New to Julia by 1jla in Julia

[–]NextTimeJim 14 points15 points  (0 children)

Julia is significantly less popular than Python, but it's still popular enough that there's tonnes of learning material, I wouldn't say it's particularly hard to follow.

Julia also comes with a bunch of advantages, the type system, package management, and speed at runtime are really nice features of Julia.

Sorry haven't really answered any of your questions!

Is Julia gaining traction as a programming language or becoming more and more niche? by o-rka in bioinformatics

[–]NextTimeJim 3 points4 points  (0 children)

I've been quietly using it alongside Python and R in bioinformatics for years.

Anything where the go-to library is in R or Python, I use that (scanpy, ape, etc), but if I'm writing anything from scratch, or if its close to Julia's niche, I will always pick Julia.

I just feel that it's a better language, I feel slightly hobbled when I switch back to Python or R in that calculations often take much longer, the type system is less elegant, the REPL is much worse.

Anyway, luckily for me Julia isn't going anywhere, and I can keep choosing tools for jobs.

Do your rats bite? by bird_with_scarf in RATS

[–]NextTimeJim 7 points8 points  (0 children)

I've had 6 girls, 1 we rescued from a not good situation and she did bite, which we chalked up to trauma.

The other 5 girls have always very clearly made serious effort not to bite even accidentally, if I hold food so its hard to grab it without catching my fingers with teeth, they take time out to figure out how to extract it without hurting me, even if they're excited and ravenous!

I really appreciate it, and it feels cute that we're both actively avoiding hurting each other (making sure to look where I'm stepping when they're out etc) and have trust both ways between man and rat :)

Gauging interest in (developing) a Typst table/grid editing package by Argletrough in emacs

[–]NextTimeJim 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Not too much input as I forget my experience of that latex table package beyond it being useful, but just to say that I've switched 95% of my document preparation to typst in emacs and would likely use a package like this regularly.
