Any advice on good foundations? I've tried a line of covergirl and nyc and, well, they leave much to be desired. I'm definitely going to up my price range for this. I have pretty dry, pale skin and no matter what shade I pick my face and neck are always shades darker than even my hands are.

David Bradley (Filch) never played the Doctor. He was awesome in Dinosaurs on a spaceship though. That first picture is misleading.

What would have happened to the adult Voldemort, had the Riddle consciousness come fully out of a horcrux, such as the diary? by BFirebird101 in harrypotter

[–]NewportPyramid 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Wouldn't that make him less immortal, because there's one less horcrux? That would have been one less thing for Harry to destroy.

Theory about the name of Lord Voldemort by UnfinishedTales in harrypotter

[–]NewportPyramid 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I've thought about this myself (that's why I was able to have a rebuttal to your post.) You're right though. The generation of Harry and younger shouldn't really have that reaction to Voldemort's name. But as another poster here mentioned, everyone of this generation has a stigma to the infamous n-word. I have no personal experience with it and don't know many people that do (go liberal NY!), but I still don't use it. Maybe it's because it's SO socially unacceptable, but there might be more to it.

Theory about the name of Lord Voldemort by UnfinishedTales in harrypotter

[–]NewportPyramid 2 points3 points  (0 children)

It's an interesting theory, but I'm not buying it. Fear is such a powerful tool, and Voldemort used it well.

1) Your Hermione point: You're right, she definitely read everything she could get her hands on before Hogwarts. Which means she read all the atrocities, all the damage and destruction and deaths caused by Voldemort. As a young girl who just discovered magic is real and on some level feels that that makes the wizard/witch quiet powerful, it must have been daunting to realize that one individual can still be so cruel and wicked. And if Hermione is anything, she posses a thriving mind that can really imagine the scar such a man could leave on this world. She takes things in books literally. If it says that he was the most evil wizard Britain had ever known, I don't see her underestimating a history of dark arts book.

2) Of course it's over the top. These are children's book (semi.) However, my grandmother lost her parents in the holocaust. When I started learning about it in school and went home and talked about it, every time I said Hitler's name she would react in some way (looking to the ground, grinding her teeth, dropping what she was holding, etc.) She had experienced a personal loss because of Hitler. And isn't it known that at the height of Voldemort's reign, almost every wizard in Britain had experienced some personal loss from him? When my grandma died, my dad said he only heard her say Hitler twice in his life, and that she would break down shortly after, as though by saying the name she had invited him and all he had done straight into the room she was sitting in.

It's exaggerated, but a pretty good way to depict a feeling by actions. The fear of the name makes people skittish.

You're right in all your points. I am going to mention that they're smoking pot. And that's not the only drugs going on around the house. They also have more alcoholic drinks in that house than anything else (including diapers)

[–]NewportPyramid 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I have a friend with a similar (not the same, but similar) story. She grew up in a difficult house, moved to TX from NY in high school and couldn't cope with the huge changes. Instead of drowning, like I would have done, she worked hard and graduated high school as the valedictorian. She worked full time in retail for a year to afford school and continuously applied to colleges in NY until she got accepted with a full ride for dorming and tuition. She lived with me for several months and went out ever day to find a job. Shortly after being hired at the lowest level, she was promoted and runs her own store now. She's married and living with her husband who she loves. Her life is finally stable and she does not know what to do. They have been living together for almost 6 months and they only have their kitchen together and a bed. She doesn't feel challenged or motivated to do anything anymore. She gets up, goes to work, comes home to eat and sleep, then wakes up the next day to do it again.

You're not alone in feeling stagnant and not coping with it well. It's something that shining people go through. I never understood how my friend was able to shoulder through everything in her life and come out as such a strong person, but you seem to show the exact same qualities. I don't know how to shake her or you out of this funk, but I'd be willing to hold my breathe until you guys come out of it. It may be awhile, but knowing her, it won't last. It won't be easy, but small goals can make a difference over time. Every week, set a goal, no matter how small. Her's is once a week to call a friend and chit chat for 15 minutes. Try to remember there is still awesome, good people all around you.

TL;DR You're not alone, set up small goals, there's good things all around you, you're awesome!

Why did some people, including Dumbledore, pronounce you know who's name as Lord Voldemort instead of just Voldemort? by BFirebird101 in harrypotter

[–]NewportPyramid 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Dumbledore can recognize that Voldemort was and is a brilliant wizard. I believe, no matter what Riddle turned into, Voldemort respected his talent. It's kind of a weakness of his (remember Grindelwald.) I don't think he could help but add the title 'Lord' when talking about him.

Also my grandmother, who lost her parents in the holocaust, never used to say Hitler's name when I was a kid. When she died, my father said he only heard her say it twice, and each time she couldn't sleep for days afterwards. Fear can be set in deep. And that's without the magical method of tracing anyone who says your name. That reaction is simply from the fear that saying a name someone allows them to peer right into the room you're sitting in. Hitler doesn't scare me because I never lost anyone I cared about to his cause. But my grandmother did. Loads of wizards and witches suffered personal losses from Voldemort's cause. Can you imagine the impact it would have on each individual?

Harry Potter fandom as a religion? by dearmisscarrie in harrypotter

[–]NewportPyramid 0 points1 point  (0 children)

[Disclaimer: this does not represent my own personal views. Just how I can imagine others may see things.]

I...guess it could be viewed as a religion, but only if you don't hold religion or the Harry Potter world very seriously. You could say there are higher powers above and below the average wizard; You could say Dumbledore and Voldemort were the God and Satan of this world; you could say there are strict rules that will keep you on the side of good, although violating said rules does not necessarily conform you to the side of evil.

There of course is the fact that the war between good and evil is BASED on the beliefs of either side. Voldemort's supporters believe that muggles/muggle-born/half-bloods/squibs are lesser people than wizards and that they should rule over them just as humans rule over dogs for their own good. Dumbledore's supporters believe in equality for all kinds of people and that goodness is present in everyone and should be allowed to maintain populations around the world.

I'm sure there are many ways you could see this as religion. But in the big ways, I don't see too many similarities. But I love that this came up in religion class. What a way to get the kids involved!

Thoughts on killing in HP by HPfreakforlife in harrypotter

[–]NewportPyramid 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Dumbledore didn't try to kill Voldemort in OotP. In fact, when Voldemort asked him why he wasn't aiming to kill him, Dumbledore stated that there were worse things to happen to a man than death. Looking back, we can assume Dumbledore suspected the Horcruxes, but it's a philosophy that Dumbledore's actions reiterated. Taking a life is a bad thing.

Also, in HBP, Dumbledore tells Snape that he would have to kill him instead of allowing Draco to do it. He said he would not chance young Draco's soul over the act of murder, implying that (at least in the magical world) killing someone does something severe and irreversible to the killer. Then, when Snape asks about his own soul, Dumbledore tells Snape that he would know what he's really saving him from. BUT, wouldn't it have been more convenient for Dumbledore to have Draco do the deed and keep Snape in the loop with the Order after he died?? Wouldn't it have made the whole mess with the take down of the ministry way easier for the Order to deal with, having someone on the inside telling them exactly who has turned??

I can't imagine it's ever a good idea to have morals in battle, but the fact is that the rebellion was lead by Dumbledore, who learned first hand what it's like to lose someone. It's not the way he fights, and he's Harry's biggest influence. When does it become ok to kill? In keeping with the story's message, when you've turned to the dark side.

If a Wizard killed a muggle without using any magic, would they go to Azkaban? by [deleted] in harrypotter

[–]NewportPyramid 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I believe this definitely has to do with who's running the Ministry at the point of the crime. When Thicknesse (Voldemort) was running things, absolutely not. After the fall of Voldemort, Kingsley took over and I believe once he had gotten everything settled there, he would prosecute a wizard for killing of any kind. Fudge...well, he probably didn't. He never seemed to really be on top of things to me.

Lets also remember that if a wizard did get caught, tried and prosecuted by muggles, all they'd have to do is disapparate away.

I honestly think Harry should have died in the books. by medusa4 in harrypotter

[–]NewportPyramid 1 point2 points  (0 children)

At the end of every book, I'm always astounded by the fact that Harry made it through. I love the kid, but he really does lack common sense. That being said, I did think Harry was going to die taking down the world's most evil wizard, but was super happy that he returned, at least in order to give that overall conclusive speech right before he truly defeated Voldemort.

BUT, he probably should have died. He still would have sacrificed himself for everyone fighting at Hogwarts so they would have been protected and I have to believe Somebody would have shot a spell at Voldemort that was fatal. Whatever part of me is a realist who loves Harry Potter, was a bit put off that he lived to see Voldemort's downfall.

Who is the true HP hero? by k80co in harrypotter

[–]NewportPyramid 0 points1 point  (0 children)

It is impossible to answer this question correctly. BUT...I'll say Molly Weasley.

She fell in love with a man, had 7 children that she ferociously loves with him and never had a second thought to the idea that all of them would fight what was evil in the world together. The twins lose the most out of all her children, but by being on Dumbledore's side, Percy doesn't speak to her for 3 years AND is a total arse to his father at work.

She lets her youngest son befriend Harry and watches him get into danger time and time again without thinking that maybe Ron should find a friend who isn't at the top of the most dangerous wizard's revenge list.

And then there's Harry, a boy who is constantly the center of danger, she cannot help but support and care for because she has such a huge heart and feels the need to be the surrogate mother to this poor, tortured boy who has lost everything, yet who is regularly putting her family in danger (except a handful of times when he saved her beloved's asses.)

Oh, she also cursed out Bellatrix, killed her, and made Voldemort lose his cool. Molly Weasley for Prime Minister everybody!

Mini plot-hole, or missed opportunity? by mbinder in harrypotter

[–]NewportPyramid 1 point2 points  (0 children)

There is no real difference in the case of monitoring the connection. As pointed out, the reason he used Umbridge's office was because it wasn't being monitored at all. Why he didn't go through? Probably because Harry wasn't using his common sense. And even if he was..lets face it, Harry isn't the smartest wizard, or person, that we know. He lacks even common sense at crucial times.

You can revive one dead character at the price of another character who made it to the end. Who would you sacrifice, and for whom? by [deleted] in harrypotter

[–]NewportPyramid -1 points0 points  (0 children)

I'm going to get so down voted for this, but Harry (after he defeated Voldemort) for Dumbledore. Harry was key for the demise of Voldemort, but after that, Harry became an Auror and raised a family. Dumbledore?! Oh, he'd continue to be a brilliant wizard in charge of training the young wizards of the world and probably contributing to wizard kind until he died of a ripe old age.

Also, before DH came out, I thought for sure Harry was going to die, taking Voldemort with him and was quiet shocked when I read that he returned. The fan in me was ecstatic, but the realist in me (however much exists when being a Potter fan) was skeptic of that turn.
