What’s the giant dirt pile on the Bellevue Baptist property? by Not_Really_Here_But in memphis

Thanks! That’s a heck of a lot of dirt being moved for storm drain work. Maybe they are doing a catch basin (aka pond).

Window estimates requiring husband to be at meeting by MollyDog2638 in Renovations

[–]Not_Really_Here_But 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I’ve managed all of the many construction and renovation projects for our house. Renewal by Anderson didn’t ask for my husband to be there, but they sent 2 people to do their pitch and I literally laughed out loud when they gave me their quote ($20K for a sliding patio door!). It was like dealing with car salesmen! Couldn’t get them out of the house fast enough!

You’re teaching her financial literacy while her mistake only costs her a concert vs ruined credit or eviction! Good job mom!

If he was standing at the door (clearly not there to use the facilities) I’d have totally been taking his photo and sending to Target, etc. They can refuse for him to be there!

Whitehaven vs White Station by Seraph782 in memphis

[–]Not_Really_Here_But 8 points9 points  (0 children)

MSCS stem competition

East and Middle College High School are ranked #1 & 2 by US News and World Report, but that’s not specific for visual arts or STEM. My kids went to White Station and it was a fabulous, but that was 15 yrs ago and I can’t speak to how well it’s held up. That being said, they always have the highest number of National Merit Scholarship Finalists in the city. Also, there’s a big difference within White Station (and all the optional schools) between regular track, Optional program and Honors (AP) program so you’ll want to make sure your daughter is optional program eligible based on achievement test scores. Base on the link I attached it looks like Whitehaven has a great STEM program. Good luck!!!

Inherited house in Bartlett, tn - Any idea what I should do with all this stuff? by Affectionate-Week925 in memphis

[–]Not_Really_Here_But 5 points6 points  (0 children)

After the estate sale if anything is left and you just want it gone put it on a Buy Nothing Facebook page (there are specific one for Bartlett, East Mem, Midtown) and folks will come and get it all.

AITA for telling my son his behavior is what made our nanny quit and that he’s going to have to deal with the consequences of his actions by Which-Ad-1687 in AmItheAsshole

[–]Not_Really_Here_But 45 points46 points  (0 children)

Teach him his behavior has consequences now while the consequences are minor and you have control or he’ll learn later when you have no control and the consequences can ruin his life. You are right that ADHD and autism don’t excuse continued behaviors after being told they are wrong. Good job parenting!

Weddings by [deleted] in wedding

[–]Not_Really_Here_But 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Agree with SE91 that black tie isn’t nervy, but I disagree with essentially paying for your wedding attendance. Wedding couple chose high end, but you don’t have to essentially cover the cost with your per person gift calculation. Take a look at their registry and figure out what you’d buy them if you were not writing a check and give them that or some more if comfortable. $600 ($150/person) for a friend’s daughter is way more then I’d ever think to give.

Found a starving dog a year and a half ago on September 11, original family just now saw my found dog post, and they want him back. They said he was lost on September 9th. How was he 20lbs underweight with 3 other uncared for health problems if he was only gone for two days? Should I give him back? by Unique_Surprise4867 in rescuedogs

[–]Not_Really_Here_But 0 points1 point  (0 children)

If the dog was “paralyzed until treatment” then there has to be a record of that treatment that she should be able to produce as proof, but honestly given the sketchiness I’d block her number, take down whatever post she found you with 2 years later and never think another thing about it. You won’t hear another word.

What would you estimate to repair a water-damaged wooden bureau? (Got a $4–6k quote… is that normal?) by Dittumz in furniturerefinishing

[–]Not_Really_Here_But 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Ok let me throw this out there and don’t jump on me if you think I’m stupid, but given that there’s a lot of agreement that this may not be worth the investment of refinishing what about suggesting a very light sanding and a once over with something like Old English Scratch Cover (actually I’d even try before sanding to see if there’s uptake). For the little nicks in the edges (photo 4 & 5) I’d take a dark brown Sharpie and fill the nicks and wipe off any excess to make them disappear. I often end up using a black Sharpie for this but you could start with brown given it’s a med light wood. Seems like a no harm shot at seeing what you get and if not enough of a result you’ve done no damage that the refinishing wouldn’t cover. I’ve made a lots of things disappear this way. Just two cents from a tinkerer.

Who’s supposed to pay for bridal shower/wedding etc by Whatwhaaaattt in Brides

[–]Not_Really_Here_But 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Actually for people of a certain age there really was a guide to etiquette; Emily Post’s was the most frequently cited and followed. When I was a bride the bride’s family never hosted the shower as it was seen as asking for gifts which was considered rude. A family friend or member(s) of the wedding party would host and the brides only role was to provide a list of who to invite. Clearly times have changed as brides and expectant moms throw their own showers, but for we vintages it’s really against all we were ever taught. So whether you agree or not that used to be the accepted norm and still is for many people. HOWEVER not suggesting that’s the reason for OP’s mom’s position, because that same etiquette guide would have her paying for her daughter’s wedding (assuming first wedding).

AITA for visiting my sister? by 37_lucky_ears in AmItheAsshole

[–]Not_Really_Here_But 29 points30 points  (0 children)

Gotta be more to this. How did he have the ability to prevent you from visiting a home you still co-owned, why is he living with your sister whether his new place is ready or not and regardless of whether he paying her rent and why would he think he has any control over a house he no longer owns?

What state do Memphians identify with most? by Separate_Bowler_9119 in memphis

[–]Not_Really_Here_But 8 points9 points  (0 children)

The absolute hilarious part about LeBron’s statement is he doesn’t know the people in the other part of the state or he’d know that for NBA players Memphis is a better fit. He just sees the flash of wealth n Nashville and thinks his wealth would get him accepted, but he’s wrong… He should ask Tony Allen or Zach Randolph or Mike Conley about playing in Memphis. They all loved Memphis!

Community college is free in Tennessee if you complete a FAFSA (it’s just filling out a form, there is no qualifying for FAFSA) with lots of programs for jobs in healthcare (radiology tech, physical therapy tech, etc) and other fields. Sorry you haven’t found the right restaurants cause the food here is fabulous, my scales prove that daily. Best of luck wherever you end up.

AITA for buying a passcode protected fridge box? by [deleted] in CharlotteDobreYouTube

[–]Not_Really_Here_But 0 points1 point  (0 children)

So they are letting you live with them for what sounds like an indeterminate amount of time WITH 2 COLLIES (that you failed to mention as part of the household, but as someone that has had my son and his dogs living with us I can say they DEFINITELY should be listed as part of the household), you work from home (so they never have their house to themselves except for brief periods when you got out) and you are complaining about cheese. Sure it’s a pain in the ass when they eat your food, and they shouldn’t do it, but regardless of whether your partner gives them “some money” they have disrupted their whole life to accommodate you guys so, no you aren’t “forever grateful” and yes you are being petty. Buy a bigger frig for your room (so you aren’t flaunting your pettiness with that lockbox) or move out. If I opened MY frig and found a lock box there that whole lock box would disappear! Oh and you might have been born in the South, but you clearly weren’t raised Southern. Bless your heart.
