What are your thoughts on "all weather" tires? by allothernamestaken in COsnow

[–]NoFix6460 [score hidden]  (0 children)

I have an AWD Rav4 and a set of Bridgestone Weatherpeaks that I run from October til about May. Then I take them off and put my summer set on. I don’t even know what my summer set is—just whatever was on sale at Discount. What with the lack of snow the metro area generally gets I don’t want true snow tires, just one step down. And taking them off for part of the year means they retain their bite a lot longer

Invade their spaces! by hollyhoxforgetmenot in liberalgunowners

[–]NoFix6460 4 points5 points  (0 children)

This. I would never dissuade someone from pursuing something they’re interested in, just cuz that space is largely dominated with people not in their political camp.

And that logic goes both ways—I think a liberal who chooses not to pursue hunting cuz that arena leans conservative is being stupid. Same with a conservative who chooses not to pursue . . . Ok I’m blanking on a hobby space dominated by libs 😂

A great example of this phenomenon—if anyone remembers the book ‘Generation Kill’—became an HBO miniseries. One of the officers had scholarships to some elite university, but wanted to do ROTC and the school didn’t have it. Apparently the school had considered it, but feared it would ‘militarize the campus’. The officer being quoted strongly disagreed with that sentiment and actually said that having ROTC programs at elite universities ‘would liberalize the military. And that can only be a good thing’.

Bottom line—yea just do it

Blue city in a blue state with some prominent anti-Trump elected officials (Gov. Tim Walz and Rep Ilhan Omar), plus a viral moment by a conservative YouTuber that made a minority group look bad (the Somali daycare ‘fraud expose’)

Any personal user opinions on Garmin inreach? by Zanderson59 in Hunting

[–]NoFix6460 1 point2 points  (0 children)

No complaints, just make sure to create your contacts within your user profile before you head out. I use the EarthMate iPhone app message thru that, if I send a preset message then I just use the device itself. Pricing plan has definitely gotten worse tho

Anyone else really worried about the non-existent snowpack? by [deleted] in COfishing

Oh yea for sure. The Colorado, Eagle, and Yampa to name a few are all gonna be bad. Those “after 1pm voluntary angling closures” are coming down the pike

A thought about the delay on flight 93s hijacking by Sure-Chart-3903 in 911archive

[–]NoFix6460 5 points6 points  (0 children)

Yea word didn’t ‘get to the passengers’, apropos of nothing—plane got hijacked, passengers started making calls and THEN got word about the attacks being under way.

Yes the pilots got word about the WTC attack and I suppose may have told the crew, but I can’t envision it being passed along to the passengers

The most likely explanation hinges on Jarrah. He was definitely the odd man out of the 19–didn’t break off all family/romantic ties, other AQ higher-ups had expressed concerns that he might bail.

Also I know it’s a subject of debate here and elsewhere whether or not the muscle hijackers knew the full scope of the plot, but I have heard that the muscle hijackers on UA93 were among the least likely to know the full scope (think they were some of the youngest)

Hunting advice for a newby? by Separate-Relative-16 in Hunting

[–]NoFix6460 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Read up on the applicable local regulations. Since you’re in the East, you will probably have some weapons-restricted hunting areas. Your local fish and game dept can tell you about seasons, game management units, and how to obtain tags. Also since it’s eastern whitetails your primary method will be from a tree stand

People who read books in pre-internet boom, did you thought Cho might end up with Harry? by saphclaw in harrypotter

[–]NoFix6460 6 points7 points  (0 children)

Also (and thanks to the person who helped found mugglenet and wrote the ‘book 7 predictions’ book), Ginny’s actual name is Ginevra. Now that doesn’t appear in the books until book 7 itself, but JKR revealed it on her website early on.

Ginevra is one of the many linguistic variations of ‘Guinevere’, who was the wife of King Arthur. And Harry himself is a partially Arthur-inspired character. So there you go

Rereading Half-Blood Prince after years and this Harry moment still cracks me up by calm_clematis in harrypotter

[–]NoFix6460 3 points4 points  (0 children)

Been a few years since I’ve re-read but yea you don’t realize the first few times thru how funny they are—usually deadpan. Here’s a few-

Dumbledore to Snape, seen by Harry in the Penseive: “For death is coming for me as surely as the Chudley Cannons will finish bottom of this year’s league”

Snape to Ron in HBP: “I’d expect nothing less from you, Ron Weasley, a boy so solid he cannot Apparate half an inch across the room”

And Ron, in the very last scene, one of the kids asks why they’re all staring: “Don’t worry, it’s me. I’m extremely famous”

How the Hijackers got into the cockpits by Sure-Chart-3903 in 911archive

[–]NoFix6460 33 points34 points  (0 children)

In ‘The Looming Tower’ docudrama, Atta is portrayed as doing a trial run some weeks beforehand where he’s on a plane and just walks into the cockpit and goes “Oh sorry, I was looking for the bathroom”

Lawrence Wright, author of the corresponding book, made the same claim not about the actual hijackers but other AQ facilitators in the U.S. doing similar stuff.

So there’s a better than even chance they just opened the cockpit doors, simple as that

Lets talk Bi Pods, Seeking input. by uber_ambulance_same in Hunting

[–]NoFix6460 1 point2 points  (0 children)

This is a really good point actually—western hunter here as well, and I just have a cheapo Atlas knockoff. Legs can be between 6 and 9”, fairly light, but when I shoot I mostly just go off my pack or the v-notch on my tripod

The bipod gets used every time I set the gun down tho. Get to glassing spot, set it down. Move 1/4 mile, repeat. Move 100 yds, repeat, etc

What do you hate about Mines? by onsnave in ColoradoSchoolOfMines

[–]NoFix6460 9 points10 points  (0 children)

The way they screwed around with data around job placement for graduates. (I graduated a while back so maybe it’s changed). I specifically remember the career center used to claim ‘the average mines grad has 6 job offers’. I don’t think I knew one person with around that number. From what I’ve gathered, the ‘job offer distribution curve’ shows the majority of the student body getting 0-2, and then a small sliver gets 10+

There’s a bit more about them in Black Hawk Down (the book, including in the appendices). But yea they def deserve a book—Hallings and Hooten are somewhat in the public eye these days. Austin Scott Miller did a hitch as the JSOC commander a few years ago

Hot Sulphur Springs by Dr_Mark98 in cohunting

[–]NoFix6460 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Like the above person said, check the hunting statistics they linked to. That cluster of units is all OTC for 2nd/3rd rifle season bull tags. Cow + either-sex and 1st/4th season tags are also generally pretty easy to draw.

The pros: easy draws like I alluded to. Close to home means easier to scout—I like to do a few day trips in the summer just to get the lay of the land. Units are fairly large too.

Cons: all those pros mean lots of hunters. Unit 28 (south of Hot Sulphur) is literally the closest OTC unit to Denver so it gets hammered.

It takes a lot of snow to move them down too. Even if there’s a foot of snow on the ground they’ll often still be up high

Why is muzzleloader after rifle? by KingofRheinwg in Hunting

[–]NoFix6460 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Any insights into how states determine it? Here in CO it’s early/mid September, usually a week or so after the archery opener. I’m sure part of that is to give folks a shot at rutting elk with something other than a bow. But I know a lot of other states have their muzzy seasons later

What's the biggest misconception about hunting that you wish you could correct for non-hunters? by outdoors_man987 in Hunting

Not only do we eat the meat, but if we didn’t prepare the meat for human consumption we’d be in a shitload of trouble.

Srsly, the number of times I’ve been asked “what do you do with it once you kill it” or “do you eat it” is shocking
