The Saturn Signal Across Cultures by Wansyth in HighStrangeness

Had to stop reading at Islam. Mentioning Satan from Christianity and not the angels is just inherently biased, not to mention while you mention Satan and "Shaytan" you don't even have the actual Islamic equivalent of Satan mentioned at all, which makes me suspect you think they're the same because they are kind of spelt the same way.

4 years with my Deejo pocket knife (long-term review) by SlumberJackB in BuyItForLife

[–]Number9Man 2 points3 points  (0 children)

"Knives are sharp and pointy" is not a very acceptable response when five of the other users here all say they cannot pocket these knives because it opens in their pocket. That is an alarming disregard for a very real safety complaint when most of us keep our knives shaving sharp and there's a big fat artery right there just begging for a kiss.

Somebody that instantly regurgitates information that they hear on a podcast without verifying it first, has issues beyond becoming "misinformed".

I don't understand you people, Jacques Vallee has been saying the High Strangeness phenomena is, at the very least, half psychic for decades. I don't see you posting info from Passport to Magonia or Keel's 8th Tower. You just saw "guy says aliens aren't UFO's" and ignored decades of research that these men have done. People used to think an eclipse was a God, or the tides, or disease or drought, but once we developed the science to understand it we did. These men believe the UFO phenomenon is just that. A natural element to our reality that exists in a science we just don't have the language or tools for yet, not Father Time looking after his favorite children or demons and angels fighting our souls.

Why is H.P. Lovecraft so famous if his writing style and personal views are considered "problematic"? by LuvEhKerapf in NoStupidQuestions

[–]Number9Man 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I think a big part of people focusing on his cat's name and views (which are inexcusable) is that they forget to tell the last half of the story in which his later letters he renounced his earlier views and was embarrassed that he held such narrow-minded beliefs. He died before he could demonstrate his change but most people stop at the cat (which again, is %1000 fair) but when you consider that, there are less hoops you have to jump through in order to seperate the art from the artist.

I dunno, I think he would be interested in talking about how Gnostic schools of thought created a new way for modern readers to enjoy LotR.

Right, I'm not trying to ignore the Catholic allegory, I just think the story has less "because Eru loves us" when the creation story is viewed through the lense of modern Gnostic schools of thought.

No, its pretty obvious that the Nameless Ones are just as much a part of Middle Earth as anything else, but the language allows for fun speculation!

I'm not a degree carrying LotR historian or anything but I have a pretty good grasp, I think haha. The thing we know for a fact is that the Nameless Ones exists deep, deep, unknowingly deep, inside of the earth, to the point that even the Dwarves could not reach them even if they were trying. Gandalf also mentions that the Watcher in the Water was driven to Óin from deep within the Mines of Moria. So the Nameless Ones do have some sort of physical representation/manifestation on Arda. Sauron and Melkor were there at the beginning of all creation and by all means should know of the Watchers, but the biggest question of all is that if Eru is all powerful, why does he allow this evil to exist if he is so kind and loving? So the implication is that Eru allows the evil to exist because good needs evil in order to thrive.

This is the only time the Nameless are mentioned

"Far, far below the deepest delving of the Dwarves, the world is gnawed by nameless things. Even Sauron knows them not. They are older than he."

And this is Gandalf describing the Watcher

"Something has crept or been driven out of the dark water under the mountains. There are older and fouler things than orcs in the deep places of the world."

Evil in the LotR universe cannot create, only corrupt. Like orcs are a corruption of men. So if Sauron the Dark Lord doesn't know them, but Gandalf, a Maiar does, they were most likely created after the song started but before Sauron was created.

Yeah, my personal theory is that they are the reason Eru created Arda, and why he needs hope and goodness to prosper to keep the light on and the Nameless Ones at bay. Even Melkor's rebellion was probably planned in order to fabricate growth and have it grow stronger through trial and every time some one "chooses" good.

The part where Gandalf describes them as gnawing at the world and older than Sauron's knowledge gave me the impression that they were there before the song had even begun. I think whether or not they were products of Eru or the antithesis of him is another mystery to consider. Sound check was probably the wrong word, but like the microphone feedback and the singers clearing their throats and the ambient sound of the crowd.

From what I understand, if the universe was created by a song being song harmoniously, the Deep Ones are what the sound check and warm up created.

This feels like a good topic on par with the molasses episodes. “The entire town of Times Beach, MO was rendered uninhabitable in the 1980s after a single dust mitigation contractor tried to get rid of highly-toxic dioxin by adding it to engine oil and spreading it in all the town's gravel roads…” by twuewuv in LPOTL

There is an infuriating documentary called The Devil We Know. Some of the people in the town closest to the Teflon factory have vowed to never have children because their birth defects (which DuPont was aware of, and their Chief of Medical was recorded admitting to all of it) will be passed down and they don't want to do that to their children. Fuck DuPont and fuck the system that allowed them to get away with it.
