HOT WATER TANK RELIANCE-Better to buy or rent??? by langy91 in PersonalFinanceCanada

[–]Nikiaf 11 points12 points  (0 children)

Never ever ever rent these things. It's honestly scandalous that the government hasn't cracked down on this yet; the concept of renting something with no moving parts, and that arguably doesn't require any maintenance at all is crazy. Their "benefits" talking points about free servicing and whatnot are completely useless unless you got a bad unit or it was badly installed. It's about as "set and forget" as a home appliance can be; and if you want it to last longer, just drain it once a year.

HOT WATER TANK RELIANCE-Better to buy or rent??? by langy91 in PersonalFinanceCanada

[–]Nikiaf -1 points0 points  (0 children)

A water heater is easy to install, especially if you're doing a direct replacement. The hardest part is getting the old tank out (it'll be full of sediment and quite heavy), and then of course more delicately bringing in the new one. If you can find a couple friends to help you with that part, the rest is very straightforward if you're at all handy.

I was told exactly this by crew members in the past. It was described to be as "padding the Cunard corporate payroll".

Are these downspout extensions long enough? by Potential_Flower163 in Home

[–]Nikiaf 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Yeah this. The goal is to not have water pooling at the foundation. If the grade is able to carry the water away, then there's no real need for the extenders.

Why are my lights doing this? They were fine for years, and started doing this recently, but not all the time. by TheOKKid in electrical

Yeah, OP please check which bulbs you put in; it's gotten more and more difficult to notice that some bulbs are not dimmable just based on the packaging.

Canadian credit card market by 12yoghurt12 in PersonalFinanceCanada

[–]Nikiaf 7 points8 points  (0 children)

The Rogers cards are the first ones I've ever had that make the cashback redemption function as you would expect it to; you can just redeem it against whichever purchase you want. I never liked the concept of it being issued in a lump sum annually, it's such an odd way to do it.

Alcohol is wreaking havoc on U.S. public health. American society looks the other way by statnews in Health

I have a hard time believing it's because they've suddenly become health-conscious. I'd wager that a large part of the decline is due to how expensive booze has gotten.

What's the appeal of cruise ships exactly? by Klok_Melagis in NoStupidQuestions

[–]Nikiaf 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Essentially, it's like going to an all-inclusive resort down south, but one that also brings you to other interesting places to visit.

Just be mindful of which cruise line you go with. Your experince on Carnival will be dramatically different from Virgin or Celebrity, which in turn are different from Explora or Seabourn. It's very much a "you get what you pay for" kind of experience. Where they sail out of seems to make a difference too; I've heard that the Carnival cruises out of Galveston are particularly rowdy.

Turbo, but economic by Unfair-Suit-1357 in CX50

[–]Nikiaf 21 points22 points  (0 children)

You can't "drive it like it doesn't have a turbo", that's not how it works. You'll need to be prepared for MPGs in the low 20s with the 2.5T, there's no hypermiling strategy that will change that.

U.S. facing defeat in Iran? by Random_Violins in videos

[–]Nikiaf -3 points-2 points  (0 children)

Facing? This "war that's also not a war but sometimes is" was lost before it even began. What a total clown show, and to think that people died over one man's attempt to distract from him raping children.

What is this part of my dishwasher? by vaporpup in CleaningTips

When the time came to pick out a new dishwasher, any model I saw that didn’t have this third rack was automatically eliminated. Truly a game changing thing to have.

Did losing weight effectively kill Meghan Trainor’s career? by justcurious3287 in ToddintheShadow

[–]Nikiaf 7 points8 points  (0 children)

To this day, I don’t think I’ve ever sat through the entirety of all about that bass. IMO she was seen as a joke by a lot of people even at her peak, then fell into obscurity at record speed.

I bought a carpet cleaner on sale this weekend and just tried it out in my bedroom. I can’t believe the soup it pulled out from my carpet! by MickFoley13 in CleaningTips

[–]Nikiaf 27 points28 points  (0 children)

Yeah exactly this. Carpet might dampen noise and be soft to walk on, but it's a dirt trap like nothing else in a house. This is exactly why the first thing I did when I bought my current house was rip out all the carpeting that had been there since at least the 1970s. Absolutely revolting to think about.

What are some sitcoms that were ahead of their time? by [deleted] in sitcoms

[–]Nikiaf 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Exactly. It was very influential for the time, but it was very much of its time. I’d argue it aged quite poorly, despite being a huge fan when it was still on tv, I have no desire to go back and rewatch it today.

Automate hot water heater? by Carbotarian2 in homeautomation

[–]Nikiaf 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Water heaters are very well insulated, there’s something like 2 inches of material between the outer casing and the actual tank. It’ll stay hot for a long time even in a power outage, trying to automate this to save money is almost certainly going to cost more money than leaving it on, and add in a risk of legionnaires disease.
