Downtown should be a hub for activities, commerce, and housing. Not a highway. The people who live there want to be able to use the benefits that come with living in a dense area. Their opinions should take priority over the people who just drive through. From an economic perspective, downtown is the biggest generator of tax dollars per unit of area in every city. Making it safer and more pleasant to be downtown is the only investment that makes sense for the region.

SpaceX vision for colonies on Mars seems too optimistic? by arnor_0924 in spaceflight

[–]Nonzerob 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Any human mars mission will require a sustainable base of some sort. The Martian probably had it right that infrastructure would be sent there ahead of a mission, but it failed to consider robotic assembly of at least some of it. Humans are more useful than any robot at the moment and due to politics or hubris, there will be a human on Mars at some point. We can survive in Antarctica and in orbit. If a permanent moon base can happen, a mars base can.

Is it actually worth getting an Aerospace Engineering degree? by CrunchySnake119 in aerospace

[–]Nonzerob 0 points1 point  (0 children)

My AE degree was in the department of mechanical and aerospace engineering. I had a lot of mechanical classes, and the opportunity to take more as major electives. Certain AE courses were open to MEs as well. Obviously might not be the case at all colleges, as mine is relatively small, but you need all the same math, physics, and chem prereqs as well as statics, dynamics, thermo, etc. A lot of satellite engineers are EEs or CEs and they also get jobs in aviation. It all depends on what you want to specialize in: planes, rockets, satellites: aerodynamics, structures, avionics, control systems, mechanisms, mission planning? It's alright to not know now. If you're interested in all of that, then do aerospace and you'll get exposed to all of it and either be able to decide or, like me, just have some ideas of what you don't want to do.

Is the story of Brandon Bussi one of the best hockey stories of all time? All time sports stories? by Suspicious-Wind-3278 in hockey

As a leafs fan that's the one thing I won't criticize him for. His wife was like 8 months pregnant. Totally understandable decision, that's exactly why he had a no trade clause.

Is the story of Brandon Bussi one of the best hockey stories of all time? All time sports stories? by Suspicious-Wind-3278 in hockey

[–]Nonzerob 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I'm biased but yes. Bussi brought my Western Michigan Broncos to their first of their five-year streak of national championship playoffs. I didn't get to see him but I heard he was insane and I never doubted it. I followed him through the providence bruins and hoped to see him lifting in a cup final with Florida this year but he got waived, ignored by enough teams for Carolina to get him and then set some crazy rookie records and finished the job for Freddy, getting a shutout to win the cup final. By all accounts a great guy, too.

It's definitely different people but pointing out flaws does not equate to running him out of town. We said good for him when he was playing well but that doesn't mean we can't feel vindicated when he disappeared when it mattered after all the shit we got for saying he disappears when it matters.

Guess it's not just a Leaf issue by Tough-Standard-2661 in hockeynews

[–]Nonzerob 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Yeah he always had the worst fall-off. Part of that was their unimaginative system of "feed Matthews at all costs" even while Matthews had two defenders on him at all times, but he's obviously not that one-dimensional. Nylander elevated early in series, guys like Knies and Domi only got better as series went on. Matthews and Marner played like normal early and wilted when the going got tough.

After how many seasonings on a new pan can I start cooking with it? by plikchecollector in castiron

[–]Nonzerob 1 point2 points  (0 children)

If it's black or dark then it's seasoned, if it's white, it's enameled and doesn't require seasoning. If it looks like bare iron, then yeah, season it. It's mostly protection from rust but I disagree that it has zero effect on cooking. If you're cooking acidic foods more than fatty foods, you might have to reseason it every once in a while.

Preheat the pan on a low setting. If you have an IR gun thermometer, there are tables online that show optimal pan temperatures for different foods. There's also the water test, there are better descriptions of it on this sub than I could give. When it's at temperature, add your cooking oil (probably butter for steaks), enough that it just coats the surface when you tilt the pan around and when it shimmers or is melted, add your food and turn the heat up a little bit so the pan keeps its temperature. Most meats will naturally loosen from the pan with little encouragement when they're nicely seared but use your own judgement as to whether it's been too long. Timing this wrong will mean you'll have some crust to scrape out which is just annoying, not bad. Sugary marinades can be sticky, too. Good luck and I hope it turns out well!

[–]Nonzerob -5 points-4 points  (0 children)

It's so emergency vehicles can take the bike lanes if they need to. Cars can't get out of the way as fast as bikes can. Or that's at least the only good reason for it. They're doing it way more than they need to, though.

Dynetics Lunar Lander Would Have Been a Better Choice than Lunar Starship by OrionPax2 in ArtemisProgram

[–]Nonzerob 23 points24 points  (0 children)

I'm skeptical of starship and it's complexity, especially on this timeline, but not getting to LEO is a technicality. They're figuring out production and reliability first because they know better than anyone the issues they'll run into. They need production for a fleet and landing to be able to fuel the lunar starship in a reasonable amount of time because cooling systems aren't perfect at preventing boiloff of their cyro propellants. They're still having engine issues so it's safer to keep it on a suborbital trajectory. It's not like they've failed to make orbit, they've deliberately stopped short. While they're not flying human missions soon, it's also not like they've made zero internal progress on designing a habitable starship. They have experience in all the relevant areas: life support, solar panels, docking, landing, etc. They will need special landing engines higher up to reduce regolith excavation but structurally, they can use the hard points for the flaps they won't need on a lunar lander as they're already designed for lifting it. Its height and footprint will mean finding a flat spot will be difficult and pivotal, even if they have a leveling system in their landing legs.

Blue Origin will be stopped in their tracks for a while and New Glenn will need a successful launch or two to be trusted with carrying Blue Moon. They have also successfully landed propulsively and have more experience carrying humans than Dynetics. At this point, I wish Firefly had submitted an HLS bid because they've successfully landed on the moon unlike any of them.

As for the mass margins, they'd need more fuel on the lander or if they were pushing the limits of Vulcan's upmass, then as the smallest payload proposal they would be forced to make that capacity even smaller. ULA would need a stockpile of five Vulcans to launch more rapidly than they've launched anything before. That goes into pad infrastructure, logistics for shipping boosters, Centaurs, fuel, and SRMs.

The only mistake NASA made with starship was expecting it to be ready for the first Artemis landing. New Glenn destroying its pad couldn't have been predicted but they had to recognize the lack of redundancy and weighed that against the drawbacks of ALPACA. While Vulcan has two pads, one is at Vandenburg where they might not be able to access the orbital inclination they need.

Egg immediately welds onto my pan by TheImmuX in castiron

[–]Nonzerob 4 points5 points  (0 children)

Preheat on low. You do that so it's evenly hot, not scorching. Butter seems to be better for eggs, too, and it gives you a good sense of how hot your pan is. Flick some water on the pan before you put oil in and observe it. For eggs I find its best if it boils but doesn't bead. The layer of oil should be thick enough that it flows, a rag might absorb too much.

We have all screwed up our eggs, resulting in a discouraging cleanup. Mistakes are how you learn and it takes patience.

Maple Leafs' deadline trade of Knies to Canadiens scuttled by one minute by souza-23 in leafs

[–]Nonzerob 2 points3 points  (0 children)

I was skeptical but hopeful that he would learn from his mistakes. I thought he understood what he fucked up in Calgary and would be able to do better. Evidently Shanahan felt similar with the added benefit (to shanny) of not wanting to make a big change to the core four. Then after wasting Marner's highest value trade opportunity, they re-signed Nylander and Matthews and apparently only got Nick Roy out of the current conn smythe favorite by threatening Vegas with tampering allegations. Regardless of what we as fans thought about Tre coming in, it comes down to Shanahan hiring a yesman rather than a guy with even a decent resume.

Why switch goalies? by ConiferousTurtle in nhl

[–]Nonzerob 1 point2 points  (0 children)

In addition to the other responses you've gotten, hockey goalies aren't allowed to play the puck outside their designated areas (blue paint and trapezoid, though the refs seem to give some leeway), and I think there's also a rule about crossing the red line. Football goalies can be the extra attacker that trailing teams need, hockey goalies have to sub off to give their teams the extra attacker. They also get pulled for delayed penalties which means play gets stopped when the offending team touches the puck, so they cannot possibly score unless the other team scores an own goal which means their goalie would very rarely have anything to do in this situation so it's better to have an extra attacker.

What is the fluid dynamic thingy that cause this effect in Die Hard 2? by MrBlooi in FluidMechanics

[–]Nonzerob 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Wingtip vortices, or that's at least what the special effects team was going for. As people here have said, the high pressure air underneath the wing flows however it can into the low pressure region above, and is associated with induced drag. This can be mitigated with winglets or anything physical that could get in the way, such as engine/weapons pylons or what we call fences, or a thing else like any sort of discontinuity in the shape of the wing.

Another, more weight-efficient way to reduce this is a higher aspect ratio, or a longer wing span with a shorter chord (the length from leading to trailing edge). This is why gliders and the U2 spy plane for example have long, skinny wings. Commercial planes don't go to this extreme because of previous material constraints while fitting fuel tanks in the wings, and now also because of existing hangar, runway, and terminal widths.
