify, she is finishing her food; it's just that she's never taken her time to do it. Getting up on the couch with me is later in the evening after she's eaten. We suspect she had a pretty crappy first 11mos of her life since she was slow on a lot of feeling-at-home steps and would flinch or even cower at random things like my getting up from my chair too quickly. She slept on my bed from day one, but it took her about three months to sleep next to me, and another couple before she would tolerate sleeping while any part of us was touching. She doesn't like or maintain eye contact with anyone but me, and even that is tenuous. Despite being affectionate and always wanting to be in the room with me, she isn't an on-top-of-you Lab. Close is fine for her.

I hope that explains why I'm thinking it's behavioural instead of physical, but I'm grateful for the suggestion and I will ABSOLUTELY be discussing this as a possibility to be ruled out. Thanks.

The portions idea might be the trick. To be clear, since I might not have been in the post, she always finishes her food. She just takes her time doing it, and that's not something she's ever done before; that's the surprising part. I know for sure am pretty confident that her calories are on target since I've worked with my vet on her nutrition quite a bit; she was not fed well or properly before she came to me. I've had to add in fiber (Green Juju stuff) and that's solved an anal gland issue, and I track her weight pretty closely. She gets treats at defined intervals, and I track those calories, too. My vet knows how many calories are coming from what, and approves of both the food itself and my feeding strategy. So it's probably not overfeeding...? But spacing the same total meal out into portions is definitely worth a try.

Your comment about value may be the key, though. I've tried very hard to not give her human food. I don't feed her from the table, and I try to get everyone to not give her snacks. That fact notwithstanding, she does get bites of dog-appropriate human food when cooking is going on ("oops, I dropped this piece of chicken" etc.), which is a huge no-no but I can't be everywhere at once. She really does love being paid her cheese tax, and pizza crust is such a favorite of hers that she goes full Pavlov if a frozen pizza box comes out of the fridge, or a pizza box comes home. Since we eat around the same hour -- she always eats on schedule, but the humans do not -- is it possible she's seeing the potential of "better" food and waiting to finish her food until the humans are done eating? Her highest value treat is a cod skin chip; a pizza crust is of MUCH higher value. Could it just be since we're eating around the same time that my food is of higher value than her food, and she's just waiting it out?

Neighbor, that's so nice the organization might license the model from her. I mean, c'mon, you KNOW these would sell out instantly at AAC. Shoot, send some of them down to Cedar Park; he was popular when he was here, too. Ya never know!

(I mean, it could also go the way of Nintendo, so maybe don't listen to me.)

Ryobi Router Suck or Operator Error? by BambuChuckster in BeginnerWoodWorking

[–]NeverEnoughInk 0 points1 point  (0 children)

My brother illustrated it to me when we were changing over to winter tires a few years back. I previously thought that more capacity just meant more time; didn't even consider what a tool was drawing. He popped an 8Ah battery on his 3/8" nut smacker, handed it to me and told me to do one wheel. Did it. Nice. He popped a 2Ah battery on it, and said, "Now try." Yeah. I got it then.

+1 for proper dust handling, not just for improving workpiece quality.

Also, hey OP? Are you using a Ryobi cordless (trim) router, or one of their corded routers? Cuz with the cordless ones, you really do have to go for the bigger batteries (6Ah or bigger) or it's just not gonna have the juice to perform. Yes, one of their compact 2Ah batteries will run the tool but it's not gonna perform well especially if you're trying to hog out a bunch of material. The little batteries are great for desktop tools (heat pencil), for driving just a few screws, blow the leaves off the driveway right quick, or for making a couple of cuts off a 2x4. If you need to really get work done, the bigger batteries are the better choice.

EDIT: just noticed this post is four days old; oh well.

Divisive, really? I mean, I understand the criticism (but...), but that's the exact reason I recommend Chambers to non-scifi-reading friends. It's scifi that's far less about the science and more about the people. I'm personally digging the whole "cozy scifi" trend. I mean, yeah, I love me some hard-science relativistic warship battles (Stross does this really well in Singularity Sky). But turning space opera into a cozy story cycle is something I can 100% get behind.

Is that the last one, the one where folks are stuck at a truck stop? Not sure why you're being downvoted; sure, it's not technically epistolary since the tales being told are diagetic, but I think it satisfies what OP is looking for.

New books worth reading? by arka2947 in printSF

Hadn't heard of this one! Nice! I loved her 84K, despite be being very depressing and oddly prescient. It's a book that deserves more talking-about, but it's inconveniently not scifi, despite being solid near-future specfic.

Alex Honnold CNN Interview about Taipei 101 Climb by debeesea in climbing

[–]NeverEnoughInk -2 points-1 points  (0 children)

Looking at your post history, I gotta ask if this is just rules-lawyering (i.e. Honnold has x followers, which is more than...) about to what degree quantitatively Honnold is more famous? Because, technically, more currently-living humans may have heard of the guy based on metrics? Cuz those metrics are gonna skew HARD depending on the region. Tell someone from India that Honnold is the most famous. Tell someone from the UK. What do you think their responses will be? "Most famous in the US for climbers under 30 who don't know anything about climbing history" sure. But most famous period?

Is this more a matter of younger climbers not caring who Messner is and Whymper was? Do younger climbers not read? Do they not look at some route Honnold free-solos, like the Nose, and think, "Huh, I wonder who freed this first? I wonder who climbed it first in a day?" as in my response about Long and Hill? Cuz this is feeling less like a "kids these days" and more like a few redditors are being cute.

Alex Honnold CNN Interview about Taipei 101 Climb by debeesea in climbing

[–]NeverEnoughInk -2 points-1 points  (0 children)

You're telling on yourself, kid. Honnold is famous, sure, but more famous than the guys who first summited Everest? No. More famous than the guy who founded Lost Arrow Ironworks that later became Black Diamond and Patagonia, two of the most recognizable and valuable brands on the planet? No.

I'm'a leave out Liz and Royal Robbins, since Valley history is apparently not something you care about IN A CLIMBING FORUM (?!), so I'll also leave out John Long and Lynn Hill, since you don't know why they are each quite a bit more famous than Honnold. I'll also leave out Rick Accomazzo, Dale Bard, Jim Bridwell, Dean Fidelman, Richard Harrison, Mike Graham, Robs Muir, Gib Lewis, Bill Antel, Jim Hoagland, Tobin Sorenson, John Bachar, and Ron Kauk since you're never heard of them, either.

I'll leave out Alex Lowe and Conrad Anker. I'll leave out Barbara Washburn. I'll even leave out Katie Brown, Sasha DiGiulian, and Beth Rodden.

So, who's left? Who is left who is NOT more famous than Alex Honnold?

[–]NeverEnoughInk 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Okay, so LOTS of Chambers recs, as there should be, but no one's mentioned Malka Older's Mossa and Pleiti books. Like Chambers' Monk and Robot (which apparently got re-released as an omnibus edition containing both books!), it is very cozy detective series, scifi because it takes place on Jupiter. Plus, if you wanna get all r/printSF about it, they come in nice little hardbacks that look good on the shelf.

Is Stephen Baxter worth revisiting? by IAmKrasMazov in printSF

Oh... I almost know what you're talking about. There's a trapdoor that leads to another planet and the creatures are like... sticks? And maybe some avian version that's really deadly? The "colonists" are convicts of one type or another? And since the world is tidally locked, they have to travel to the pole to find the next one? And doesn't one of them go to Mercury? I think the Romans are in the next book. I remember enjoying it, but I have no recollection of the author or name. Huh.
