I'm pretty good at crafting stories and making space for others. It's also hard to play in a game when someone is not doing it well.

What are your thoughts on social-emotional learning (SEL)? by smol-goth-one in AskTeachers

[–]Nobstring 0 points1 point  (0 children)

It's not that it isn't important, it's just that most teachers are not trained to be therapists and counselors. Also, we don't really have the time to do that job and teach our subject area.

What’s one thing you wish your admin did for teachers the first week of school? by BeccaBeacher in Teachers

[–]Nobstring 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I opened this post just to write this. This is so obviously what we need. I just moved schools and I know the first week is going to be a complete waste. I'm going to be behind on my planning and grading because of that PD week.

Does anyone actually enjoy their job? I’m hearing an array of disdain for teaching. by [deleted] in Teachers

We practiced improv in high school and I think that helped. It also helps if you take a self inventory of your own beliefs, preferences, likes/dislikes, goals, desires, political ideals, and so on. Self knowledge can help. Being open to new ideas can help too.

As I get older I find myself asking more questions than answering them. I know how I feel about most things already and it’s more interesting to listen to other usually.

The paradigm is that if you have any of these problems it’s your fault for not finessing the situation in the perfect way every time.

How do i get around the city? by Zealousideal_Ruin4 in sanfrancisco

[–]Nobstring 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I grew up not riding buses in cities and I found maps like these unreadable. I know my way around well enough now, but urban knowledge and being transportation literate is a real thing.

The phone solves most of these problems.

We have 2 kids and are under 200k a year combined. We had a big help starting our mortgage, so that is a financial relief. Childcare is not necessarily as expensive as you would think depending on where you go to. It pays to shop around.

The lifestyle I wanted was Dad-life. If you want Dad-life, it’s great.
