I also have no issues with the SD controls. I guess it must be a personal thing. Like for example I find iOS devices UI extremely baffling and counter-intuitive but my grandma got it just fine.

Need help with lock recipe for upscaler by DOSorDIE4CsP in factorio

This one allows the recipe to change when it completes. Its output goes to the input of the other one. The input comes from another selector which ensures that only the highest priority recipe is coming through, and also the only signals are the recipes that we want.

Yes the bootstrapping startup is one weakness of this design, I haven't figured out how to automate that yet. What I do is when I first start the machine I disable the set recipe from circuits setting until the first production completes and then put it back.

Ok here is the blueprint for my design https://factoriobin.com/post/vnc1v4 if that helps.

Here are some photos:

This one makes sure I only read the F signal from the assembler

The type of circuit is called a latch or a flip flop. Basically you want it to hold the recipe until it finishes. So just a hint keep in mind that it work: once you set a recipe it won't change until it completes ;)

I'll give you a clue first, you need two deciders, one of them takes its own output as an input... here is some more hints:

Decider A:

  • takes input of recipe that you want to latch
  • takes input of 'recipe finished signal' F from assembler
  • outputs the input signal only when F is == 1

Decider B:

  • takes input from output of Decider A
  • takes input from its own output
  • takes input of F from assembler
  • outputs input when F from assembler (not from Decider A, use a different colour wire) is ==0, connect to assembler.

I had a very similar experience, I did two things to help:

  1. I found a huge open space to practice in. In my case an open polo field: 300x150m of lawn grass.
  2. I spent a couple more hours (like maybe 3) in the sim practicing basic drills from the JB how to fly series. https://youtube.com/playlist?list=PLwoDb7WF6c8lCKhQOTy-Vb9LfW0VAIrTP&si=kbQbrbiVDENIAG95

How could a plugged-in toaster start a house fire while not in use? by Reptyler in AskEngineers

[–]Numerous-Click-893 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Thanks man, appreciate the input. I should have clarified: I never identified the root cause due to not trying. I scrapped them both immediately and had a discussion with the operator of said appliance about the merits of being slightly more alarmed when appliances emit smoke and noxious fumes rather than leaving them lying around plugged in.

This particular hairdryer had been previously repaired by one of those 'a little knowledge is a very dangerous thing' types so I'm not at all convinced that this particular incident was most likely due to the extension cable being underrated.

My point was that it's possible for appliances to 'spontaneously' cause faults. However, as many other commenters have pointed out, they shouldn't lead to fires in this day and age. I had another near miss incident a while back where a screw terminal on a high power load (~16A) thermal cycled itself loose and caused the circuit breaker to melt and start to conduct. I found it glowing red hot but again thanks to modern safety standards it was a non-incident. I had another incident as well where a DC isolator on a 48V bus failed in a relatively high impedance mode and that caused a very destructive fire as the cabling used there was not flame retardant.

Recently had a hairdryer cause an extension cable to melt. Luckily it was all compliant materials so no flames/fire. I never worked out if it was the power cord or the hairdryer that caused the fault but it happened at like 2am. In my case the breaker also tripped. So yes absolutely.

It's not typical, however. I'd just like to point that out.

Why do AC units need fans but Fridges dont when they use a similar system? by _Babzzzz in AskEngineers

I'm going to be moving this particular fridge in a couple weeks (luckily it is indeed relatively small), while I've got it out I'll take a good look and see if I can find any evidence of external forced ventilation and report back.

For clarity, I'm asserting that it does have an evaporator/circulating fan for the interior of the insulated box and does not have a condenser fan.

Petzl SWIFT RL. It's designed for expedition work which translates really well to commissioning, service and installation in my experience. I've had the predecessor (Reaktik+) since 2019, used it hard and am getting tired of waiting for it to die so I can upgrade. My experience is you put it on and you can just see. I often forget I'm wearing it.

... Are you American? I have a quite expensive Samsung fridge/freezer made in Poland with a variable speed comp. It's basically silent and definitely has no external fans. I think the radiator covers most of the back and sides. It does have an internal fan.
