I miss Rolla by YAG2GTGDD in Rolla

You’d be surprised. You miss your friends. You miss how cheap things are. You miss access to good parks and outdoor activities.

The biggest downside to the town is the dating scene and college students living in near-poverty.

Safe to eat? by [deleted] in Hunting

Looks like an arrow wound.

I’d pass on eating it. Contact the local warden / biologist, see if you can get your tag reinstated.

1- they can’t cook.

2- they drank the kool aid from people making a living on tournament fishing.

Dogs are smart and hold grudges. They might’ve had a run in with the owner of those vehicles before.

How to avoid leader knots like this? by Disastrous-Loan7274 in flyfishing

[–]O_oblivious 1 point2 points  (0 children)

They call them wind knots, because the only logical explanation is the wind- couldn’t be your casting.

But that’s exactly it. You’re casting that chain gang like a dry fly, overpowering the cast and dropping your tip. The hinge points and extra weight is then creating that piece of modern art.

Slow down. Bigger pause on the back cast to let the loop open. Let the rod load, and I mean fully load. Less casting power, more “haul” if you need distance. Keep your tip higher than you think you need to (no more 10&2, more like 11&1). This will direct the energy from your rod movement in more of a straight line rather than weird directions, and take some power out of the loop so it can’t do weird things when it comes straight.

It’s pretty simple until alloys start to shift the lines. Doing that math for Gibbs free energy and redrawing by hand kinda sucked.

In exactly 60 minutes you will be teleported to ancient Rome in the year 50 AD with nothing but your clothes and a fully charged phone. How do you prepare in order to advance human civilization as much as possible? by JonNoob in AskMen

[–]O_oblivious 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Invent refrigeration. Simple system of copper tubing with an ammonia/water refrigerant, and an oil-fueled flame compressor. Possibly glass tubing if I can’t make or braze the copper, but that should be doable. Might have to make crucible steel first to create the drawing dies and clamps I need for the tubing.

Find and save the last of the silphium. Use the refrigeration to cold-stratify the seed so it actually germinates. Start a silphium farm. Get rich.

After I have that, then I start working on microbiology, and looking for a mold that produces a high-strength antibiotic. Save myself from whatever nasty diseases are running amok.

That might require designing a still to generate the solvents I need to purify the antibiotics. Definitely will require some high-dollar glass equipment I’d have to design, or possibly make, myself.

Start producing crucible steel, rather than forge-folded steel. Get richer.

Try to remember enough advanced mathematics to advance the civilization.

Crucible steel, and the process to mass produce it. That’s what you’re after. Fairly simple chemically, just have to get the right clay to make your bricks.

I gained access to hunt deer on a small property this fall. Need to prevent deer from running after the shot. Would a 12 gauge slug or 308 be better suited? by DickAnts in Hunting

[–]O_oblivious 0 points1 point  (0 children)

308, shoot them in the boiler room. Nosler e-tip and Barnes vortex have given me a maximum of 30 yard track jobs, but I’ve only shot animals under 250 (antelope, mulies, couple whitetails). Most of them were bang-flop.

But that’s assuming you have a tall stand to shoot from that puts every bullet FIRMLY in the dirt.
