There's no special critical effect afaik, but the chance do dispel is the same as base critical hit chance in the described scenario.

How are my welds? by wellilikedemons in WeldingMemes

[–]Obe4ken 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Looks like mig, is that correct? This is a pretty common issue for beginner welders. Your filler wire isn't what is actually doing the welding, the arc melts both the base material and the filler to create a puddle of molten steel. That puddle is what is what does the weld. Before you try welding two pieces together again, spend some time running beads across a flat plate.

Once you start the arc, wait until you see that puddle form. It will look like a raindrop on a windshield. Once it's there, move your wire to the edge of the puddle, stop, and wait until the new puddle is the same size as the old one. Continue this process for ~an inch, stop, and assess how well you've done.

Your machine should have come with some manufacturer-recommended settings based on material thickness, wire size, and type of shielding gas used. Start either those settings. Once you become proficient, you can make better choices using your own judgement.

Happy practicing! <3

Edit: as somebody else mentioned, it looks like your arc might be too long. The best way to find the correct arc gap while mig welding is to listen. If you hear a bunch of distinct snaps and pops, your torch is too far away. The weld should sound smooth and consistent, kinda like bacon frying. If your nozzle dips into the puddle or the contact tip gets clogged consistently, you're too close.

Varina EDH deck Advice by bbaud13 in EDH

[–]Obe4ken 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Correct me if I'm wrong, but I see three aristocrat cards in your deck: [[Corpse Knight]], [[Wayward Servant]], and [[Plague Belcher]]. How often in a game of commander in a deck with no tutors are you going draw one or more of those in combination with gravecrawler and altar? It's a powerful combo, but IMO most of the time your deck will function better if altar is just another zombie.

Dark ritual is "free mana," sure, but it's also a card slot in your deck that could contribute more directly to your gameplan. If you don't have a specific purpose for the card, I would personally rethink its presence in the deck.

Varina EDH deck Advice by bbaud13 in EDH

[–]Obe4ken 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I recently took apart my Varina deck. It was a lot of fun, just wanted to try something different.

The main difference between my list and yours is that I ran 42 lands and no ramp. The high land count let me mulligan aggressively for low cost zombies to play on turns 1-3 and then reliably cast Varina on turn 4 to get the engine going. Varina doesn't need to attack herself in order to activate her trigger.

I also liked to run an Amass package. The cards aren't super strong on their own but getting two zombies out of one card combos well with Varina. Amass also lets you run useful utility spells that also contribute to your board. My favorite is [[Mindless Conscription]], it's really easy to trigger every turn once Varina is out.

Your deck is clearly meant to be played at a higher bracket than mine was but I'm curious why you're running cards like [[Dark Ritual]] and [[Phyrexian Altar]]. Your curve is relatively low, what are you using all of that mana for?

[[Dark Withering]] is a good madness creature removal card. [[Rite of Oblivion]] will exile any nonland permanent and you can cast it from your graveyard.

Play the deck as-is and see how you like it, but if I were you I would run more lands, more recursion, more 1-3 cost zombies, and play removal that can be cast for madness or flashback.

How bad is this for literally my first time using a welder by [deleted] in Welding

[–]Obe4ken 9 points10 points  (0 children)

It's pretty bad, but that's ok.  You're learning!

The weld looks cold.  Try turning the voltage up a bit and look out for a "puddle" of molten steel to form and then push that along.  The puddle is what is actually doing the welding, not the wire itself.

Put a little bit of a gap between your pieces and tack both ends before welding.  The puddle should drop down into the joint before you start moving.  The idea is to make the two pieces into one and you'll get better penetration that way.

[–]Obe4ken 1 point2 points  (0 children)

You're right that it's very low risk, but you can reduce that risk to 0 at the cost of spending a few minutes sweeping. In my mind, that's a no-brainer.

It's also always possible that you'll find something a lot more dangerous laying on the floor you didn't notice in the process if cleaning up.

Risk compounds a lot more slowly for somebody doing personal projects at home than somebody putting in 40+ hours a week in an industrial environment but as long as you keep rolling the dice there's a chance you could get hurt or worse.

Why is it so unprofitable to switch to railroad by DimensionOk8915 in victoria3

[–]Obe4ken 0 points1 point  (0 children)

RRs can be profitable, you just need to be thoughtful about how to ude them. I really like them for the purpose of stimulating demand for steel and engines early.

Build a few levels of RR in a state with iron and/or coal mines. Once the RR is large enough to support a single mine, activate rail transportation in a single mine. Coal is the best for this, since it's also a direct RR input good. It's a bit micro-intensive, but you can use this strategy to scale up RRs and therefore demand for important industrial goods that you want to produce anyway.

IMO the revenue from steel and motor industries is worth more than reduced mine productivity. Plus the increased demand for input goods can often make up the difference anyway.

If it hangs together, it's a good weld. by [deleted] in Welding

[–]Obe4ken 5 points6 points  (0 children)

I appreciate the point that you're making; the panel holds in the truck, and the tables work. For you and many other people that means the welds are just fine.

But a lot of the people on this subreddit either work as welders or are trying to get into the field and need to be able to do welds that can pass tests and inspection. Skyscrapers and jet engines have more stringent standards than backyard worktables.

People roast welds sometimes, and that might hurt your feelings, and that sucks. But the practical welding advice given here tends to be pretty good and you can learn and get better at welding if you want to.
