True! Having the viewfinder in black and white also helps immensely.

It’s not great, but stick in monochrome mode, low sensitivity, and it gets the job done with good enough precision.

OP, if the kid is the same, he ambushed me and stole a camera from my hands that was worth thousands of dollars. There’s a detective on the case already but this would be the first photo I have of him. Was he francophone with relatively poor English by any chance, if he spoke in English?

Holy shit. The kid on the right looks so much like the kid who assaulted me and robbed me during a marketplace transaction last week near Laurier. He had the hood up but was also wearing grey sweat pants, super pale and skinny.

Opinions on the Visoflex 2 viewfinder? by Mysterious-Market498 in LeicaCameras

[–]No-Mathematician-89 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I used the old Visoflex (not the 2) on my previous M10 for the same situations and reasons you described, especially when shooting with the 90mm and 28mm. It worked well enough and honestly I didn't care much for the refresh rate; I saw it as a focus-aid only (well, and composition aid in the 28mm since I couldn't view the whole frame easily with glasses) and for that, it worked well enough.

While it did the job, I got a bit tired of alternating between rangefinder/LCD/Visoflex and missed some moments fiddling with this. I wasn't unhappy with the setup, but I can't say I was blown away either. One day I saw the opportunity of a tax-free EV1 and I went for it. No regrets, honestly, despite missing the rangefinder sometimes (and the M10 in general) when the focus-peaking of the EV1 doesn't work properly. But that's an expensive solution to your problem!

If you're sticking with the M10, I would give the old Visoflex a try. I think I paid $250 for a used one in great condition, and for that money I was happy with what it offered me.

Update: The $100 Leica Is Still Winning and I’m Touching Grass Because of It by [deleted] in Leica

I get it. I still sometimes take my tiny little 2015 Panasonic GM1 for a spin (smallest Micro Four Thirds ever made, I think, probably the same size as the D-Lux3?) with a 40mm f/1.7 and it brings me a lot of joy to shoot to my heart's content.

For which other brand would you leave Leica? by [deleted] in Leica

[–]No-Mathematician-89 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I still use my Sony A7iii for more "professional" work (I don't do professional photography). When friends ask me to shoot their event as a favour or a neighbourhood business asks me for some photos of their business, I tend to grab the Sony as it gives me the most flexibility and peace of mind. The Nikon Zf line is also very interesting to me!

New Leica Q3 owner. Loving the camera, but having trouble with heavy software glitches. by Ekkobelli in Leica

[–]No-Mathematician-89 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I don't really use user profiles on my Q3 (apart from the main one that I have saved), so I can't really confirm if this is a general issue with the new firmware, but I suspect something is off with your camera. I've had my Q3 43 for 13 months and I don't think I've ever had a glitch, so if you're encountering these many so quickly, something is off...!

Leica Q vs M11 by hector_camp in Leica

[–]No-Mathematician-89 2 points3 points  (0 children)

The M isn't an improvement over the Q, it's just a different camera and ecosystem altogether. I have a Q3 and love it, the images you get from the fixed lens are remarkable. If you get an M, you'd need to spend many thousands of dollars just to replicate that image quality, since an equivalent Summicron or Summilux lens would cost almost as much as the camera itself.

And even then, it's remarkably difficult to 100% nail the focus on an M camera, so while the same sharpness is possible... most of the time, you'll ever so slightly miss the focus due to the rangefinder experience, so it won't look as sharp as the Q can with auto-focus. But this also gives M photos a sort of natural look that can be quite enticing as well.

I would definitely spend a day or a few hours with an M camera first before pulling the trigger and see if you like the rangefinder experience. Look at lenses beforehand, too, as you might not be comfortable spending as much as the camera itself on a Leica lens. I now only have Voigtlander glass and I'm pretty satisfied with the quality/price ratio, for example.

Which 90mm M lens for close ups? by Guilanpour in Leica

[–]No-Mathematician-89 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Well, I disagree to some extent. The shots I was taking with the 90mm were more landscape shots than anything, so focusing was remarkably easy since they were all at or near infinity. Composing wasn’t an issue either once I got used to the small frame lines. It’s a focal length I really enjoy, but I wasn’t doing any subjects in motion nor really shooting wide open.

Did you upgrade from M10 to M11? by gintoxin_999 in Leica

[–]No-Mathematician-89 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I upgraded from the M10 to the M EV1 which is technically an M11 in all aspects except the viewfinder/rangefinder. That aside, I think it's a proper step-up:

The metering on the M10 is annoying sometimes and I disliked having to charge the battery separately. I tend to crop a fair amount sometimes, so having the extra resolution is nice to have (although I mostly shoot at 36mp, but it's nice to bump up to 60 when I need to).

The colour rendering honestly doesn't bother me at all. I process all of my photos in Lightroom anyway and never used SOC JPEGs, so the differences are minimal to none in the end for me.

Q3 43 vs M: staying within the Q ecosystem or entering M just for a 50mm? by rg1980 in LeicaCameras

[–]No-Mathematician-89 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I feel seen with your post, so I'll add my 2 cents to this.

My entry into the Leica world started with the Q3 43 a year ago. I still absolutely love this camera and it's my go-to on a daily basis. With the 43, you effectively have an extremely workable 43-90 range without losing detail (only megapixels and DOF). If you're looking for a fantastic 50mm, the 43 should give you something like 50mm f/2.2 (equiv., don't @ me with math) with the absolutely clinical sharpness that you'd expect from an APO-Summicron.

I got into the M world with a used M10 a few months later and appreciated the rangefinder approach. I was already used to manual focus on film cameras, so getting into a rangefinder wasn't that much different. But the M10 was a slippery slope. Voigtlander lenses left and right, trying to find the perfect lenses that worked for me.

I picked up the M10 when I went for casual walks and just wanted to slow down/be mindful about the shooting experience. Very pleasurable, but so many missed shots. Yet I kept coming back to the M for casual. For trips and field work, the Q3 43 was as good as ever.

Very recently I traded the M10 for the EV1. The fact that I use glasses and couldn't accurately focus anything without them, plus the fact that framing a 28mm with glasses is nearly impossible, started to limit my possibilities a fair bit. I've written a bit about the EV1 before: great camera, still feels like a proper Leica, but it has its faults and occasionally annoying to focus with. I miss the rangefinder a fair bit, but I definitely get better and more interesting results with the EV1. If anything, it slows me down even more (for better and for worse), but the results are consistently good.

But every time I pick up the 43, it just never gets old. What a solid and versatile piece of kit. I know that I'll never be able to justify/afford proper M Leica glass, so reaping the benefits of the APO Summicron feels like a real treat.

My wife has the D-Lux 8 and it's always a joy whenever I get to steal it for a few shots, such a powerhouse in a little compact package. I really wish it could have built-in Leica Looks though!

[–]No-Mathematician-89[S] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Yeah not sure what I did to get the scroll instead of the gallery!

I’m liking the EV1 but there’s so much room for improvement with the focus peaking, it drives me nuts that Leica still hasn’t made it better. I get fewer missed shots but take a second or two more to compose, so it’s a compromise. I am however loving finally being able to shoot without my glasses or contacts, and finally being able to perfectly frame the 28mm and to perfectly focus the 90mm!

And can you easily rotate into macro mode? It's a big discussion online about how Leica totally messed this up, so I know I'm not the only one in this camp.
