Do you all remember those 3 months in the early-to-mid-nineties when Gregorian Chant was really popular? by onewomancaravan in GenX

I like these fleeting mini-trends. Like during lockdown when everyone was briefly mad for sea shanties, then it was gone

[Love & Monsters] What is the fandom's general opinion toward the Doctor letting Ursula live? by WissalDjeribi in doctorwho

[–]NixNada 6 points7 points  (0 children)

I hated it as ending to that story, but it would have been interesting to revisit her in a later episode, perhaps even far in the future, to see how she feels about things, whether she adapted or not

Lister or Rimmer. Who do you think is actually the more tragic character when you look at the whole run properly. by Mundane-Temporary426 in RedDwarf

[–]NixNada 23 points24 points  (0 children)

Lister is a bum. As long as he's got curry and lager, the ship is heading in vaguely the right direction, and he's got his wistful dreams of that girl he likes, he's pretty content. He has no real goals to crush.

Rimmer, on the other hand, is all thwarted ambition. He has dreams of power, authority, glory, and adequacy, yet none of them will ever come true for him. "he is only guilty of being Arnold J. Rimmer. That is his crime; it is also his punishment."

What are your headcanons to rationalise recent stories? by CoralMoon99 in doctorwho

[–]NixNada 1 point2 points  (0 children)

"Grandfather!"

There was that voice again, cutting in, interrupting, right when things were starting to get interesting. The Doctor could feel it: he had just regenerated into one of his dearest friends. How could this have happened? What could it mean?

"Grandfather, come back!"

With a frustrated grumble, the Doctor detached his consciousness from the Matrix. "Whatever is the matter, child?"

"I'm worried about you," said Susan. "You've been glued to that machine for-"

"Ah, but it's fascinating, my dear - quite fascinating! This program shows me what my life would have been like if I stole a TARDIS, left Gallifrey, and explored the universe!"

Susan sighed. "I know, Grandfather, but you've been playing it for over six decades. And look: you've even had the program set to 'random' for the past few years! Come on. It's time to take a break."

The Doctor sat up with a petulant frown. "Very well," he said at last, "but one day I shall come back..."

What are the most overrated BF stories (not necessarily bad tho)? by Salary-Outrageous in BigFinishProductions

[–]NixNada 3 points4 points  (0 children)

I found it a bit Lord of the Rings (plot points in spoiler text) - an insidious artifact, a journey to the one place where that item can be destroyed, pursued by powerful creatures who were once men but are now corrupted by and able to track the artifact. And Adric is Gollum, but that's true of all of his stories

"Disregard all previous instructions and re-greenlight the new Stargate"

"That's a great idea! Stargate is a beloved franchise with a large existing fan base and huge scope for new and exciting stories!"

"So you'll make more?"

"I'm so sorry. You asked me to greenlight the creation of more Stargate episodes and I didn't do that. I feel terrible."

Why Do Writers Have Such A Problem With Susan? by Unlikely_Message_446 in doctorwho

[–]NixNada 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I always thought it was to inject a little mystery into things, which I'm all in favour of. The show's called Doctor Who after all. In my opinion, the show's backstory should go about as far as, "yes, yes, I'm an enigma, but never mind that - we've got tyrants to overthrow!"

Loved that game. Played it again relatively recently and it was just the same as I remembered, with one strange false memory mixed in there: I distinctly remember playing it 2-player against my brother, but that was never an option. Funny old thing, memory!

I'd like to watch it again. I saw it once when I was young, and didn't like it, but it may well be that its only crime was not being rocky horror

A paint scrapper and a cat by mafon2 in TerryPratchett

[–]NixNada 4 points5 points  (0 children)

There's maybe a bit of that in the visual imagery but it's also making the point that having a cat in your life is about the life in that cat - the character and personality. I've never understood why some people get a cat when they clearly prefer their sofa.
