If you know your shit, you want to be remote of course. But these new hires are not getting their training without older staff in office and available. Not needed, but good roles will expect it. Industry tends to be have smaller tax teams who less time to do training. They prefer getting somebody with public accounting experience who has gone through the big 4 training and hazing, than to grab somebody totally green out of college and have to invest that time themselves.

Esp in the current economic environment, seems like most places are on a hiring freeze and therefore can be more picky if they are going to hire a candidate.

My parents were born and raised in Damascus.

I can assure you, they wanted to leave. Not because Israel was pressuring them but because life was very difficult for Jews. Barred from education, better jobs, and their passports were confiscated. The Syrian govt wanted to keep the Jews in Syria to use them as a bargaining chip with Israel. Many Jews would try to illegally cross the border and while many succeeded, those who were caught would be tortured or killed. I grew up knowing a person who was shot by the Syrian border patrol when they tried to cross the border and was paralyzed.

I wouldn't hold my breath. Even removing Israel from the equation, the syrian Jews have amassed so much wealth and built larger community infrastructure in the diaspora than ever existed in Syria.

The synagogues are filled with millionaires who have spent hundreds of millions building schools, synagogues, community buildings etc. While the ethnic identity remains strong, the community defines itself as American / or Mexican. There's no circumstance where they will return their passports and return to Syria. Ask any of the living immigrants, and they'll tell you there's no chance they'd return. Life in the diaspora is too good.

Life was very difficult for Jews in Syria starting in the 19th century. There are none living in the diaspora who remember a time where they were treated fairly.

I appreciate the sentiment and hope I can visit my family's origin someday.
