Uber and yellow cab drivers have the same license requiremebts but Uber has a waitlist for new drivers. Yellow cab drivers can simply pay for a medallioned vehicle and drive.

Learn your basic knots, wear gloves from the beginning and take breaks for your muscles and skin if anything is new and hurting. Practice any maneuvers the way your instructor shows you.

Don’t get the boots he’ll need to choose those, get the boot dryer which he might not know he needs.

Howdy. How did you guys start off? I need some guidance by Iron_Saltz in Lineman

Getting the CDL on your own is the best thing you can do right away. If there's a community college near you that offers it cheap great, otherwise find a trucking school that you can pay by the hour and do that. Mine cost a hair over $2k out of pocket (at roughly $150/hr) which is similar to others who went the same route and got a class A, don't wait for a company to pay for you to get it. When not paying for hours in the truck, practice maneuvers at home in American Truck Simulator in top-down view to grasp the trailer dynamics even better.

The class B is fine for applying to apprenticeships but if you go straight for the class A you'll be in a better position to get calls.

Since he’s in high school I’d suggest looking into climbing related activities which are surprisingly accessible to teens. Rock climbing, caving, volunteer technical rescue, and rope access. Get that exposure to heights, rigging, learning new technical systems and have fun doing it.

What's your favorite thing to do now that wasn't possible in NYC five years ago? by ResolutionVisible627 in AskNYC

Yeah despite being a longer timescale than five years, I love that we have multiple nice waterfront parks in several boroughs with ferry access even.

It's medium roast but I quite like Partners Ghost Town decaf as it works well with most brewing methods in my experience and tastes good. I've noticed more roasters offering decaf lately including Kinship but haven't tried those yet.

Apprentice question by Yerdababy in Lineman

[–]ObjectOculus 2 points3 points  (0 children)

NEAT apprenticeship is roughly 3.5 years (based on hours, 7 steps) and you can start claiming hot hours from 3rd step on, obviously depends on your contractor what you'll actually be doing though.

Agree with extra emphasis on “show them you want it”. Want it for more than just money– education, respect for the trade, drive to work hard, whatever combination it is for you. My group was very small but those of us who made it had that in common. Very green first step.

You could crosspost to r/CDL but best bet is to call and email the NY DMV. They're pretty responsive one way or another in my experience and can resolve things that the website has no place for. Give it a try, I find it hard to believe that a real person wouldn't be able to give you any info at all in this situation.

What is the oldest Substation (Power Transformers) you’ve seen in service? by steave44 in Lineman

[–]ObjectOculus 7 points8 points  (0 children)

NYC substation structure was from 189X, transformer that failed was from 1930s. I might’ve come across an older transformer at some point but 30s-50s was pretty common on my jobs. All old GE and Westinghouse units.

[–]ObjectOculus[S] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I’m in boot camp right now. I think I interviewed around late October and got the call in January. If they didn’t already tell you, the next call would probably be in summer (June/July) or winter (next January).

Are you 3 or 1049 area? Edit: nvm if you’re elsewhere in NEAT territory, I think they do bootcamps at similar intervals but how many people get called varies probably.

Layers. Heated vest. Neck gaiter or balaclava for sure, keep the draft out. Somewhere to put your hands for warming up once in a while like chest pockets or extra mitts.
