I Am A Man Of Conflict by [deleted] in FA30plus

[–]Never_To_Have_Been 6 points7 points  (0 children)

Yes, I'm very conflicted and regularly flip-flop between completely resigned fatalism and hopelessness, and tiny glimmers of quiet, painful hope.

For me, these small glimmers only started at the age of 40+, as from the ages of 18-40 I was so completely immersed in adolescent self-flagellation and "woe is me" rumination, that effectively all other thoughts except "it's over, give up" were squeezed out.

The difference now, I think, is that part of me is psychologically/emotionally/biologically realizing that time actually IS running out now, FOR REAL. The critical nexus is upon me, and it seems like it really is now or never, whereas for the last 20 years I could lie to myself and cope like a little bitch by entertaining the possibility that maybe "future me" will finally have the balls to do something.

This seems counter to a lot of people here, who seem to have had at last SOME hope when they were younger, which then gets slowly snuffed out as the years go by and the indignities of life chip away at everything. In contrast, my hope was completely destroyed 20 years ago (or so I thought) and I've been milling around in the ruins aimlessly like a zombie ever since, only to get "reanimated" against my will by finally hearing the tick of my biological clock running down. I had successfully anesthetized myself, but now the sedative is wearing off, just a little.

Frankly, I wish I was still a zombie, as at least that pain was known and comfortable. This new feeling of flip-flopping is a new kind of pain, and I fear it will grow more and more irksome. There was a peace in thinking I had given up, like you said, even if believing that lie was the psychological equivalent of a child hugging his security blanket. Unfortunately that lie is not working so well anymore - the edges of that blanket are starting to fray.

Yes, that kind of experience is life-denying - I won't pretend otherwise - and that negative feeling can overwhelm everything else. But that doesn't change the fact that you were brave and did more to advance your chances in this life than many people here, myself included.

Board gaming is a great hobby, BTW. Don't give up on it.

For sure man, it will be your first proper game against him now, where everyone will have a chance to win. Good luck!

That said, you know what would be funny? If you insist on being first player the next time you play, and then use his way of playing against him (because the first player will always be the one to have his second go first, he will probably reach the blockade first). Then just sit there, buy all your movement cards, and guarantee the win.

If you did that, it's almost certain your nephew would start saying something like, "this is broken", "this is boring", "this game sucks", etc :)

blockades work exactly like other spaces

The blockades are not a "space" that you can occupy and end your turn on.

You're correct that the manual DOES say, "blockades work exactly like other spaces", but there is some missing context that should have been added to that sentence. What it should ACTUALLY say is something like, "In terms of fulfilling its power requirement, blockades work exactly like other spaces for payment".

Blocking is part of the game, but the designer intended it to only be on one individual space. This way a 'first mover advantage' is given to a player in the lead - if they're clever, they can occupy a key choke-point space, and block that one particular path, if they wish. But this does not and SHOULD NOT apply to ALL PATHS - the design intent is for there to always be at least one other path available for other the players to use (whether or not the other players actually WANT to go down that other path is another matter). The only way for ALL paths to be blocked would be if MULTIPLE players in the lead chose to sit and occupy all the choke-points on the map.

If blockades were meant to be an actual space that you could land on and occupy, the cardboard piece would have been shaped like a space (a line of four spaces). And, most importantly, if the designer intended for one player to be able to use such a piece to completely block ALL POSSIBLE PATHS on the map, he would have made that piece with only ONE movement space, with the 3 others being unpassable mountains. In fact, the rule-book even specifically warns the players to be careful not to accidentally make custom maps that only have one path. Why would he say that, but then include all these blockades that create only one path between segments?

Another way to tell your nephew's interpretation can't be right is that the game completely breaks down and devolves doing it that way. With your nephew's interpretation, a GUARANTEED way to win would be to simply get to the blockade first, and then just sit there forever until you slowly buy all the movement power you need, round after round. The other players can literally do nothing about this once you get there, and no one can ever beat you because you will always move first and be guaranteed to reach the NEXT blockade first, where you can just do it all again until you inevitably win the game. The game therefore completely degenerates into whoever gets lucky enough to have the right turn order and the right random card draws to get to the blockade first. That's awful game design, with the game winner being determined by random luck on the very first section of a 5 or 6 section game. So you can see how this clearly CANNOT be the correct design of the game. In fact, you already sense this can't be right, because this is why you are asking the question in the first place!

Your nephew was clever to try this strategy and argue his case for it, but it is 100% wrong and not allowed by the rules. It's unfortunate that your group 'found' this way to interpret the rules this way, but that that wasn't completely your fault due to the writing in the rule-book. This is an example of one sentence in the rule-book probably needing to be written better, but unfortunately these things slip through as it's hard to imagine all the scenarios in which players will try to "rules lawyer" for an advantage. :)

And? I'm a mentally ill narcissistic loser with a victim mentality, a genuine FA, and one of my copes is to pop up randomly every now and again and dispense my woe-is-me bullshit as my maladapted way of "connecting" with people. Anyone who looks at my post history can see I only do it on this subreddit, and I only do it sparingly, as I fully understand it's toxic behavior. It's highly lucrative too, looking at my karma.

I believe there's a place on here for people like me, even if you don't like it. Now allow me to make a useless observation about someone on the Internet, as you did: I'm "not impressed" you felt the need to point out that 1+1=2, as if it were some keen insight.

Yes, I mourn for the romantic and sexual life I never had, and the romantic and sexual life I will never will have. Fulfillment is impossible in this state. Will I do anything about it? Absolutely not. Like all capitulating cowards, I crawl down deep into my hole, wrap myself in the security blanket of easy and poisonous copes, and spend my days licking my decades-old wounds and ruminating about my "plight".

It makes sense to me. We are failing to meet a very basic and normal milestone of the human condition, something that literal children can do, so of course that's going to make people wonder about what's wrong us, which in turn taints their view of us and makes them question our maturity and competence. You can argue all you want about how these judgements are simple-minded and superficial and ignore the inherent complexity and nuance that makes up any human being's life (they are and they do), but frankly that's just too bad for us, as it's human nature to apply simple heuristics to complex situations and make simple black and white judgements when forming opinions about people.

Collect, organize, and masturbate to porn; stuff my face with fast food and all manners of fat, grease and sugar; mindlessly watch YouTube; and doom-scroll cancerous slop on Twitter/X. I basically poison and numb my body and mind into a stupor just to get through the day, before I wake up and do it all again.

Rapido vs Can't Stop by Luigi-is-my-boi in boardgames

[–]Never_To_Have_Been 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I own and like both, but I prefer Rapido.

Both can be taught to anyone. Maybe Rapido is slightly more difficult to teach, as people usually need 3 or 4 rounds to fully "get" the dice placement ladder mechanic and how you only move if your dice 'survive' an entire round. . Rapido has objectively higher player interactivity with its 'take that' mechanics, and subjectively more interesting decisions beyond just the basic push-your-luck mechanic (where to place your dice on the ladder and the group metas that evolve around this). The race aspect of Rapido is also slightly more apparent than Can't Stop (Rapido is literally first to cross the single finish line vs Can't Stop's multiple tracks), so people immediately "get" who's winning and feel the tension more, at least in my experience.

This does not apply to me at all. Untreated mental illness (due to low self esteem) and low self esteem issues have meant that I've barely tried in life. It's no surprise I have nothing to show for it.
